A Scene in the Rain
Andrew from Encore Entertainment has organized a blogathon about the most memorable rain scenes in movie history. Let’s face it, there are many, many memorable scenes in the rain so which one to choose? I did not want to go with a scene that, most likely, people would think of right away. Here is mine:
I love the amplified sound of the rain throughout, the fact that it is nearly completely dialogue-less as well as in slow-motion gives the killing a poetic feel. The soundtrack by Thomas Newman complements the scene perfectly.

Very nice, you’re right not what one would expect. I have a lot of love for this movie, even if it’s not an absolute favourite. It’s so underrated (and one of the times I have no problem with Hanks whatsoever.)
I love how it’s almost completely silent.
I immediately think of the opening scene in Rashomon. Kurosawa uses rain a lot throughout his work, but it especially well used in Rashomon.
it’s… That’s what I get for not re-reading my comments.
Ah I have yet to see Rashomon but I did consider going with Seven Samurai
Ah man, you’re missing out! Rashomon is excellent.
It’s on my Netflix queue
A scene in the rain…I always keep thinking of Andy’s escape in The Shawshank Redemption.
Yes Anna, certainly one of the most memorable one out there
Yep. In fact, when it’s raining heavy (and I don’t have an umbrella) I like to stretch my arms out like Andy in the poster – it’s an iconic shot. And even i don’t like the film as much as most.
I’m with Anna on Shawshank. Both that scene and this one, are among my all time favorite moments. More recently the burial scene in Drag Me to Hell was pretty awesome. Can’t think of any others off the top of my head, but I’m sure there’s plenty of others I love if I were to look through my dvd collection.
There is so many rain scenes out there, your favorite movie? Seven Samurai! Spiderman, Blade Runner, The Rock (I was initially going to go with that rain opening scene with Ed Harris), Singin’ in the Rain, The Notebook, Unforgiven, Forrest Gump, Saving Private Ryan!!
This was a good idea for a blogathon. Personally? I’d go with 2000′s Nowhere to Hide, for the scene that the third Matrix film borrowed liberally from.
My fave rain scene is the Battle of Helm’s Deep in Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. The whole amazing war happened while sheets of rain fell from the sky, but it’s very well choreographed and the action is top-notch.
lol, mine turned into a Top5 xD
Buffy and Angel has a great fight scene in a rainy alley in the second season. It kicks Matrix rain scene in the ass.
Wait, I got another one. What about that scene in Magnolia where it starts raining frogs?
Singin’ in the Rain | Saving Private Ryan | The Notebook | Pride & Prejudice | Breakfast at Tiffany’s | Spider-Man | Jurassic Park | Road to Perdition | Poltergeist | The Shawshank Redemption | Hollywood’s Top Ten | Movie Trailers
well, this one is cheating xD
I win
Pride and Prejudice? The film? That alone makes me sceptical.
Great choice, though.
Bladerunner is pretty awesome. It seems like it rained through that entire movie if I recall…even inside!
Yep. Se7en is another one where it was always raining as well (except at the finale, if I recall).
High Fidelity all the way man…
Haven’t seen this movie yet, so I don’t want to see the clip. But I’ve seen stills of this scene and it gives me chills, no doubt it’d linger in your memory. Spidey isn’t my fave superhero flick, but that upside down kiss is downright sexy! From what I read, shooting the scene proved to be a tricky one though, probably nowhere near as sexy as it looks on screen.
I ended up going with a Jane Austen theme for mine, nothing is more romantic than rain right?
The best scene in the rain ever is in “John Rambo”, near the beginning, where amidst a tropical downpour, Rambo explains to Julie Benz’s character why war is the natural state of being, and peace is an accident.
