  1. I’m as pleased as can be! Loving it.

Ben – Your rolling the dice with some stubborn egos, but damn they are talented. I’m very curious who your next pick will be!

Clara – I’m very intrigued by your J.J. Abram’s romantic dramedy! I’m trying to wrap my head around it. I’ll love to see how it pans out!

Heather – Though my jealousy over you drafting Fincher before me is immense… I must say that teaming him and Viggo is ingenious. Touché. :D

Castor – Those pictures of Bale and McAdam’s looks like she’s in for a world of hurt. If you lay a finger on her, I swear to goodness!!!! … though I must admit that Tarantino looks like a sex offender above Moretz…

This is looking like a great draft so far! *round of applause* for everyone and Castor & Red for hosting this!

  2. Chris says:

I love this – such a great idea and I can’t wait for our drafts to start taking a bit more shape.

Gonna be really interesting to hear everyone’s reasons for their picks too :D

    • Castor says:

Glad to hear you are having fun! Definitely interesting to watch how people are casting their movies. Will they keep stacking A-listers or build around 1 or 2 big names? Personally, I do think that you can get too many big names so I will try to build around my 2 (or maybe 3) leads but the temptations to grab more is certainly there.

  3. Joel Burman says:

There are some great combos in the making…

  4. Anna says:

So what are the main ideas for your movies? Since my director’s Scorsese, my movie’ll be pertaining to crime. And that’s all I’m gonna say…for now. ;)

  5. Castor says:

So far, 12 actresses, and 1 female director have been picked compared to 50 actors and male director. Just a reminder that by rule you need at least 2 actresses on your roster.

  6. Ben says:

I agree, some of these are really intriguing.

Special props to Heather for putting Fincher and Viggo together. I didn’t realize how badly I’ve wanted to see that combo until just now.

And I already have the rest of my cast lined up! Unfortunately, I think that’s only made me more paranoid about not getting them. I liked it better when I had no idea where I was going. :P

  7. Hey! We should give out awards for the pictures at the end. Is there any way to create some sort of small banner like the LAMMY Awards? We could have a limited number of categories like Best Picture, Best Ensemble, etc. so on so forth. Yea? Nay?

  8. Joel Burman says:

Red Beard, Anna and Heather have sóme great trios! I’d easily buy tickets to see these movies based on the above only.

  9. The nice thing is I’ve been writing screenplays for years trying to get them sent in but to no avail. With this draft I can finally put actors and actresses I want together with a great director to bring one of my best screenplays to life.

And so far everything has been going to plan. While it may not have the most cohesive or appealing cast (to some) I really think once you put the script together along side Nolan, this film can’t fail.

  10. ACPG says:

well, I’m jumping into this a little late, but i have a couple ideas that are both still looking good

if i go with the route that’d probably be a little harder, i might have some picks that overlap with a few of the other “producers”

    • Castor says:

Nice picks ACPG, looks like you got your leading lady and possibly your lead man (?)

      • ACPG says:

yes i think so, he was pretty much the key to this idea

the only thing that could change that is if one of my favorite actors looks like he’s going to go undrafted…then i’d make room for him, budget be damned

  11. Heather says:

So far I’m really loving Kai’s, but Marc’s is a really strong cast that looks like it could be magic together in the right film.

This Guy is making one hell of a cast. Those two actors are perfect for Tarantino.

And CS picking Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp together is insanity especially throwing Julianne Moore into the mix.

Neon has Eastwood, Walken, and Nic Cage. It’s not going to be a quiet flick, that’s for sure!

    • Castor says:

I like yours the most so far! Fincher, Mortensen and Winslet in the same movie, that’s like a dream come true! Can I be like an extra in this production???

I also like Anna and Neon’s. Walken and Cage together, that should be a heck of an overacted movie! Maybe add Al Pacino to make it even more over the top lol…Looking forward to see who everyone puts around their first 3 or 4 picks.

As for me… I have been waiting nearly 2 rounds without a pick!!!!! In the meanwhile, I’m starting to get some inspiration on what I want to do with my movie and the broader themes I want in it: Escape (being on the run), crime, focus on only two or three characters. Inspiration is starting to hit me muahahha

    • Clarabela says:

I would love to see a movie with Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp together. Both of them enjoy playing against the ‘pretty boy’ type.

  12. Anna says:

Julian over at Movie and Other Things… would love to see Red’s movie. Mainly because it features RDJ and Marion Cotillard, his two favorite actors.

  13. Anna says:

That’s funny, Kai. I find it ironic that you cast Jeremy Renner in a movie with James Cameron as the director.

  14. Clarabela says:

There are some really interesting casting choices here.

@travis: I would love to see a Christopher Nolan film with Anne Hathaway and 3 cute guys. Are you sure you are not making a chick flick?

@Peter: Changing to Lass Hallestrom is a good choice.

@CS: You have Johnny Depp, Don Cheadle and Brad Pitt. I can’t wait to see who you pick for director.

    • I’m pretty sure I’m not but I am making a film that appeals to both men and women (looks wise) and that will be enjoyed by all

      • Anna says:

I dunno. The fact you got Ryan Reynolds AND Bradley Cooper makes your project sound more like a chick flick.

        • Except Ryan Reynolds is a detective with a coke problem and Bradley Cooper is an insane crime boss with a thirst for violence…

          • Anna says:

And Anne Hathaway and Donnie Wahlberg will be playing…?

          • Donnie is a grizzled detective who has seen and done it all. His partner is Ryan Reynolds, a cocky, brash cop who has a history with drug problems. The chief (yet to be cast) thinks that Donnie will set him straight and he reluctantly agrees.

Donnie’s character has also been after two criminals for the longest time. One is an insane crime boss (Cooper), who gets away with his crimes because of his charm, charisma, good looks and paying off almost every cop. The other is a black widow (Anne Hathaway), who looks and acts sweet on the outside but has ulterior motives. She’s escaped Donnie’s grasps for years but now Donnie has learned that she has hooked up with Cooper’s character.

He’s also learned from a snitch (yet to be cast) that a female assassin (yet to be cast) has been hired to take out Cooper and his gang as well as Hathaway by a rival big boss (yet to be cast)

But why does Donnie want to stop both women from taking Cooper out? Well Donnie’s brother (yet to be cast) is his right hand man and he doesn’t want him getting hurt. And Donnie wants to take Cooper down personally.

So it’s a very shades of grey film….that work?

          • Anna says:

Damn. That sounds more like an Aronofsky picture than a Nolan picture. Impressive nonetheless.

          • Thanks. I wrote the screenplay about a year ago and putting faces to it will and has been nice.

I picked Nolan because of films like Batman Begins and The Dark Knight but mostly because of Insomnia. He does great with dark, gritty, realistic films that deal with shades of grey. I think this one will be good with him on board.

          • Anna says:

Mine looks pale in comparison. :/

          • Like it’s more depressing? I’d be interested to hear what you had in mind for your film…so far

          • Anna says:

Nah, I mean compared to your movie, mine is a lot lighter. Plus, I rather keep the details secret until I get my final two actors.

          • I just like darker films and I like giving actors the opportunity to be in a film that is sort of the opposite that they’re used to…for the most part.

Good idea on being tight lipped.. But I am interested in hearing what your film IS about ONCE you’ve made your choices. I love your cast so far.

          • Anna says:

I’m starting to feel like Christopher Nolan with keeping the details secret.

          • Gives you the element of surprise than.

  15. Anna says:

Out of the casts so far, which one looks the most promising?

    • Clarabela says:

I am wondering how Castor will keep those 2 hot-headed actors (Crowe & Bale) under control?

      • Anna says:

They’ve worked together before. I didn’t hear anything about them going bat shit crazy on each other.

        • Clarabela says:

True. Maybe their tempers cancel each other out.

        • rtm says:

Have you seen their interviews for 3:10 to Yuma? They look like they’ve been BFFs for years, they’re funny together, even poking fun at Bale when he confessed someone mistook him for Christian Slater!! I’d LOVE to see ‘em work together again.

          • Castor says:

Some of the most difficult actors to work with are some you may never hear about “throwing tantrums”: Marlon Brando, Joan Crawford, Tommy Lee Jones, or Dustin Hoffman in his prime were notorious for being very stubborn and difficult to work with. More recently, people like Ed Norton, Ryan Gosling and Katherine Heigl are known for being difficult on set. For example with Heigl, you can see that she never has the same co-stars or even main supporting actors in her movie twice.

  16. I’m digging the draft, and am glad that my picks haven’t been taken (although I doubt anyone was thinking Dinklage or Glover when the game started). Coming up with a scenario is hard, but with the addition of The Rock, I think I may have an idea. Or not. Or MAYBE. Probably not. BUT JUST MAYBE.

  17. Clarabela says:

I have the title and tagline for my film. And a song…
    Unexpected Song
..,because you never know where you’ll find true love

This is a link to the song (sung by Izina Menzel): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9V43H3NxuVk Of, course in my movie Hugh will sing the title song.

  18. Ben says:

Kai… I may not be much of a fan of James Cameron at all (and by “not much of a fan”, I mean I hate him), but by putting Joseph Gordon Levitt, Matt Damon, and Jeremy Renner into the same film.. I don’t care if your next pick is Seth Rogen, I think you’ve already made the most badass movie ever. Period.

  19. Castor says:

The best picks of the 5th round for me (aside from my own lol) are:
Laura Linney (Red) and Ben Foster (Ben). I also like CS getting Zooey. Those 3, I definitely considered earlier but ended up not taking for one reason or another.

Who do you think got the best picks of the 5th round?

    • rtm says:

No love for my pick, Castor? :( I have to iron some things out and draw a big chart to figure out the casting details, but my movie will be a romantic crime thriller that has to do with long lost love and a powerful family-owned empire corporation doing very bad things.

      • Castor says:

Love your cast. A nice mix of future legends and up and coming young actors! Timothy Dalton being already a legend so I don’t even need to mention him :)

Awesome to hear about your movie Ruth, I will look forward to read more about it. My movie will be a gangster movie with a romance at its center. It will be set during the Great Depression (when else right?). Christian Bale will play an ex-mobsters who returns to his hometown and tries to forget about his past. There he will meet a mysterious woman who is fleeing the same mobsters he used to run with.

        • Anna says:

Not to downsize your hopes, but the plot sounds a little bit like Carlito’s Way. Also, you could have the movie set in the 1940s (hey, The Godfather was).

          • Castor says:

Don’t worry Anna. I can see how it could remind you of Carlito’s way but it will be quite different in feel, tone, and perspective. 99% of new plots sound like the plot of another movie ;) For example, Ruth’s brief description above could also remind a bit of Carlito’s Way with Carlito reuniting with his former flame Gail in a mobster setting

First of all, most of the movie will take place in a rural setting. Bale’s character will have no interest or attraction whatsoever in being a mobster again unlike Carlito. Also, it will be much more character driven than plot based and will focus almost solely on my two main characters point of view. A lot more contemplative with moments building upon moments for major parts of the movie.

          • Yeah I’m liking your cast Castor and if you’re going with a prohibition era kind of crime drama like that I know I’d see it.

          • Castor says:

Yes!!!!! Total box office intake so far: $7!!!!!

          • rtm says:

It’s inevitable that our plot might share similarities with an existing movie, but I agree with Castor, the casting, period and obviously the script can make a familiar story look and feel entirely different.

        • Joel Burman says:

Sounds like a take on the wild bunch? =)

          • Castor says:

Not really, you would change your mind once you realize that Christian Bale is actually a time traveler who is seeking to prevent the extinction of humanity by saving Rachel McAdams, the grandmother of humanity’s savior. Russell Crowe is a space invader with a cybernetic suit that makes him like a human and he is here to assassinate her. But then a twist is that this is all a dream inside the dream of Mark Ruffalo who received Inception from Christian Bale’s real character who is trying to get Ruffalo to write the script for the movie Terminator!

So Joel, no this is not a take on the Wild Bunch!

          • Joel Burman says:

Thats actually a film I’d pay for to see. Like a cross between Being John Malkovich and Last Action Hero.

  20. I’m liking all the plot outlines so far.

  21. Anna says:

Castor, I’m impressed by the outcome of this. To think you didn’t get any LAMMYs this year. You sure as hell will next year.

  22. Marc says:

Really liking the cast of This Guy. Impressive. Most impressive:)

Richard, man your cast is talented and rather whimsical. Looking forward to hearing the story.

And Ruth, my, my, my, I would see your movie 3 times without even needing to know what the plot was!!

Also you too Castor, pulling out the major league big guns:P

    • rtm says:

Why thank you Marc… but hey, look at you. Strong, Laurent, Honsou, and Val Kilmer?! WOW talk about awesomely-eclectic. I’d see movies with these cast ten times over than those Ocean-movies type with some overrated movie stars!

    • Castor says:

Hehe thanks Marc. Just a bunch of people that are my favorites to watch on screen. It makes it easier to try to come up with something as far as pitching a movie :)

    • Thanks dude! (Just to clarify, Richard Jenkins is not in my cast, just a glitch in the matrix.) I ended up being really excited with my cast as well, though I think I have one or two more actors to pick in the supplemental draft..

Castor – Do I have to participate in all three rounds of the supplemental draft, or can I just choose one and be out???

  23. Clarabela says:

Wow. After the 6th & 7th round picks, I am super impressed by the cast of Travis, CS, Peter. Fitz and Andrew. I can’t wait to see their movie pitches. It will be a very busy weekend in movie blogger land.

  24. Joel Burman says:

I really had the wrong approach for this. I went with my dream franchise but didin’t think my strategy through.

First Misstake: Jon Turteltaub as everyone who has been taunting me for It I should have waited to pick him in the 7th round since it seem like no one in ever would considering him eventhough him being a great “commercial” director and I really enjoy several of his films.

2nd Misstake: Picking Tim Robbins based on a videogame character created as a replica of him was a real nostalgic misstake. I’m even having a hard time fitting him in this movie at all. I’d rather have his main plot in the sequel but throwing him in as a cameo in the first one seem awkard since he is not really the alfa male for that kind of Mission. (I’ll give you the background on his character later its good but I should have gone with another actor for the part)

Third Misstake: Jason Isaacs – I really like the guy but he made it really hard to pick other guys since most of the regular male stars has the same kind of attributes as him and I dont wanna use him for the bad guy role, it would be a waste since the bad guy sits on a throne in their lair for the most of the film.

4th Misstake: Lena Olin – I really did a spontaneous choice with her and my intention was to have her as a really mean agent on the good side. But when thinking rhrough my cast after choosing her I realized that I have to use her as villain instead of picking a person for it since its a small role.

I really do think that some of these mistakes are similar to what real big time producers do at least it feels like that on these typical ensemble blockbusters. They must really be thought trough to work. I’m really glad for Amy and SMG they would totally rock together.

  25. At what point do we start incorporating this into our own sites?

    • Anna says:

It’s mentioned on the top of the Round 7 page.

    • Castor says:

You can start as soon as the supplemental draft is over. I will an individualized page for each participant (you can see the beginning of it in the top menu) with a table of all your picks. If you have wordpress (self-hosted), I will then be able to send you your table.

      • rtm says:

Awesome! I could definitely use that table, Castor.

Man, I’ve been mulling over the plot of my movie so much it’s hard to concentrate on work, darn you! :D I realize I need two more people, one is crucial to the story. It’s predictable casting but I have a very good reason [REALLY!] to include him due to his close resemblance to one of the actors I’ve already cast.

  26. Anna says:

Personally I want to hear why you chose the director/actors you wanted. I’ll started:

Martin Scorsese: He’s one of the best directors still working. ‘Nuff said.

Meryl Streep: I wanted to start my actor choices with one of the best. And that would be Meryl Streep.

Sean Penn: When I read that he was considered for the role of Henry Hill in Goodfellas, I was thinking, Boy, THAT would’ve been a different movie. And seeing how he could handle intense roles (Dead Man Walking, Mystic River), he seemed right for the part.

Marisa Tomei: I wanted to get Julianne Moore for this part, but then CS got her. I had to find another actress around the same age, and Tomei came up. And having seen her work in Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead and The Wrestler, I was sold.

Ralph Fiennes: Like what I said when I picked him, I wanted someone who could be charming and chilling flawlessly. Fiennes’ Amon Goeth from Schindler’s List is just that. And plus the role I have in mind for him is a little similar to that of his role in In Bruges (minus the countless f-bombs, that is).

Stanley Tucci: He was actually Fiennes’ substitute if he was picked before my turn. But I realized I wanted to get an actor who would be fitting for this part. And that’s where Tucci came in.

Emile Hirsch: He is honestly one of the best rising actors in Hollywood. Plus, I would so pay to see him in a Scorsese flick.

Jake Gyllenhaal: Gyllenhaal has recently become a favorite actor of mine. Like what I said about Hirsch, I would so pay to see him in a Scorsese flick.

Peter Sarsgaard: Can you believe that this man doesn’t have an Oscar nomination to his name yet? I really liked his work in An Education, Kinsey, Jarhead and Boys Don’t Cry. And who knows what he would do in a movie like this one?
