Hollywood Fantasy Draft: Round 7

The Seventh Round (Please Read Below)

The final round of the Hollywood Fantasy Draft is upon us! I personally had a great time organizing and participating in this and I hope you all did as well! Now that the draft is concluding, please check out the Cumulative Draft Tracker which will show you the final teams each producer assembled. There, you can also discuss the direction each producer is taking with their team as well as start discussing what type of movie they are going to pitch.

What’s Next?

The Supplemental Draft

We will take one day to rest before the start of the 3-round supplemental draft which will be conducted on Saturday/Sunday. You will not be required to participate or add any more cast member to your team. If you need to pick additional actors, then this is the perfect occasion to round out your cast!

Pitch your Movie

After the supplemental draft concludes on Sunday, all 27 participants will be invited to pitch their movie. You will be given the opportunity to do so either on your blog or as a guest blogger here on Anomalous Material. The movie pitches will be rolled out progressively (one a day) starting MONDAY, AUGUST 30, 2010. This will give you at least one full week to come up with your pitch. There will be more information about this on Sunday.

How to Pitch your Movie

Put in as little or as much time as you would like to put into this since we are doing this for fun only. The minimum required that will be expected are:

  • A logline: The 1 or 2 sentences that captures the concept of your film
  • A quick 2 or 3-sentence description that gives some background about the movie you are pitching: The genre, the premise and the scope of your film
  • A summary: the theme, the plot, the main characters, their goals, the conflict, what’s at risk and why should we care, any pivotal events or emotional turning points, and the conclusion.
  • Answer questions as they come

This can be as brief or as detailed as you would like as long as it stays within these requirements.

How to Prepare for your Pitch

  • You should immediately develop the basic idea, the logline for your movie: The logline is one or two sentence that summarize the concept of your movie. For example: “Are you interested in a story about a man who lives in the Statue of Liberty?” (A real and successful logline)
  • You should have a firm grasp of your main characters and their roles in the story
  • You should be able to explain why so and so is going to play so and so
  • You should begin to develop some basic outline or treatment for your story

A treatment includes the theme of the film, its plot, the characters and their story arcs, the key sequences and their purpose within the plot and theme, and the temporal structure of the film.

Notes: Some of you have hit the limit for the number of actors or actresses you can have in the round of 7. A reminder, you can only have 4 actors (or actresses) maximum. Any selection that goes above that limit will be denied.

Seventh Round

ProducerCommentPick

164.Red Beard

"Since my 7th Round pick was chosen at the end of the last round, I’m going to go to my back up pick Colin Firth. I’ve always thought of him as the ‘romance guy’ but after The Single Man I’ve been seeing him in a new light and think he’d be the perfect fit in my film."

165.Travis

"I’m surprised it took this long for him to get drafted but I guess I’m not going to squander this opportunity to take him while I can. My seventh round pick is none other than the legendary Morgan Freeman. Why? Because he’s Morgan F’n Freeman. His voice is powerful and soulful, he can steal any movie he’s in, he can do any genre and he can even make a film about penguins interesting. He’s also worked with Nolan before on the Batman films and they have a good working relationship. So my seventh round pick is Freeman…the voice of god."

166. Dan

"7th rnd – Richard Dreyfuss – Every time Richard Dreyfuss and Steven Spielberg work together they can’t go wrong – JAWS & CLOSE ENCOUNTERS. Dreyfuss needs one last big hit before he retires. Here’s his chance alongside Hoffman."

167. Anna

"My final choice is Emile Hirsch. His performances in Milk and Into the Wild blew me away (he sholud’ve been nominated for the latter). He is, for sure, a rising actor you shouldn’t ignore."

168.Novroz

"I couldn’t think of any man better than my 7th pick to be Cillian Murphy’s father. This time I will go back to Ireland and pick Liam Neeson. He has the charisma of a wise man, he is a great actor and I love this old man."

169. Joel

"I choose Sarah Michelle Gellar. She has proven herself in so many ways on Buffy and its a shame her feature career never took of. She’ll be perfect as an martial arts expert in this action ensemble!"

170. Chris

"The last pick… the twist in the tail… BAM! IT’S TOM SELLECK!

If you guys knew me a little better (and probably this time next time you will do) it would’ve been obvious from the start that he’d figure somewhere in my line up. I love this guy, he’s my hero. I think it’s time he tried something a little more menacing and he’s going to be the brains behind my antagonists’ operations. Woohoo!"

171. Red

"Steven Soderbergh has experience working with several stars, as well as delivering action packed movies without giving up artistic integrity."

172. Castor

I pick the enigmatic Terrence Malick, the perfect example of someone focusing on quality over quantity with only 4 masterful movies made in 4 decades: Badlands, Days of Heaven, The Thin Red Line and The New World. Thankfully, The Tree of Life is coming out later this year and his next film is on tap to begin shooting in October. Malick is absolutely what I need for the type of film I'm going for. He is extremely deliberate and favors a contemplative style that puts an heavy emphasis on natural backgrounds, metaphoric allusions and dialogue-less scenes. Each frame of his movie is a painting that he crafts meticulously for months in the editing room. His movies have a lyrical quality that absolutely no one else can come close to.

173. Corey

"Casey Affleck. The most talented actor with the last name Affleck, he should fit in nicely with the cast I've put together so far."

174. Kai

"Since I have a young cast, I’ll take Chris Pine, and stick with that theme. I pick him cuz he’s turned out to be more than just a pretty face and I dig him and want to use him and I do this part of the draft better than everyone! haha"

175. Peter

"My last pick will be the Iranian-born actress Shohreh Aghdashloo. She is lovely. Wonderful performances in “House of Sand and Fog” and “The Stoning of Soraya M.” I missed her on “24″ which I have never seen. But she has old-time Hollywood beauty and is a very good contrast to Ms. Jessica Lange."

176. Ruth

"Ok, my 7th round pick is Dame Helen Mirren. Is an explanation necessary? I think not. The beautiful 65-year-old is one of the best actresses working today (of any age!) I feel like I’ve been seeing her a lot lately: The Queen, State of Play, The Last Station, RED… and I’m constantly amazed by her performance. She’d be a wonderful addition to my cast and a suitable mother figure to 41-year-old Cate Blanchett."

177.Jonathan

CAST COMPLETED

178. Ripley

"Okay, I pick Robert Sheehan, because he’s kind of adorable on Misfits, and is in Red Riding with (already picked) Andrew Garfield and Rebecca Hall, and I guiltily dig Young Blades reruns.”

179. Heather

"Since someone already grabbed SMG I’m taking my next choice which is Nathan Fillion. He is one of the most underutilized actors out there today, and without a doubt the brilliant Joss Whedon has seen and used the ultimate charisma, charm, and talents of this man. I’m sure I’m not the only one who is enamored by his work and sees a long future before him. He is the final piece of my well……..disjointed, but interesting cast."

180. Richard

"Okay, I’m going for Paul Giamatti next. Love this guy. He’s a fantastic actor. Giamatti does the perfect hangdog good guy, and the perfect snarling bad guy. Best of both worlds in one little package."

181. Marc

"For the 7th Round, I chose Michelle Yeoh. As of late she's been known for token female martial artist roles but that's high time it changed. Her poise is what makes he compelling and I think she's capable of more than just high kicks. She can really dish out the hits but there's still a soft side under all that flashy and fierce fighting."

182. Clara

Round 7: Richard Jenkins: A truly wonderful character actor rounds out my supporting cast.

183. This Guy

"“Staying true to the “Tarantino Touch”, I’m selecting Mr. Kevin Bacon to be revitalized and made cool beyond novelty once again. His fearlessness to go to the dark side is amazing but well-balanced with a great sense of humor. Not to mention he works well within an ensemble AND can be connected to every actor in this Fantasy Draft within six degrees!”"

184. Fitz

"My final pick is Christina Hendricks."

185. Andrew Robinson

"With my 7th Rnd. Draft pick I will go with geek friendly FELICIA DAY. She was great in Dr. Horrible Sing Along Blog and is lovely in her webseries: The Guild. Also having experience having worked with Joss Whedon and having a quaint likable quality to her she’ll fit perfectly in my cast."

186. CS

"Spike Jonze – A visionary who has not even reached his prime yet. I would love to see how he handles this talented cast of actors/actresses."

187. Michael

"Matthew Perry! Since I’ve seen him in Friends I knew I wanted to work with him. He has a way to deliver jokes like no else. I think he can be a very actor if taken seriously!"

188. Neon

"Now is time to pick my director. My director has to be a visionary, someone who no matter how dark it gets they are always moving forward in search of the light at the end of the tunnel. And no matter what the end result is they will swear by their life as well as by the life of their children that they have made a GREAT MOVIE! So without further ado my Director is none other than…Claudio Fragasso. That's right! the same visionary that brought us such films as Troll 2 and…??????"

189. Joel (From Ben)

"I'll go with Patrick Stewart for my second 7th round pick.

Patrick is another great ensemble actor and here he will be playing the small part of a scientist working on a miracle medicine."

190. ACPG

"With my seventh round pick, I’ll take Annette Bening…she’s a great actress who can play a character nobody really likes well (see American Beauty)…"

191. Andrew

"Rosamund Pike: It sucks that Halle Berry's star turn (of sorts) in Die Another Day is more remembered than Pike's brilliance...it also sucks that no one seems to remember that she was good in Pride & Prejudice and more than just good in An Education. I'm casting her to make up for it..."rosamund pike

You know you just won a LAMMY, right? hahahaha

    • Castor says:

Ahaha thanks Kai but let’s face it, I will take the fun we’ve had the past week as well as what’s in store when we get to read everyone’s pitch over all the Lammy’s in the world ;)

  2. ACPG says:

whoops…guess i’ve hit the actor limit…that ruins my plan to save one of Hollywood’s (and my) favorites from the undrafted pool

somebody seriously needs to find a way to fit Will Smith into their movie…

  3. @Castor

Can I make a post on my blog and then let you post it here as a guest post? with a link back to my site of course?

This has been a blast btw… I think I’m going to use the supplemental rounds to buy some cameo roles just for fun.

    • Castor says:

Absolutely! I hope to be able to post at least excerpt of everyone’s pitch (with your permissions) with appropriate linking of course. I will start making a page for each individual team. More on this tomorrow!

      • cool.. anyways I sent in my pick for the round because I doubt anyone has the balls (or the memory) to pick her. She fits perfectly in this movie and even though there’s someone else in my mind that could work I like the one I sent in more.

      • Novroz says:

Is it okay to post it before August 30? I already wrote my draft, I will perfect it once the additional pick is finished. It doesn’t have to be on August 30, right?

Do we have to choose screenwriter too?

        • Castor says:

No screenwriter, you can name one in your pitch if you would like though. Also, feel free to post before August 30 but I will not link to it until your assigned date which will be determined later.

  4. Clarabela says:

Can I have 2 child actors for the price of 1? I don’t have a part for Will Smith, but I am considering Willow Smith for a bit part.

I will work on my pitch this weekend. I am excited to see what everyone does with these stellar casts.

  5. Alright I’m ready to make my last pick…till the supplemental draft.

I’m surprised it took this long for him to get drafted but I guess I’m not going to squander this opportunity to take him while I can. So my seventh round pick is Freeman…the voice of god.

  6. Man, I am dreading this last pick… It’s one that could potentially change the entire scope of my film (and send me into the supplemental draft.) Hopefully I have the time to sleep on it before choosing tomorrow.

  7. Clarabela says:

I would take Jaden too, but I don’t have a part fro him and I need another supporting actress.

  8. Dan says:

7th rnd – Richard Dreyfuss – Every time Richard Dreyfuss and Steven Spielberg work together they can’t go wrong – JAWS & CLOSE ENCOUNTERS. Dreyfuss needs one last big hit before he retires. Here’s his chance alongside Hoffman.

  9. Anna says:

  11. rtm says:

Darn, I didn’t realize I’ve maxed out on my actors pick, I still have 2 more I need, so I guess I’ll have to wait until tomorrow, right? So what’s the supplemental draft thing? Sorry I might’ve missed what that’s about. Thanks Castor.

    • Castor says:

Yep, you can wait until Friday to pick new actors. The supplemental draft is just an extra 3 round for anyone interested :)

      • rtm says:

Oh ok. Good, I’ll be fine tuning my movie idea this weekend. Fingers crossed the two actors I want is still available. Oh this is probably what REAL producers feel like, huh? :D

  12. Joel Burman says:

I guess I can reveal my pick when I’m on the clock.

I choose Sarah Michelle Gellar. She has proven herself in so many ways on Buffy and its a shame her feature career never took of. She’ll be perfect as an martial arts expert in this action ensemble!

  13. Novroz says:

Right before I go to bed…perfect timing :)

I couldn’t think of any man better than my 7th pick to be Cillian Murphy’s father. This time I will go back to Ireland and pick Liam Neeson. He has the charisma of a wise man, he is a great actor and I love this old man.

  14. Joel Burman says:

I think that was one of few box office successes she have had and after that she have got several chances again but the films haven’t really delievered finacially or critics wise.

  15. Chris says:

The last pick… the twist in the tail… BAM! IT’S TOM SELLECK!

If you guys knew me a little better (and probably this time next time you will do) it would’ve been obvious from the start that he’d figure somewhere in my line up. I love this guy, he’s my hero. But she has old-time Hollywood beauty and is a very good contrast to Ms. Jessica Lange.

  20. Heather says:

I’m heading to work, so once again I sending in my pick a little bit early with the hopes that nobody is a meanie and will snipe it.

Since someone already grabbed SMG I’m taking my next choice which is Nathan Fillion. He is one of the most underutilized actors out there today, and without a doubt the brilliant Joss Whedon has seen and used the ultimate charisma, charm, and talents of this man. Okay, I’m going for Paul Giamatti next. Love this guy. He’s a fantastic actor. Giamatti does the perfect hangdog good guy, and the perfect snarling bad guy. Best of both worlds in one little package.

Sorry, I’ve been kinda quiet the last few days. Busy, busy.

  22. Castor, post the seventh choice I sent you whenever and seeing that I need someone else for my movie I’ll be sending you an eight one too. I have to say, Ruth and Anna have me most interested. Those casts are just looking brilliant. I sat down, looked at my cast and realised it’s all pointing towards a book…is that allowed?

  23. Ripley says:

Joseph Gordon-Levitt, because he’s my official Favorite Person Under 30 That’s Not European Of Some Sort.

    • Castor says:

Denied! Kai picked him in the first round! lol :)

      • Ripley says:

He picked him as a director. I pick him as an actor.

        Edit:

        “Damn.

Okay, I pick Robert Sheehan, because he’s kind of adorable on Misfits, and is in Red Riding with (already picked) Andrew Garfield and Rebecca Hall, and I guiltily dig Young Blades reruns.”

  24. Marc says:

For the 7th Round, I chose Michelle Yeoh. As of late she’s been known for token female martial artist roles but that’s high time it changed. She can really dish out the hits but there’s still a soft side under all that flashy and fierce fighting.

    • Novroz says:

Nice pick :) I like her even before she hits Hollywood

    • rtm says:

“…she’s capable of more than just high kicks” Kudos for recognizing that Marc! She definitely has that elegance and grace about her that’d be suitable for a dramatic story. I for one would love to see more of her softer side.

  25. Clarabela says:

Round 7: Richard Jenkins: A truly wonderful character actor rounds out my supporting cast.

  26. In seven rounds and I still can’t figure out why my images won’t post… hurmmm……..

“Staying true to the “Tarantino Touch”, I’m selecting Mr. Kevin Bacon to be revitalized and made cool beyond novelty once again. His fearlessness to go to the dark side is amazing but well-balanced with a great sense of humor. Not to mention he works well within an ensemble AND can be connected to every actor in this Fantasy Draft within six degrees!”

  27. So this time around I’ve pushed myself into a corner and apparently I’m being forced to select an actress… damn league rules. Anyways, I was planning on it anyways so I don’t know why I’m complaining. With my 7th Rnd. Draft pick I will go with geek friendly FELICIA DAY. She was great in Dr. Horrible Sing Along Blog and is lovely in her webseries: The Guild. Also having experience having worked with Joss Whedon and having a quaint likeable quality to her she’ll fit perfectly in my cast.

  28. Castor says:

Ohoh I think I made a fatal mistake!! Ruth is not on the table AAAAAARRRRRHG!

    • rtm says:

Fatal mistake??? I’m still alive Castor! :D Ok, my 7th round pick is Dame Helen Mirren. Is an explanation necessary? I think not. The beautiful 65-year-old is one of the best actresses working today (of any age!) I feel like I’ve been seeing her a lot lately: The Queen, State of Play, The Last Station, RED… and I’m constantly amazed by her performance. She’d be a wonderful addition to my cast and a suitable mother figure to 41-year-old Cate Blanchett.

  29. Kaiderman says:

So, if I was on the clock before Heather and wanted Fillion, shouldn’t I get him? I mean, sorry I have a job and kids to feed!!!
    FINE!!!
Since I have a young cast, I’ll take Chris Pine, and stick with that theme.
Need help with a pic Castor. No time!
I pick him cuz he’s turned out to be more than just a pretty face and I dig him and want to use him and I do this part of the draft better than everyone! haha

  30. Castor says:

Joel selects Patrick Stewart with his last pick

  31. Rosamund Pike: It sucks that Halle Berry’s star turn (of sorts) in Die Another Day is more remembered than Pike’s brilliance…it also sucks that no one seems to remember that she was good in Pride & Prejudice and more than just good in An Education. I’m casting her to make up for it…

I’ll be back on line as per usual by Saturday…

    • Heather says:

Niiiiiiiiiiice pick Andrew. I never liked Halle in Die Another Day. She was beautiful sure, but forgettable. Her acting was stiff, and her chemistry with Brosnan was nonexistent which I don’t get, because how can ANYBODY NOT have chemistry with Pierce Brosnan? And so………..I agree with you in this long winded comment.

  32. Clarabela says:

@Joel: You picked my favorite Bond (don’t hate) I love Pierce. I am glad he made the cut.

  33. Matthew Perry! Since I’ve seen him in Friends I knew I wanted to work with him. He has a way to deliver jokes like no else. I think he can be a very actor if taken seriously!

  34. Fitz says:

God this past week has been busy packing, flying, moving on campus. Sorry about the delay (again). My final pick is Christina Hendricks.

  35. ACPG says:

With my seventh round pick, I’ll take Annette Bening…she’s a great actress who can play a character nobody really likes well (see American Beauty)…

  36. Neon Bodeaux says:

Now is time to pick my director. My director has to be a visionary, someone who no matter how dark it gets they are always moving forward in search of the light at the end of the tunnel. And no matter what the end result is they will swear by their life as well as by the life of their children that they have made a GREAT MOVIE! So without further ado my Director is none other than…Claudio Fragasso thats right the same visionary that brought us such films as Troll 2 and…??????
