  1. Hoping that Caddyshack makes it to the final four. I just watched a documentary on the creation of Caddyshack, pretty good watch. If anyone is interested it’s playing on the .Bio channel on Sunday ( http://www.biography.com/listings/episode_details.do?episodeid=510360&airingid=572894 ).

  2. Heather says:

As long as no one upsets Caddyshack everyone gets to live. :)

  3. Heather says:

And the Tweet button isn’t working. I’ve tried tweeting your stuff all morning and it keeps saying it’s already tweeted. I call shenanigans.

  4. Univarn says:

I’m really hoping The Great Dictator can find a way to get through this. It’s my #4 film ALL TIME, and I just love it to death. But not many people have seen it. Especially not compared to The Graduate. Which I find is a shame. If it does get out of the round, I’d love to do a post on it to try and earn it some support.

*crossing my fingers* Such tough competition.

Voted chalk for the rest. Lots of my favorite odd ball comedies.

    • Have to agree with you, Great Dictator is fantastic. One of Chaplin’s best. Hope it doesn’t share the fate of Some Like it Hot.

      • Castor says:

Poor Some Like It Hot muahahah. It’s crazy, there is forum posts sending people here to vote for Some Like it Hot but most people end up voting for Galaxy instead.

    • Univarn says:

It seems the same thing ended up happening for The Great Dictator. Such great movies, and while I know not everyone loves them, they’re also way too unseen. And they seem to be suffering because of it. Oh well, I suppose I’ll throw my support behind some of the Brooks films.

    • Dan says:

As much as I love the older films to do well…Dictator V The Graduate…for me…there is only one winner – The Graduate – a film I absolutely adore. The Great Dictator is the influencial masterpiece but The Graduate speaks to me on so many levels I simply can’t vote for Chaplin. The Graduate is a msterpiece in its own right. Shame these two had to meet in the first round.

It has been a tough one for me – I seemed to have voted for the least favoured in each case. Harold and Maude is amazing but it won’t get through – it’s too dark for the majority of people’s tastes and Caddyshack will get the unsure voter’s vote as its more well known. But my vote went to Harold and Maude (Hal Ashby – you are my hero!!!)

  5. NO! NO! NO! Mike Nichols, Dustin Hoffman AND Anne Baxter’s greatest cannot go out on the first round people. Vote for The freakin’ Graduate!!!!

    PS. Sorry Uni.

    • Univarn says:

I love The Graduate so no qualms there (it’s in my top 100). But Great Dictator is my #1 comedy all time. Besides when I think of The Graduate I think it’s funny, but it’s always struck me more as a social parody than a real comedy. Then again I’ve been wrong before :)

    • Dan says:

…one more vote for The Graduate! :)

  6. Red says:

    Absolutely loving the McShay/Kiper picture.

Here’s to hoping that The Princess Bride holds up against Nemo.

  7. Packerken says:

Inigo Montoya is going to throw down on some mofos if Princess Bride doesn’t carry through the round.

  8. Andrew says:

This is easily my favorite group of seedings so far. What a tough bunch of picks.

  9. rtm says:

It’s actually tough for me today as I haven’t seen a few of them so I’m kind of winging it. Princess Bride ought to win hands down, though having it against Nemo is brilliant so it’s not so lopsided.

  10. Heather says:

I kind of wanted a When Harry Met Sally upset, but I don’t think it’s going to happen.

  11. Ronan says:

Haven’t seen half of them. Really want to see Princess Bride, keep hearing good things about it, so for now I am voting for Nemo. Nemo is class!
Don’t really remember The Graduate being a comedy. Like When Harry Met Sally! Good chemistry, witty dialogue.

    • Dan says:

As you don’t remember much about The Graduate Ronan – can I just say it’s brilliant so why not give it another vote! ;)

  12. Kaiderman says:

Animation has no place in this tournament… I’m just gonna say what everyone is thinking! :)

    • Ronan says:

Wholeheartedly disagree with my right honourable friend. Animation has every right to be included and should not be discounted. Some of the best comedies I have seen have been hand drawn or pixelated. Toy Story, Nemo, The Incredibles, Monsters Inc. knock all of the above out of the park for me.
Plus, there is nothing more subjective than the sense of humour.

      • rtm says:

I’m with Ronan! They’re often as funny if not funnier than ‘regular’ movies, especially Pixar flicks, but I also LOVE Chicken Run.

      • Castor says:

Absolutely, don’t look down on animations because they are “kiddies” entertainment Kai ;)

      • Peter says:

I would agree with Ronan. Some animated films are much more creative and funnier than most of the shit that Hollywood has thrown at us in recent years. Much rather see Monsters, Inc. than a pathetic rom-com with Katherine Heigl. I am looking more forward to Despicable Me than seeing any remakes or sequel comedies due out this summer.

  13. Fitz says:

As much as I like The Graduate, I’ve never thought of it as a comedy.

  14. Ripley says:

How is Harold & Maude losing?

Though it is appropriate that The Great Dictator and The Graduate are tied.

  15. Jose says:

Interesting how a lot of the movies this time linger so dangerously between drama and comedy. I love The Graduate but I’d never vote for it as a comedy for example.

  16. Kevin says:

First of all, I hate you for making me choose between The Graduate and The Great Dictator. Those are two of my favorite movies.

Second of all, it should be a common courtesy thing to only vote on match-ups when you have actually seen both movies. The only sensible reason Some Like it Hot would lose to a movie like Galaxy Quest is because many less people have seen Some Like it Hot.

    • Univarn says:

I agree, but not everyone does. So I think a lot of people want to vote for what they enjoy. Besides, people also get caught up underdog/upset stories. I could see a case where about 1/3rd of the votes go because people feel Some Like it Hot is overrated. But the rest… I don’t know. I really found that shocking.

The Graduate and The Great Dictator so close (with Graduate up at the moment) is what I notch mostly up to people having not seen Great Dictator. The reason I say that is not because Graduate is bad, love the movie. Rather, it’s not so much a comedy as a dramady that leans drama about half way through.

  17. Dan says:

Speaking of Dustin Hoffman and The Graduate – my Top 10 Dustin Hoffman films – http://www.top10films.co.uk/archives/1026

  18. Peter says:

Rent your Chaplin people!!! Great Dictator is an ageless comedy and one of film’s greatest! The Graduate is barely a comedy — and this is a COMEDY tournament. I love The Graduate, but so sorry to see it lose to Chaplin’s first talkie which was a brilliant story and so, so funny. Shame that it lost to a dramedy…
