Most Anticipated Movies of 2010

Almost four weeks into the new year and I post this list but no harm done as it doesn’t look like I missed anything. More than likely, about half of those following movies will be disappointing and I won’t end up seeing so don’t come back and flame me on that. At first glance, it looks like a a very solid 2010 movie crop after a slow beginning of the year.  I won’t be able to go through all the little indies I’m excited about because there is way too many of them though. As always, any thoughts, leave them at the bottom! By release date order:

The Wolfman (February 12)

Upon his return to his ancestral homeland, an American man (Del Toro) is bitten, and subsequently cursed to be a werewolf every full moon. This movie has disaster written all over it. I hope I'm wrong as the movie does have a fine cast highlighted by Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins and the rising Emily Blunt. However, the movie has been delayed several times, numerous reshoots and production crew turnover problems occurred and it seems like no one has any idea how the movie will turn out yet with only a few weeks before the release date.

Chance of Sucking: 70%
Shutter Island (February 19)

Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio team up once again in Shutter Island. Two US Marshals (DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo) investigate the disappearance of a woman from an eerie facility for the criminally demented. The two men begin to lose their own mind once inside. What the hell is this? A mystery thriller?? Not a mobster movie??? I admire Scorsese for trying something new. Let's wait and see how it pans out.

Chance of Sucking: 40%
Alice in Wonderland (March 5)

A sequel to the fairy tale, Alice returns to Wonderland years later. The place she used to know is now... different. A great cast highlighted by Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway and Helena Bonham Carter should make this movie at least interesting and Tim Burton always creates some eerily fascinating world so this might be one to look forward to.

Chance of Sucking: 30%
Green Zone (March 12)

Matt Damon plays Chief Warrant Officer Roy Miller, who is searching for weapons of mass destruction during the US invasion of Iraq in 2003. He begins to uncover a cover-up of faulty intelligence and goes rogue. This is essentially Jason Bourne set in Iraq and this is no surprise since Damon and director Paul Greengrass worked together on the Bourne franchise. Well, at least we know what we are going to get.

Chance of Sucking: 30%
Clash of the Titans (March 26)

The mortal son (Sam Worthington) of the god Zeus (Liam Neeson) embarks on a perilous journey to stop Hades (Ralph Fiennes), the God of the underworld and his minions from spreading their evil to Earth as well as the heavens. Another remake but I can't complain, the original was far from a great movie. There is a lot of big names attached to this production so there is hopes that it's a solid action-packed movie with some substance but a lot could go wrong.

Chance of Sucking: 50%
Date Night (April 9)

In New York City, a case of mistaken identity turns a bored married couple's attempt at a glamorous and romantic evening into something more thrilling and dangerous. All that needs to be said is that Tina Fey and Steve Carrell team up in this comedy. The trailer was funny and there is also a solid supporting cast including Mark Wahlberg, James Franco, Kristen Wiig, and Mark Ruffalo among others.

Chance of Sucking: 20%
The Joneses (April 16)

A seemingly perfect family moves into a suburban neighborhood, but when it comes to the truth as to why they're living there, they don't exactly come clean with their neighbors. Ok not really a movie I would go and check out in theater but I'm looking forward to this nice little indie starring Amber Heard, David Duchovny and Demi Moore.

Chance of sucking: 30%

Kick Ass (April 16)

Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson) is an unnoticed high school student and comic book fan who one day decides to become a super-hero, even though he has no powers, training or meaningful reason to do so. I really just started warming up to this movie when the red-band trailer came out and this looks like a potentially hilarious and fresh dark comedy with a lot of promise.

Chance of Sucking: 20%
A Nightmare on Elm Street (April 30)

A re-imagining of the horror icon Freddy Krueger, a serial-killer who wields a glove with four blades embedded in the fingers and kills people in their dreams, resulting in their real death in reality. A likely needless remake of Wes Craven's classic but seeing Freddy back on screen could be an incentive enough for some to see this movie.

Chance of Sucking: 80%
Iron Man 2 (May 7)

With the world now aware of his dual life as the superhero Iron Man, billionaire inventor Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) faces pressure from the government, the press, and the public to share his technology with the military. Unwilling to let go of his invention, Stark, along with Pepper Potts must forge new alliances and confront powerful enemies. Downey is currently on top of his game so I expect nothing less from the movie than picking up where the first one left off.

Chance of Sucking: 20%
Robin Hood (May 14)

The story of an archer in the army of Richard Coeur de Lion who fights against the Norman invaders and becomes the legendary hero known as Robin Hood. When Ridley Scott makes a movie, you pay attention. When Russell Crowe is in a movie, you pay attention! There has been numerous adaptation of the famed character but let's face it, none of them are classics. Let's hope Scott can change that with this movie that has Cate Blanchett, Mark Strong and William Hurt as strong backups to Russell Crowe.

Chance of Sucking: 30%
Shrek Forever After (May 21)

The further adventures of the giant green ogre, Shrek, living in the land of Far, Far Away. Shrek now is yearning for his old days of running freely in the wild, living in his little hut and going out late into the night to go dance with some donkey. Yes... Shrek has hit his mid-life crisis. Hopefully, this is the last Shrek and the franchise finishes on a high that leaves people wanting for more (but not really). I have few hopes for this movie, the franchise has dollar signs all over it.

Chance of Sucking: 50%
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (May 28)

The next video game-to-movie adaptation with a white dude playing the Prince of Persia. That's Hollywood for you! An adventurous prince (Jake Gyllenhaal) teams up with a rival princess (Gemma Arterton) to stop an angry ruler from unleashing a sandstorm that could destroy the world. I am not really interested in this movie but it is quite a large production with a $200 million budget so there is always a chance that it's decent.

Chance of Sucking: 70%
The A-Team (June 11)

A group of Iraq War veterans looks to clear their name with the U.S. military, who suspect the four men of committing a crime for which they were framed. This action-comedy is based off the highly popular TV series and features a solid cast including Sharlto Copley, Bradley Cooper, Liam Neeson and Jessica Biel. The A-Team should be this year's pinnacle of fluffy but fun to watch.

Chance of Sucking: 30%

The Karate Kid (June 11)

Dre (Jaden Smith) moves to Beijing and gets bullied by a local kid so he decides to get Kung-Fu lessons from a Chinese martial art master (Jackie Chan). I have no idea why they are making a remake but whatever. Jackie Chan seems like a good fit as Mr. Miyagi and Will Smith's kid showed a little promise in The Pursuit of Happyness. It could be fun for young kids but it will likely disappoint people who have already seen the original.

Chance of Sucking: 70%
Toy Story 3 (June 16)

Woody, Buzz, and the rest of their toy-box friends are dumped in a day-care center after their owner, Andy, departs for college. This should be one of the most anticipated movie of the year simply because of the stamp "Pixar." Will this movie ever top the second Toy Story which is still widely seen as a masterpiece? Stay tuned.

Chance of Sucking: 20%
The Green Hornet (June 25)

By day, Britt Reid (Seth Rogen) is a wealthy media mogul and a ladies' man. By night, he teams up with his associate Ikano Kato (Jay Chou) to fight crime as masked vigilantes. At first, this may sound very Batman like and Seth Rogen's name may not come immediately to mind when thinking of a masked superhero. However, there is some talent attached to this movie, to begin with director Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) who should bring something original to the table as well as villain Christoph Waltz.

Chance of Sucking: 60%
Twilight Saga: Eclipse (June 30)

OMGZZ!!! MY BESTEST MOST FAVORITE MOVIE EVAAAR!!!! <3 <3 <3 I CAN'T WAIT FOR THIS ONE ROFLZZZZ. I LOVE IT SO MUCH AND I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE IF BELLA WILL SMILE AT LEAST ONCE IN THE ENTIRE SERIES!!!??! SO GIRLZ, WHO WILL SHE PICK? I HOPE SHE CHOOSES EDWARD, HE IS SO HOT WHEN HE SPARKLES!!! LOLZ BUT JACOB IS CUTE TOO SO I DON'T KNOW OMG I CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Chance of sucking: -453%
Knight and Day (July 2)

An action-comedy centered on a fugitive couple (Cruise and Diaz) on a glamorous and sometimes deadly adventure where nothing and no one – even themselves – are what they seem. Amid shifting alliances and unexpected betrayals, they race across the globe, with their survival ultimately hinging on the battle of truth vs. trust. I'm not so sure of teaming Tom Cruise with Cameron Diaz who has always been forgettable for me but I thought the trailer was quite hilarious. With James Mangold (3:10 to Yuma) at the helm and a solid cast, I think this movie could be better than what it might appear to be.

Chance of Sucking: 50%
The Last Airbender (July 2)

The story follows the adventures of Aang, a young successor to a long line of Avatars, who must put his childhood ways aside and stop the Fire Nation from enslaving the Water, Earth and Air nations. Based off the Nickelodeon animation, this is a movie by M. Night Schyamalan who has been more and more disappointing. The trailer looks decent with some some eye-catching photography.

Chance of Sucking: 60%
Predators (July 7)

A group of elite warriors are hunted by members of a merciless alien race known as Predators. The first Predator was a classic and this movie is a sequel following the first movie. Having Adrien Brody in the lead role is a big question mark but I will let movie come out before making any hasty judgment.

Chance of Sucking: 60%
Inception (July 16)

In a world where entering dreams is possible, a single idea from the human mind can be the most dangerous weapon or the most valuable asset. Very little is known about this Christopher Nolan sci-fi movie despite the teaser trailer being out for several weeks now. Expectations are sky-high and Nolan did not help by stating recently that this movie was "bigger" than The Dark Knight. The all-star cast includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Ken Watanabe, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Marion Cotillard.
Chance of Sucking: 20%

Salt (July 23)

A CIA operative must go on the run and clear her name after she is suspected of being a Russian spy. Buh-bye Tom Cruise! Welcome Angelina Jolie! Some may take the Cruise departure as a warning sign but I see this as an improvement. Jolie is a legitimate action hero and director Phillip Noyce is one who favors great story-telling to cheap gimmicks.

Chance of Sucking: 40%
Morning Glory (July 30)

Produced by J.J. Abrams, Morning Glory is the story of Becky Fuller (Rachel McAdams), a television producer who is set the challenge of reviving a sagging morning show program, despite the constant feuding of its high-profile anchors (Diane Keaton, Harrison Ford). This is Rachel McAdams' movie and she will finally get her chance to shine in a solid lead role but look at that supporting cast: Ford, Keaton, Jeff Goldblum and even a cameo by 50 Cent :) Having read an early version of the script, I can tell you that this is not a chick flick, Rachel McAdams is perfect for the lead role and that Harrison Ford is going to be hilarious. I'm pumped for this movie which should be charming, funny and good looking.

Chance of Sucking: 30%
The Expendables (August 13)

The Expendables are a team of mercenaries set to overthrow a South American dictator. Sylvester Stallone (who also directs), Jason Statham, Jet Li, Eric Roberts, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke, and Steve Austin are in the movie, with cameos from Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis. My keyboard just about exploded just typing that.

Chance of Sucking: 0.62%
Piranha 3-D (August)

A tremor under the surface of Lake Victoria unleashes scores of prehistoric piranhas, an event which rallies the local sheriff (Shue) who will risk everything to save her townsfolk. It was with sadness that I learned that Piranha 3-D's release was pushed back to late August at the earliest. This movie should be way over-the-top and hilarious even if it might not be the original intention.

Chance of Sucking: 50%
The Tree of Life (Fall-Winter)

The story centers around a family with three boys in the 1950s. The eldest son witnesses the loss of innocence of two characters. Very little is known about this movie. Terrence Malick has a quiet and deliberately slow style of narration that makes his movie not for everyone. The film stars Brad Pitt and Sean Penn among others. Definitely one I have my eyes on.

Chance of Sucking: 30%
Tron Legacy (December 17)

Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund), the son of Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges), looks into his father's disappearance and finds himself pulled into the same world of fierce programs and gladiatorial games where his father has been living for 25 years. Along with Kevin's loyal confidant, father and son embark on a life-and-death journey across a visually-stunning cyber universe that has become far more advanced and exceedingly dangerous. The premise make for a potentially mind-boggling movie with stunning visuals. The question remain whether it can live up to its promises.

Chance of Sucking: 40%
The Beaver (2010)

A depressed toy company CEO (Mel Gibson) walks around with a puppet of a beaver on his hand and treats it like a living creature. Soon enough, he is only speaking to people through it. This looks like it could be hilarious if done right. The highly acclaimed script contains a ton of hilarious dark humor and Mel Gibson can be funny when he wants to so let's hope it works real well. The movie stars and is directed by Jodie Foster.

Chance of sucking: 40%
Buried (2010)

Seriously, getting buried alive is probably one of the most nightmarish scenario possible. Imagine a movie that depicts that scenario, not for a short 5 minute sequence like in Kill Bill Volume 2 for example but for nearly the entire length of the movie! The film stars Ryan Reynold who is a meh for me but let's hope he can put up a substantial role for once. Early reviews from the Sundance film festival are excellent so I have high expectations for this.Chance of sucking: 30%

Centurion (2010)

Directed by Neil Marshall, Centurion tells the story of the elite ninth legion during the Roman invasion of Britain. The unit is wiped out by guerrilla attacks and only a group of soldiers trying to survive behind enemy lines remains. The cast includes Michael Fassbender, Dominic West, and Bond girl Olga Kurylenko. Prepare for some nice-looking battle scenes Roman era style!

Chance of sucking: 30%

Mr. Nobody (2010)

Nemo Nobody leads an ordinary existence at his wife's side and their 3 children until the day when reality skids and he wakes up as an old man in the year 2092. At 120, Mr. Nobody is both the oldest man in the world and the last mortal of a new mankind where nobody dies anymore. But that doesn't seem to bother him very much. The only questions that preoccupy him in the present is whether he lived the right life for himself, loved the woman whom he was supposed to love, and had the children whom he was meant to have... now his purpose is to find the right answer. The movie stars Jared Leto, Sarah Polley and Diane Kruger.

  1. Magnum says:

I agree with almost all predictions(not counting Shrek and that other animated shit I have no interest in), except for Prince of Persia. I think it will be awesome (or decent at least). Jake Gyllenhaal looks convincing as Prince (Persians are white, so I have no problem with casting here).

Also, Twilight prediction is a major win:)

  2. Sam says:

Great article. I like the ‘Chance Of Sucking’ meter. I have to say I’m a tad worried about Alice In Wonderland. It’ll probably still be great but surely I can’t be the only one getting a tad bored of Burton being Burton and Depp being Depp in Burton films. Can I…?

  3. Most of those probably will suck and I’ll still see just about all of them. Although if half of those movies don’t stink up the theater, it should be a pretty good year for me.

  4. mikedamike says:

Date night 20% – Have you even seen the last 10 movies or so Carell was in? More like 70% Guess if you like 30 Rock and expect more of the same

  5. Castor says:

    @ Magnum: :)

@ Sam: Thanks Sam, glad to see another fellow blogger join our community! Yes I agree about Tim Burton and Johnny Depp but it should help that a relative unknown is playing Alice and Depp and Bonham-Carter have supporting roles.

@ The Film Reel: Oh yea, just about every movie looks good on paper. I will be happy if half a dozen are great

@ Mike: The trailer was hilarious!! I mean you know what to expect, I realize not everyone loves that kind of comedy but most people who will go and see that movie know exactly what they are getting into

  6. Castor says:

If you have any trouble reading the table above (old computer from 1958 and 15 inch monitor lol):

Go to the RSS feed which should be fine: http://feeds.feedburner.com/AnomalousMaterial-Movies

  7. Red says:

Great idea with the suckage meter. I started putting together a huge list of movies for movies to watch out for in 2010, but I didn’t really want to include films like “Wolfman” and the “A-Team”, because I expect them to be complete disasters.

Later today I’ll throw my own percentages on these same movies in this comments section. Should be the same for the most part, but there are a few out there that I would change up.

  8. Heather says:

I’m DOWN for the Expendables, Alice In Wonderland, Clash Of The Titans (knowing full well it may blow goats), and Iron Man 2.

    What looks like a disaster?

Shrek Forever, The Green Hornet, Predators, and The Karate Kid…..especially with Jayden Smith. He was good in Happyness, but was an effing piece of crap in The Day The Earth Stood Still.

And LMAO @ Eclipse. I don’t hate the Twilight movies, but I certainly think some of the animosity for them is humorous.

  9. TWILIGHT FTW!!!! TEAM JACOB GOOOO! hihihihihihi XOXOXOXOXO

There are a few very interesting titles on this list that eluded me until now. “Buried” and “Centurion”, for example. Didn’t even know they were being made, shame on me. Both of them look very promising.

“The Karate Kid” – the first one was one my favorite childhood films. But Jayden? I’ve only seen him in “TDTESS”, and like Heather said, he was total crap.

“Tron” and “Predators” – I’m rooting for them, but I have big doubts. “Tron” will undoubtedly be fun blockbuster, but “Predators”… I mean, out of the cast only Danny Trejo and Laurence Fishburne make me happy. Topher Grace, Brody… against Predator(s)??? Sounds like a bad joke.

“The A-Team” – there’s no Mr. T. Somehow, in my mind, without Mr. T there’s no real A-Team.

“Prince of Persia” – I think it’ll totally rule, but I’m a little biased because I’m a great fan of the Sands of Time trilogy era video-games. As for Jake Gyllenhaal, he’s the mirror image of the Prince now, all buffed up and shit. Plus, the Prince is white so…

“Kick Ass”, “Robin Hood” and even “Alice” should all be interesting as well.

    • Castor says:

I’M ON TEAM EDWARD EHEHEHEHEH!!!! THE POWAH OF THE SPARKLE WILL TAKE JACOB DOWN

    • Heather says:

      Hey Shaft!

Well now after typing that I want to hear some badass theme music………nope not happening…

      I digress.

Forgot about Prince Of Persia! LOVE LOVE LOVED the games. Really hard and frustratingly technical, but nonetheless epic and beautiful, JG does LOOK the part. If it’s done well it could be a TON of fun, but video game adaptions don’t often turn out very well so I’m cynical.

Robin Hood should be good, I mean it’s Ridley Scott, but I’m not thrilled because it doesn’t seem necessary.

I’m TEAM ALICE btw! Hot Pixie telepathic vampires need love too.

  10. DEZMOND says:

As a huge fan of historical and sf movies, I can’t wait for CENTURION, CLASH OF THE TITANS, PRINCE OF PERSIA, THE LAST AIRBENDER, EAGLE OF THE NINTH, AGORA….. I will do my best to avoid any teenage vampires, teenage magicians and drunken super heroes :)

  11. KarenTheD says:

Kick Ass red band trailer equals awesometastic. Just got introduced to Twilight the other night courtesy of Starzz and that sh*t was hilarious, can’t wait to see the rest with their waning and waxing moon titles. I am also looking forward to the next M Night Shyamamamallaaan epic failure, although i do like the animated show..

  12. Vanessa says:

Love your chance of sucking meter! Don’t always agree on the percentage though…

  13. Red says:

Damn, forgot to do this. Will tackle it after I get my performances of the decade list done.

One movie that I was really looking foward to me, and has caused quite a bit of conversation at Sundance is “The Killer Inside Me”. I can’t wait to see Casey Affleck in a phychological murder thriller.

  14. I was never a big fan of Carroll’s Alice. Se despite having Tim Burton as the director and Johnny Depp, this is still the old Alice in Wonderland.

Now, what I really loved was American McGee’s Alice. I doubt the release year is correct, but when THIS (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0466663/) gets out someday I’ll be the first in line to buy a ticket!

  15. Thomas Gatto says:

Tree of life, Inception, Shutter Island, and Green Zone. I’d be down for Toy Story 3 but I just never got the magic and wonder I thought I would get from the trailer. Still going to see it for nostalgia reasons. i still feel those two films are the best that Pixar has to offer, at least this side of WALL-E and Ratatouille.

  16. Jose says:

Is it odd that I’m not expecting anything out of 2010? LOL
Maybe “Shutter Island” and it’s almost out, but there’s nothing I’m dying to see and can obsess about for a year in advance.

  17. Dan says:

…it’s quite depressing to see how many 3D films are coming out…

And there’s another remake of a 1980s slasher movie – and one of the most famous to boot…! Darn it Hollywood.

Then again, my most anticipated film is another sequel (of sorts) – Predators (largely because of Robert Rodriguez’s attachment and the fact it’s based on his script).

  18. Kaiderman says:

Great List! I had very similar picks on my site. My only question is are we really looking forward to The Karate Kid? I think Jackie Chan is perfect to replace Mr. Miaggi but everything else just seems wrong to me.

    • Castor says:

      Hi Kaiderman,

You are absolutely right, I’m personally not looking forward to Karate Kid and there is no chance whatsoever that I will set in theater and possibly even on DVD. I guess I put it up there just for the sake of discussion ;)

      Thanks for stopping by!

  19. Kaiderman says:

Glad to find your site! Will check back for sure. Hate to say it, but I will probably rent Karate Kid for the same reason I slow down by a car wreck on the freeway. :)
Thanks for stopping by my thing. Come back sometime!

  20. Dreher Bear says:

I am personally looking forward to (in no particular order)…

    1) Inception
    2) Toy Story 3
    3) Kick-Ass
    4) Iron Man 2
    5) The Beaver
    6) Machete

  21. Frank says:

Gosh, I just discovered “Tron” about a month ago (yes I know I’m lame). And holy crap, I can’t even wait for Tron Legacy. Same for “True Grit” is really going to be Christmas in December two Bridges films I can’t even wait for!

  22. You forgot Meet the Parents 3: little Fockers. Thats going to be the comedy of the year in my opinion. I’m possibly going to do one of these on my blog aswell :)

  23. Ummm….”Inception” should have a 0% chance of sucking (praying!)

And LOLZ for “Eclipse” … props for channeling your inner tween. Although you might have Disney Channel trying to pay you for ads now…

  24. Peter says:

Seems like everyone is looking forward to Inception. Should be very interesting, to say the least. Love your “Chances of Sucking” numbers here. For the ones that have so far been released, you’re pretty dead on. Though I would say that the Karate Kid 9who no one is looking forward to) has a 90% chance of sucking royally. :-)

  25. Fitz says:

True Grit might end up not being eligible for this list if production takes too long.
