Since All The Cool Kids Are Doing It…

Anomalous Material has yet again been tagged in a meme, this time by Univarn from Life in Equinox. For any newcomers to the meme game, once a person tags you (dang you, Univarn!!), you must reply to the same seven questions with answers of your own. And if you don’t, giant Graboids will burst through your floor and demolish you. And since I don’t have Kevin Bacon at my disposal, I think I’ll just answer the questions. Here they are:

1) What was you first movie-going experience?

AladdinRed: Yikes. This is a pretty hard question to answer. I kind of want to say Aladdin (1992), which would’ve put me at four years old. One of the last truly great animated movies that Disney pushed out, with The Lion King coming out two years after. Jafar turning into a snake was one of the most terrifying things of my early movie-going, and will be something I will never forget.

Castor: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990) was my first movie-going experience. Accordingly, I don’t remember anything about the movie but you probably know that since I told you a week ago. (Memo: Internet meme are cool every now and then, but every week… It gets a bit redundant!)

2) How many DVDs do you own?

Red: 36, in which over 1/6 of those are The Lord of the Rings. I am not huge on buying movies. I would rather rent them or just go watch them in theaters. Unless it’s a movie that I looked forward to for a long time, when i do buy a DVD it’s usually previously viewed discs from Blockbuster. 5 movies for $20 compared to spending $20-25 fora new one? Yes please.

Castor: I have 44 DVDs. 43 of them in my possession. Code, you have my Letters from Iwo Jima! I have stopped buying DVDs long ago. Maybe someday, I will resume that but I’m not as materialistic as I once was so owning movie is near the bottom of my priorities. Also, it is fairly rare that I intentionally re-watch movies unless they are part of my guilty pleasures. I do buy pay-per-view every now and then, but thanks to Tivo, I can record those so it’s actually a very cheap method of owning a new release!

3) What is your guilty pleasure movie?

The Hot Chick with Rob Schneider and Anna FarisRed: Oh boy, do I have plenty. I do tend to find Rob Schneider or Eddie Griffin movies better than others. Movies such has The Hot Chick (2002), Undercover Brother (2002), The New Guy (2002) and to a point The Animal (2001) always get me laughing, and are very re-watchable. Undercover Brother was a goldmine for me for one-liners when I still had my hair grown out.

Castor: Ahaha Red, I cannot say the same thing about Rob Schneider. For the sake of entertainment (since that’s the point), I will name possibly one of my most embarrassing one: 13 Going on 30 (2004). Is it the kid’s fairy tale story? The way New York City is shot? The cheesy pop songs erupting every 10 minutes? I truly don’t know why… I’m not even a Jennifer Gardner fan!

4) You have compiled a list of your top 100 movies. Which movies didn’t make the cut?

Red: Quite a few. When I made my list, I had well over 150 movies from the past decade that could have been fit to be in.  Watching  a movie like Man on Fire the other day, I thought “How in bloody hell did I leave this movie off my list?”. Also, it was pointed out that I had somewhat ignored the sports genre, which is fairly odd because most people think of me as a sports geek…well….at least that’s one of many types of geek that my friends probably consider me. But if I wanted to squeeze a sports movie in, I would probably go with Remember the Titans. Flawed? Yes. Unforgettable? Even more so.

Castor: Tough question since I haven’t made a list of my top 100 Movies but I’m going to go with 25th Hour (2002) and Heat (1995). They are very good movies but I could see them being on the edge and getting cut. You know… so I can insert a Rob Schneider flick at #100 ;)

5) Which movie(s) do you compulsively watch over and over again?

Red: I do this quite a bit. There is no telling how many times I have watched The Lord of the Rings, especially in high school. Heck, I’ve watched the countless hours of special features on the extended versions several times, and it really does sadden me when I think about how many hours of my life have been spent watching what Peter Jackson gave us. It’s a good thing that that there aren’t two movies coming out in the next few years….

Castor: I don’t usually do this intentionally (as in firing up the DVD) but if I stumble upon any of the following movies on TV, there is very little chance that I will change the channel. Anchorman, Wedding Crashers, Saving Private Ryan, Blackhawk Down, Gladiator, Forrest Gump, Batman Begins, Lord of the Rings, and probably a dozen more.

6) Classic(s) you’re embarrassed to admit you haven’t seen yet?

Red: There’s plenty of them. A lot of the 60′s and 70′s classics I still haven’t watched. Quite a few of Clint Eastwood’s movies are still awaiting me, as well as Meryl Streep’s. Which is quite surprising, because I consider her probably the greatest actress ever.

Castor: Way too many and I really need to work on seeing more black and white movies and other classics. Ben Hur (1959), Citizen Kane (1941), North by Northwest (1959), Sunset Boulevard (1950), To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), Chinatown (1974), 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) are some among many others.

7) What movie posters do you have hanging on your wall?

Red: As of right now? None. I never put them back up when I moved into my new apartment last fall. But ones that I have and should be up are:

  • Lord of the Rings (one for each movie)
  • The Crow
  • The Dark Knight (obviously a Joker one, framed art as well)
  • 300 (“Tonight, we dine in hell!”…framed art)
  • Iron Man (framed art)
  • Let the Right One In

Those are the ones I currently have in my house. I probably have more from the late 90′s and early 00′s elsewhere, but wouldn’t have a clue as to what movies they might be.

Castor: I haven’t bought a movie poster in a very long time. The last one I bought is Quantum of Solace and it is still in its tube! Like DVDs, I’m not really spending money on that stuff anymore but maybe someday, I will get back to collecting some select movie posters on a (very) limited basis. What’s on the wall:

  • Braveheart
  • Saving Private Ryan
  • Walk the Line
  • Training Day
  • Rescue Dawn
  • Blackhawk Down
  • Batman Begins
  • Flag of Our Fathers
  • 3:10 to Yuma

This concludes this 7 Movie Facts Meme about us. I suppose I have to tag other bloggers so I’m going to go with some new people for once (Forgive me usual suspects !!).

    Dear Anomalous Material,

Sorry for tagging you in the latest meme, after having just tagged you a week ago. In order to make up for it I will now seek out every internet meme known to man, and tag you in all of them. That way you’ll be done with them all, and will never have to worry about them again.

    Sincerely,

    Univarn.

  2. How do you avoid seeing Ben Hur? It’s impossible to miss this over here, especially during Easter and Christmas though it has no big religious significance. Aladdin is a goodie although the transformation I remember most was Jasmine going “evil”. Hottest animated character?

I can’t say why 13 Going on 30 is so enjoyable either, it’s probably Mark Ruffalo.

  3. Haha damn you! Kidding, these are actually some fun questions that I wouldn’t mind answering.

Castor – I vividly remember my experience seeing TMNT in the theaters… I don’t know if I was ever more excited for a film up to that point!

Red – I used to be a Schneider fan too. It was about a decade or so ago, but definitely happened…

  4. Ripley says:

Sorry, but Rob Schneider looks like he’d kill a prostitute, and I hate his guts.

But, yay, Let The Right One In!

  5. rtm says:

First thing first, you give me a hard time for not having seen The Last of the Mohicans when you haven’t seen Ben Hur???!? How could you??! [sigh] Ok, now that I’ve got it out my system… all I’m gonna say is: get that on your list, pronto!!! You’ll wonder why you’ve waited so long.

As for #5, high five on Batman Begins & Gladiator, in fact the latter is what I’ll be watching right after I’m done with this comment :)

    • Castor says:

Ahahah You got me Ruth! I’ll try to catch it on cable someday. That’s what TIVO is for :)

      • rtm says:

Well since we live in the same city, I might as well lend you my dvd! See the full version Castor, not the TV one as they usually cut a bunch of stuff out. Regardless of your belief, that scene where Christ gave Judah water is one of the most moving scenes I’ve ever seen… and of course the chariot race scene is one that’s formidable to replicate, even in the age of mighty CGI effect, because technology simply cannot make great acting!

  6. kirsten says:

Ooh! I love memes. Will totally get on to that.

  7. Robert says:

    Yea! I promise I shall comply. :)

  8. Kevin says:

Thanks for the tag, man. I got right on that.

  9. Red says:

I caught a bit of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (I and III) on television today. It’s easy to froget how epically awesome that first one was. “Aw, fellow chucker, eh?”

Too bad the third one was filled with major plot holes galore.

  10. Heather says:

    Ha! I love Undercover Brother!

And Castor, I have also not seen Citizen Kane, though I keep intending on watching it.

  11. CMrok93 says:

Finally somebody actually agrees with me on The Hot Chick. Almost everybody I know hates this movie, except for me and my other friend. That is also one of my guilty pleasures as well. Though I can’t say that The New Guy is there with me. But anyway good job with this check out mine: http://dtmmr.wordpress.com/2010/05/02/seven-movie-questions/

    • Red says:

The Hot Chick is on a higher level for me than The New Guy, but it usually doesn’t go more than a minute without getting a chuckle out of me. Besides, it has Zooey in one of her earlier roles. :)

  12. Kaiderman says:

Dude… 4 years old when you saw Aladdin, Red??? I suddenly feel very, very old! [depressed sigh]

  13. Fitz says:

I have that same Joker poster in my room along with: The Departed, Hot Fuzz, and Sin City all hanging on my wall.

  14. Luke says:

Oh god. I saw that still from The Hot Chick and threw up a little. But the one from Aladdin more than makes up for it. :)

  15. FRC Ruben says:

The Floating red Couch lives in Pacifica, birthplace of Robby Schneider. Every August, signs are hung on trees announcing sign ups for the Rob Schneider School of Acting at the Pacifica Community Center (that’s not a joke, though it sounds like one)

  16. Olive says:

@Red; Must catch up on some Clint Eastwood films myself. Ordered a couple off Amazon over the weekend, so looking forward to finally seeing all of them!

    @Castor; I’m impressed about 13 Going on 30!

  17. Frank says:

“Walk the Line” had one of the best posters ever. It just commands your attention.

  18. Making a Top 100 list is endlessly stressful. Seriously. I made mine months ago and I keep rearranging it — probably once a week — as I see classic movies I should have seen years ago, or I think of a movie I forgot about. Probably it’s the kind of list that will never be finished!
