Open Bar – August 5, 2010

Starting today and from every weekend on, a post like this will be published simply to open up the floor for discussion about anything and everything between readers of Anomalous Material. I have been thinking of ways to increase interactions between readers of the blog and I think this will be a good start. You are probably wondering what this is all about so let me briefly explain:

  • Talk about anything you want
  • Does it have to be related to movies? Not necessarily :) It can be as on-topic (movie) or off-topic as you wish
  • The post itself may contain some potential things to talk about but by no means, do you have to talk about those
  • Play nice, be respectful of each other
  • Any ideas for the Open Bar?

Now that I introduced the concept of the open bar, let me take care of some unfinished business:

  • Just a heads-up for Ripley that I haven’t forgotten about you, I am currently working on your Fourth wall/Meta breaking post you requested. Expect it sometime next week
  • Same for Kai and your recent meme tag
  • TJ, Darren and Dan, you have yet to choose your prize for winning the commenting contest. Darren, you have yet to contact us so we can send you your Casino Royale poster
  • Thanks to all of you who participated in the 31DBBB project this week, we will be back to work on Monday!
  • The Greatest Comedy Tournament will resume on Monday. Make sure to vote in the sidebar between Groundhog Day and The 40-Yr Old Virgin, it’s been incredibly close throughout and can’t be called at this point
  • HSX: I know I should be giving you an update… How’s everyone doing?
  • Red should be back very soon. In the meanwhile, he has sent me a few pictures of his exploits:

  1. Okay then, Red…your skin colour differs between your face and your hands but that’s okay.

What do you say at an Open Bar? I don’t drink (lame joke: I know)

I have to ask though; America’s Sweehearts…am I the only one who hates America’s Sweehearts? In retrospect I don’t know why I didn’t give it an F instead of a D-…there’s nothing about it I can remember liking.

  2. This is a really cool idea. I think discussion is important.

As for my prize I’ll do the blog review. I’m a big boy, I can take it lol.

My questions come after my viewing of The Other Guys and my constant television watching (I’ve thought about question 1 for a discussion on my blog but I’d throw out the idea here):

    1. Why are there so many law enforcement based television shows (CSI, NCIS, Law and Order, Rookie Blue ect)?

    2. How much Will Farrel is too much Will Farrel and is he losing steam?

    3. Do buddy cop films still work?

    • Joel Burman says:

      1. They are popular, so everyone looks at CSI and says we need our own! Then they develop it and it continues forever like that.

      2. He is always to much I think he is way overrated. Here’s a rant of mine on Talladega Nights: http://jodokast.wordpress.com/2010/05/29/talladega-nights-ballad-of-ricky-bobby-flams-ferrell-burnar-loss/

      3. Yes if they have good chemistry! But I do think they do way to few with female couplings. They should get on that Cagney and Lacey feature remake!

      • 1. Yeah I’ve noticed that. I just wish that there were more original ideas. Because at some point, I end up going “This is the such and such episode” like it’s becoming predictable. It’s becoming the chick flicks of television series.

        2. That’s a good rant. I actually like Farrel but I agree that he is overrated and overused

        3. I wish they’d do more female combos. Rizzoli and Isles is teaching me that female combos can be really good so maybe that will translate to film.

      • Joel Burman says:

        1. Its toatally true their structure has both negative and positive sides.

        +
        1. Its really easy to just jump in and catch an episode if its on.
        2. Its crime!!!

        -
        1. The cases can feel quite similar from time to time
        2. These CSI versions and their clones are seldom as good as other TV on character development due to their structure and I think its connected with the first +1 (it cant have happened that much because it gets confusing if you miss episodes)
        3. Lack of Season Main Arch or not clearly defined this is of course also connected to the point above.

A great complement/alternative to these kind of series are Veronica Mars it was really briliantly executed and was canceled way to early.

        2. Thanxs! I love a good rant and Will often does that to me. I probably gonna do a piece on stepbrothers that I haven’t seen yet since its the same director.

        3. I fint it strange that leading parts still are so stereotypical cast. This is definitively a point to be made about buddy cops. I loved the two girls on the Miami Vice tv-series. They were great characters way before their time!

      • 1. Yeah Crime really is appealing to a lot of people. Maybe that’s why Cops has been on the air so long. I’m liking though shows like The Good Guys, Castle, and Rizzoli and Isles because they are going out of the usual mode and being less procedural. Although Rookie Blue has grown on me. It’s like Grey’s Anatomy with cops.

        2. Yeah if you didn’t like Talladega than you will HATE Step Brothers…and probably the Other Guys as well.

3.Yeah I think we need fresh non stereotypical blood out there in the buddy cop genre.

    • Any amount of Will Ferrell is too much, really.

Those crimes shows have just got to STOP. Or at least pace themselves. The appeal is obvious, but look at something like The Closer – a brilliant show. It’s not really about the crime, though it’s considered a crime procedural. The characters are real and there’s continuity, something that so many OTHER shows seem to be lacking.

      • He can be okay in small doses but you have to be in the mood for him.

I just wish there weren’t so many. Have the TNT cop shows since they are the best, the NCIS series since its military based and then maybe one CSI and one Law and Order esque series. Throw out the other ones.

It’s like how doctor shows used to be. They are everywhere and too many can really hurt the chances for original television to be made.

      • Darren says:

Yep. Ferrell needs either calm down or diversify. I know Stranger Than Fiction wasn’t great, but get back out there into drama, man!

      • rtm says:

I’m with Andrew, but it just might be the case of overexposure. I don’t mind him in more serious roles, i.e. Stranger than Fiction, but he probably makes tons more $$$ in slapstick stuff so that’s what he does more of. I still check out The Other Guys though, him and Wahlberg look like a hoot. I love that silly commercial in front of Inception where they’re both hanging on a harness and bumping into each other. LMAO!

        • Yeah I’m with Darren and you on that one. He probably DOES make more money with comedies and its his roots so that’s what he’s good at but I do wish he’d do serious roles or roles that weren’t just over the top. Or take a few years off. Any of those would be good.

    • Heather says:

People like mysteries. There are always a handful of hospital dramas on the tele too.

I’ve worried about Ferrel for awhile now, and am not sure what new he has to offer as a lead.

Buddy Cops as cheap remakes do not work. Some original capacity may make it work.

      • Yeah I understand the mystery element. I mean I don’t think they should be taken off the air I just couldn’t understand why there are so many. I guess its easy for people. They know doctors, they know cops, they know this kind of stuff.

Yeah Farrel has me a little worried that he’s wearing himself thin.

We need a new duo…something bigger and better than we’ve ever seen!

      • Kaiderman says:

The Human Torch needs a bank loan!

        • Colleeng says:

It’s sort of like Jim Carrey. I think he’s a great dramatic actor, but the ticket buying audience never wants to see it. I love Will Ferrell and this new movie looks pretty good. It’s to the point though where just because he’s in it doesn’t mean I’m going. He’s made a lot of crap recently, so I’m selective. I have Stranger Than Fiction on my DVR, is it worth watching? I keep meaning to, I just haven’t found the time.

          • Joel Burman says:

I understand your point but I think they are miles apart in both comedy and dramatic acting. Jim being the better one.
I actually didin’t like Stranger than Fiction that much it kind of felt like he was trying do an academy award run with it! Those are never good when it gets obvious.

          • Red says:

I loved Stranger Than Fiction. Ferrell doesn’t go overboard at all, and he has surprisingly good chemistry with Maggie G, who is near perfect in it.

          • Kaiderman says:

Yeah… that and Secretary are the only 2 movies where I thought Maggie G. was attractive.

          • I do love Maggie G…and Carey is a much better serious actor. It’s easier to take him seriously while with Farrel its really hard.

  3. Kaiderman says:

I’ll have a jack and coke and am gonna go head and order a Miller Lite in a plastic bottle for Heather because she will be here soon enough.
As far as HSX, I am in 1rst place, bitches! haha I’m up about 1.8 million.
Like this idea. Say, man, can I turn on the radeeyo!

  4. Kaiderman says:

Oh, and I don’t know how the retweets and all that work but Heather and I have decided to win the straight up comments this month so BACK OFF, PEOPLE! haha

  5. Joel Burman says:

So what are everyone up for this weekend?

I am going to the countryside on a wedding (my girlfriends sister). Other than that I actually might work on my blog since I have been really inspired by this blog improvement session and I am gonna change a whole lot to make it more niched.

  6. Fitz says:

Well since it is Open Bar… I’m turning 21 on the 10th and would like to get some suggestions for my first drink. Anyone have a good one?

  7. Kaiderman says:

I have a question for all you blogspot/ blogger people. Is there a way to get e-mails when there are responses to posts you have left comments on. WordPress has it. I hate having to remember which blogspot sites and posts I visited.

  8. Yeah it tends to be a pretty big bummer. And I rarely ever get notice when I do get comments on my site so when people comment I could go days without ever realizing it. One of the many downfalls of ol’ blogger.

  9. Ripley says:

Who else really hates fucking CSI franchise? Like, who gave the guys who collect dubious fingerprints such an ego?

Also, let’s list all the plotholes of Inception.

  10. As you could see from my earlier posts I am getting tired of seeing this giant flux of cop shows but I don’t hate CSI. I love Vegas cause it’s the original and the original is usually the best. I love Miami mostly for Horatio’s one liners and I don’t like New York. Gary Sinese wasted.

If I could list the plotholes I would. Where’s a good place to start?

    • I love the original, well used to. Now it’s just there. Hate Miami and tolerate New York.

      • Yeah Miami isn’t really that good at all, except for the one liners. Honestly I look at it as the B-Movie equivalent of the series. CSI is the A list title, New York is the B List and Miami is the red headed step child who amuses you on a juvenile level.

You can thank Jim Carey for that one (the love of Miami)

  11. Castor says:

HOLY MOLLY! I leave you alone for a few hours and you go berserk on me! ;)

  12. Castor says:

Shameful admission: I thought all day that today was Friday, hence why the Open bar was published on a Thursday. Next week, it will be on Friday (the real one).

It’s weird because I keep retelling myself that today is Thursday but I keep spacing out, thinking it’s Friday. No, no I’m not drunk… ;)

  13. Castor says:

I need to increase the thread levels, this is getting tough to read after 20 post in reply to the same person.

  14. Heather says:

    I love David Bowie.

  15. Heather says:

What did the five fingers say to the face?

  16. Castor says:

Damn, TJ and Kai have more comments in 5 days than the winners of last month contest!!!

  17. Adam says:

    …Russell Crowe…

  18. Ronan says:

Haha You know when you read someone and then you have this image of them in your head?… That is exactly how I pictured Red… it’s uncanny ;-)

  19. Peter says:

    Advice, anyone?!

My site is on WordPress — and I want to make it much more appealing, graphic-wise (like so many of you have, and I am impressed with). Mine is simple and basic…standard Wordpres theme.

is there a good book to pick to read up on how to make WordPress nicer to look at and do more things on? I am not a techie at all, so the easier to understand, the better. Like WordPress for Dummies or something?

    Much thanks!

    • Castor says:

As I told you before, you would need to make the move from WordPress.com to WordPress.org (self-hosted) to be able to have more customization ability. You are really quite restrained with those standard WordPress issue but there isn’t much you can do at this point.

    • Heather says:

Castor is right about that if you want more selection with templates and whatnot, but even being tricky with html’s can really make your site more fancy. Until last year I had not gotten a self hosted and I managed to do a lot with mine. But a self hosted you can add so many fun plugin’s and just download download download!

    • Colleeng says:

There is a WordPress for Dummies book, I checked it out of the library. I was thinking about switching from Google to WordPress. All this computer stuff is kicking my ass. I’m having a hard time just commenting and stuff on all these sites. Like I just registered here Castor, and it won’t let me select an Avatar, I can’t even click into it, it does nothing. Then I logged in with Facebook and it wouldn’t let me log in again so I’m still here as a guest. I spend so much time trying to figure all this kind of stuff out that I get frustrated and don’t want to use the computer the rest of the night! Urrgg!

      • Castor says:

To select a gravatar, you will need to go to http://en.gravatar.com/

Everyone who doesn’t have a gravatar should do that really as it takes 30 seconds to get it set up. Simply type in the email address you use to comment here and your avatar will follow you everywhere.

        • Colleeng says:

I didn’t go to Gravatar cuz I was wondering if it lets you select your own custom (like a photo). I’m into so many different things, I don’t think one pic will work for all the different places I go to. It’s easier to just use my mug.

  20. Ripley says:

Has anyone read Chronic City? Becausde if you have, I need to geek out about what the hell hapened at the end.

  21. Castor says:

ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED? IS THIS WHY YOU ARE HERE?Russell Crowe - Maximus

  22. Anna says:

Something tells me this’ll become a running feature.

  23. Red says:

Good heavens. As if I didn’t have enough to catch up to already.

  24. Kaiderman says:

I have a new drink I’d like to introduce to the bar. It’s called Recipe for Disaster. You mix one part Open Discussion Forum with two parts Comment Contest. Stir and enjoy!

  25. Ripley says:

Holy shit, I’m not in Florida anymore!
