Greatest Comedy of All-Time Tournament
Ever get in an argument with a friend, or even better a complete stranger, about which is better of two certain movies? Do you go for just laughs? A well rounded movie that made you smile and laugh? Dark humor? Everyone has there preference, and that’s one of the more enjoyable things about movies is hearing everybody’s perspective on a movie. But every once in a while, people reach a consensus that helps establish one or two movies that rise above the rest. And that, my friends, is what we are going to do here.
Starting sometime after next week, we will be conducting an interactive 128 movie tournament to try and decide the greatest comedy out there. Bold? Sure. Creative? Hardly. Crazy? Absolutely. We here at Anomalous Material specialize in crazy, and let’s face it, you like us because of it. I have done something like this before a few years back, and it turned out quite well. This will be on a much bigger scale, and I can’t wait to see how it goes.
Here is how it’s going to go down. On this post, I will let you, dear reader, nominate the comedies that you think deserve to be a part of this. There is no limit on how many you can nominate, because I’m looking to get a list of about 150. After that, I already have a few volunteers who have pledged to help me establish the rankings of the 128 movies in contention. From there, match-ups will be posted almost daily for you to vote on and discuss. And with that, start throwing names at me and I will keep this page updated as much as possible. To get things started, I will list ten movies that I think deserve to be in the tourney. I would post more, but much like the ranking system, I don’t want this to be biased towards my opinion, so I will leave the floor open for you guys to nominate films.
What you need to do:
- Nominate as many comedies as you would like in the comments section
- Don’t worry about re-nominating a movie someone already did. It may make the seeding easier for us!
Note: When it comes to a series or sequels like the Vacation series, we will just go with the best movie of that series. So when you’re nominating, don’t be afraid to speak up about a series somebody else has already mentioned. I feel the Vacation series will get the most discussion.

A sleeper of a comedy everyone should see:
Night Shift (1982), with Michael Keaton, Henry Winkler and Shelly Long.
From IMDb: A nebbish of a morgue attendant gets shunted back to the night shift where he is shackled with an obnoxious neophyte partner who dreams of the “one great idea” for success.
Michael shines and completely carries this movie, much like Mr. Mom. Winkler’s deadpan character is the perfect complement to Keaton’s manic performance. This is a hilarious, fabulous movie.
Thanks for the recommendation!
Keaton is a wonderfully underrated actor. I’m quite fond of his turn in Pacific Heights as a psycho who rents a room from a couple and makes their lives a living hell. It’s pure trash, but it’s the highest possible quality pure trash.
OK I’m late to the game:(
In no particular order, I’ll throw my nominations for
Volunteers
Animal House
Christmas Vacation
Shaun of the Dead
Beverly Hills Cop
Big Trouble in Little China (love it so, but still not sure it’d be in the running for best comedy of all time)
Zombieland
I Heart Huckabees
Back to School
Borat
Van Wilder
Back to the Future (hey if you’ve got Three Kings, then this belongs here)
Life of Brian
Young Frankenstein
Hot Fuzz
Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle
The Hangover
Mr. Mom
Encino Man
Dr. Strangelove
Sexdrive
The New Guy
Not Another Teen Movie
OSS 117: Cairo – Nest of Spies
Half Baked
And to use a line from Animal House…”Ob boy, is this great!”
Almost too late. Was just about ready to close up the nomination period.
And while I love me some Back to the Future, probably won’t include it. Three Kings won’t be included in the tourney. It was one of the first movies nominated, and I had no idea how many noms I would get back, so I kept it up there.
Thanks, will add these real quick and then close up shop.
Alright, that wraps the nomination part. I would like to thank everybody to the contribution to this. 323 different movies nominated, that is quite the staggering number. Again, thank you all. The rankings/bracket should be out sometime on Sunday or Monday.
Ok, let’s kick this pig!
40 Year Old Virgin
(500) Days of Summer
About a Boy
Ace Ventura: Pet Detective
Airplane
Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure
Love, Actually
High Fidelity
Juno
Zombieland

Young Frankenstein
Blazing Saddles
Anchorman
Blues Brothers
Black Dynamite
Princess Bride
The Hangover
Dude, I am so stoked to see the results of this contest, although if there’s any justice “Holy Grail” will cream the competition and “Young Frankenstein” will place a close second! I don’t envy the wading and list reading and weeping/wailing/gnashing of teeth you’ll have to do to come up with a winner!
I think it’s safe to say we are all pretty damn excited to get this tournament started. I’m not sure how Red will be able to sort out 350+ movies into a 128 tournament. Some tough cuts ahead!
…and lets hope Bad Santa does rather well too, M! If I remember correctly – it’s your It’s A Wonderful Life just with (more) sex!
My money is on Grail to take the win. Because it always does in these sorts of things, but also because it deserves it.
The 40 Year Old Virgin
Annie Hall
The Big Lebowski
Zoolander
Borat
Tropic Thunder
Let’s see, these aren’t exactly in order but hopefully they’re relevant. And I hope it’s not too late?
Blazing Saddles
OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies
Drop Dead Gorgeous
Better Off Dead
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Wet Hot American Summer
The Court Jester
The Imposters
Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion
Clueless
Cannibal! The Musical
Saved!
Shaun of the Dead
Hot Fuzz
Super Troopers

A Town Called Panic (Panique Au Village)
Mallrats
Amelie
Midnight Run
The Wrong Guy
Heathers
Zombieland
In the Loop
Mystery Men
Arsenic and Old Lace
Galaxy Quest
Love, Actually
Baseketball
Thanks Alex…Most of these were nominated, but listing them again will help out with making the bracket.
I’m kind of upset that no one nominated Mallrats.
I was going to throw it on the list, but four other Kevin Smith films were mentioned, and he’ll be lucky to sneak just one in. Nobody nominated it, so I left it off, even though I do like the film.
I’m with ya Kevin. Mallrats is my favorite Kevin Smith film
