Movie Review: Paul Blart: Mall Cop (2009)
Short review of Paul Blart: Mall Cop which I caught at a friend’s house last night. Paul Blart (Kevin James) is basically a loser: he is fat, passes out every 20 minutes if he does not get his frequent sugar intake, failed the state trooper physical test 8 times and looks utterly ridiculous riding on his Segway as a mall security guard. Comes in Amy (Jayma Mays), she sells hair extensions at a kiosk called Unbeweaveable and Paul immediately gets smitten with her. Soon afterward, a bunch of acrobatic bad guys lead by Wedding Crashers‘ gay son Keir O’Donnell terrorize the mall and take control of a few hostages, among which Paul’s crush. Paul decides to stay in the mall to be the hero of the day. Yes, you never saw that one coming! Nevertheless, you know better than to expect anything from this type of low-grade comedy and Kevin James did a solid job of making his character likable enough. The supporting cast was serviceable with poor Jayma Mays only having to make cute faces and Keir O’Donnell still a bit too recognizable from his Wedding Crasher’s stint. The movie is totally unpretentious and does have its moment so I have to give it a better grade than that piece of trash Transformers 2.
Fairly entertaining albeit completely forgettable light comedy as long as you have (very) low expectations. It definitely helps to watch it with other people.
