31-Day Movie Meme: Red + Castor All-in-One-Day Edition
Just about everyone in the movie blogging community has participated in this 31-day movie meme so we felt we had to do our part as well. This was supposed to take place over 31 days with one post per day but as you probably know, we had a lot on our plate. Nevertheless, here is our compact version of the meme:
DAY 1: A SEQUEL THAT SHOULDN’T HAVE BEEN MADE
Red: New Moon and Eclipse, and the following two movies. As if one Twilight movie wasn’t bad enough, we get to have 5!
Castor: There is so many sequels that should never have been made and everyone has already listed the obvious ones like The Godfather III or Batman and Robin so I will go with the incredibly terrible Legally Blonde 2.
DAY 2: A MOVIE MORE PEOPLE SHOULD SEE
Red: La Vie en Rose.
Castor: I’m going to go with the recent war documentary Restrepo.
DAY 3: FAVORITE OSCAR-NOMINATED MOVIE FROM THE MOST RECENT BALLOT
Red: While it didn’t get a Best Pic nomination, I’ll go with with The White Ribbon.
Castor: Inglourious Basterds. I still can’t believe it did not even get best original screenplay!!
DAY 4: A MOVIE THAT MAKES YOU LAUGH EVERY TIME
Red: Anchorman. Oh so quotable.
Castor: Step Brothers. Not one of the greats but some of the scenes get me every time
DAY 5: A MOVIE YOU LOATHE
Red: Can I use Twilight again? No? Fine. Greenberg.
Castor: Napoleon Dynamite. Never understood the fascination with that (horrendous) movie.
DAY 6: A MOVIE THAT MAKES YOU CRY EVERY TIME
Red: My Girl. “He can’t see without his glasses!” Gets me every time.
Castor: I’m relatively easily moved but few movies actually do push me as far as crying. For the few that do, the effect just wears off progressively after subsequent viewings even when it’s excellently acted. Just because you want an answer, I will say Grave of the Fireflies.
DAY 7: LEAST FAVORITE MOVIE BY A FAVORITE ACTOR
Red: The Happening. I never thought I would see the day that I’d hate a Zooey movie.
Castor: A Beautiful Mind. Russell Crowe was very good but the movie was a total doozer. On the ladies side, Night at the Museum 2 was terrible even though Amy Adams was a highlight as always.
DAY 8: A MOVIE THAT SHOULD BE REQUIRED HIGH SCHOOL VIEWING
Red: 4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days. Quite possibly the best well made movie I’ve ever seen.
Castor: The Lives of Others, a masterpiece that would also bring some European history in the classroom.
DAY 9: BEST SCENE EVER
Red: The March of the Rohirrim from The Return of the King. Shivers down my spine every time.
Castor: The heist in Michael Mann’s Heat. You know what I’m talking about…
DAY 10: A MOVIE YOU NEVER EXPECTED TO LIKE BUT LOVED
Red: Remember Me. I figured it would be just another movie to get money out of Robert Pattinson, but turned out to be a pretty good movie. Didn’t LOVE the movie, but was still pretty good.
Castor: Lars and the Real Girl. I stayed away from this movie for a long time because of its weird and predictable (or so I thought) premises. Little did I know…
DAY 11: A MOVIE THAT DISAPPOINTED YOU
Red: Master and Commander. Seemed to be right up my alley, but was very bored very quick.
Castor: Predators. I just re-watched the original which is so awesome, why did the apple fall so far from the tree?
DAY 12: BEST SOUNDTRACK/BACKGROUND MUSIC IN A SCENE
Red:
Castor:
DAY 13: FAVORITE ANIMATED MOVIE
Red: Up
Castor: Spirited Away
DAY 14: FAVORITE FILM IN BLACK AND WHITE
Red: Damn, already used The White Ribbon….err… 8 1/2 (1963) then.
Castor: Les Diaboliques (1955)
DAY 15: BEST MUSICAL
Red: Already used Once, so I’ll go with Across the Universe.
Castor: Once, hands down.
DAY 16: YOUR GUILTY PLEASURE MOVIE
Red: The Bridge to Terabithia. Wonderful little kids film that I can watch over and over. Oh, and it has Zooey. (And I would like to say that Wedding Crashers is hardly a guilty pleasure. Be a bit bolder next time Castor!)
Castor: Wedding Crashers. EDIT: Ahaha Red, if you knew that I never fail to watch it every single time I stumble upon it on TV, then you might understand it becomes a bit of one! Ok, I will go with Mr. and Mrs. Smith as my guilty pleasure then.
DAY 17: FAVORITE SERIES OF RELATED MOVIES
Red: Excluding LoTR because it’s more like one big movie, I’ll go with Star Wars.
Castor: Indiana Jones even though the fourth one sucked
DAY 18: FAVORITE TITLE SEQUENCE
Red: (500) Days of Summer…great song, wonderful comparisons of the childhoods of the main characters.
Castor: Not a very good movie but The Lord of War has a great intro with its “Life of a bullet”
DAY 19: BEST MOVIE CAST
Red: The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Brad Pitt, Mary-Louise Parker, Casey Affleck, Sam Rockwell, Jeremy Renner, Sam Shepard, Paul Schneider, Garret Dillahunt, Ted Levine, Zooey Deschanel
Castor: Glengarry Glen Ross with Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, Ed Harris, Alec Baldwin, Alan Arkin, Kevin Spacey. ‘Nuff said.
DAY 20: FAVORITE KISS
Red: Easily the one from Godfather II. “You broke my heart”.
Castor: I will just go with a popular one, Allie Hamilton and Noah Calhoun in The Notebook. It’s built up for quite some time before it happens and it’s in the rain. And Red, you so wimped out on that one, cheater!
DAY 21: FAVORITE ROMANTIC COUPLE
Red: It’s an odd one, but Will Farrell and Maggie Gyllenhaal in Stranger Than Fiction.
Castor: Two birds with one stone, The Notebook again. I’m a simpleton, forgive me!
DAY 22: FAVORITE FINAL SCENE/LINE
Red: Inglourious Basterds. “I do believe this is my masterpiece”.
Castor: Gladiator, I just love the final song.
DAY 23: BEST EXPLOSION/ACTION SEQUENCE
Red: The Battle at Helm’s Deep in The Two Towers.
Castor: The Omaha Beach sequence in Saving Private Ryan. Seriously, it’s not even fair.
DAY 24: QUOTE YOU USE MOST OFTEN
Red: “Littering and….littering and…..littering and…” from Super Troopers.
Castor: “I see dead people” from The Sixth Sense.
DAY 25: A MOVIE YOU PLAN ON WATCHING
Red: That’s already released? The Thin Red Line is on Netflix Instant Play, so I’ll give that a go.
Castor: What kind of question is this? There is 5,491 movies I plan to watch! Off the top of my head, Chungking Express (1994).
DAY 26: FREAKISHLY WEIRD MOVIE ENDING
Red: Memento.
Castor: Nothing is going to beat Mulholland Dr. in that category.
DAY 27: BEST VILLAIN
Red: Zorg from The Fifth Element.
Castor: The unpredictably violent Lil’ Ze in City of God.
DAY 28: MOST OVER-HYPED MOVIE
Red: Revolutionary Road. Just an absolute bore.
Castor: Avatar. What was that all about?
DAY 29: MOVIE YOU HAVE WATCHED MORE THAN TEN TIMES
Red: Countless number of movies, but I’d say that Tommy Boy is probably the most watched.
Castor: I have seen a lot of movies more than 10 times. Saving Private Ryan is up there as most watched.
DAY 30: SADDEST DEATH SCENE
Red: Mufasa dying in The Lion King.
Castor: Saddest? If you mean making me sob like a dumbass, the old couple at the end of The Notebook takes the crown. Also John Coffey dying at the end of The Green Mile got me pretty good too.
DAY 31: SCENE THAT MADE YOU STAND UP AND CHEER
Red: um….can’t really say this has happened, but I suppose when Luke blows up the Death Star.
Castor: When Russell Crowe turns his back to Joaquin Phoenix and finally reveals who he is in Gladiator.
Finally done! Hope we didn’t bore you too much with this. Have any comments? Good picks, bad picks? Let us know in the comments!

LOL!
Castor, you cried in The Notebook? That’s brave of you to admit online xD – I’ll do this… later, when I have some free time.
Ahaha well, it’s not that hard to admit once you did it once which I did in my review of the movie a while ago
Looking forward to your meme!
Nice feature, I am gonna do this one aswell!
Looking forward to read it
Nice post which covers all most favorite things and options for a Movie lover. Awesome idea castor. How can I join in this in Future..BTW for me ‘A MOVIE THAT MAKES YOU CRY EVERY TIME’ is ‘October Sky’. I won’t forgot this film in my life. Because its one of the best Inspirational movie for all of us…
You can go ahead and do it on your blog right now Mani
Castor, we have a lot of the same taste in movies! Red, the death of Mufasa always gets me. Gotta watch that again. Glad you guys did it all.
I was about to write the same thing!
When I get a moment I will try to do this as well on my blog.
Glad to hear that Jess, idawson
Truth be told, I haven’t seen that in ages. Gotta break out the old VHS sometime soon!
I picked Mufasa’s death on my meme, too, Red. Whoever doesn’t cry in that scene must be made of stone!
Awesome choices on lots of these!!! I have to do my own on the Lantern very soon because it’s too fun not to. LOVED White Ribbon. Napoleon Dynamite DOES blow and isn’t very funny. red, I love your favorite kiss. And Castor – you stole my Glengarry cast…totally sticking with that on mine (I think I wrote that in a post of mine a couplf of weeks ago)…nothing tops it. A Fun read!
Still have to see White Ribbon but Red gave it an A+ so I’m highly looking forward to it. And yes! Napoleon Dynamite was the most boring movie ever!
The kiss one was actually the last one that I filled out. I was at a complete blank, and then I think Godfather applied to another question, and then it hit me.
Step Brothers is shit but good i agree – ‘Im burying you!’
give Master and Commander another go, im telling you. i thought it was boring crap on first view too, but theres something very hypnotic about it second time round
good rundown guys
“Boats and hoes!”
Thanks, Ross. I might have to do that. The supporting cast even had me pretty excited about that movie, but I still lost all interst.
Am I the only one who thought Mary-Louise Parker was really bad in The Assassination[...]? No, not even bad. Just very, very miscast?
I kinda thought that the first few times that I watched it. But that was a hard role for anybody to do, since every time she appeared on screen she had to do a shock and awe reaction to things. But then again, that film was filled with terribly difficult roles, I still claim that the Jesse James role was maybe one of the five most difficult roles of the past decade, and Pitt delivered.
These are always fun to read – a bit of insight into the things bloggers don’t always talk about.
Of course having the double whammy of Wedding Crashers love, put on the back burner for my choosing it as most overy-hyped, makes me want to seek out new blogs to follow
. Add to that Step Brothers and Anchorman, and I foresee we shall not be spending many days exchanging comedy recommendations.
I was going to go Glengarry Glenn Ross for best cast, especially in terms of delivery, but for full cast, top to bottom, I felt Magnolia was the way to go. Especially considering the amount of under-appreciated talented actors there. Including John C. Reilly who I still wager has far greater drama films than any one of his comedies.
Mufasa dying, always a contender for saddest death. Definitely among the top 5 animated film deaths.
Ahaha Univarn, I knew our quadruple thumbs of approval on Wedding Crashers would get you riled up!
Well I tried to keep with recent movies on most of them, so Anchorman was the answer for that. Otherwise I would’ve put the likes of the Holy Grail.
Don’t try to go recent. Go old school! Putting them there encourages people to want to seek them out. You had a chance to create more Monty Python fans. I say boo!
Nice double feature from both of you. And I totally agree with Castor about Inglourious Basterds not winning this year’s Best Pic. Damn shame!
High five!
Not one for Twilight fans to read! Good stuff guys…there’s a few films mentioned I have to see now.
Damn, nice one. Wish I had thought of Glengarry Glen Ross for best cast (Baldwin is EPIC). At least Red and I agreed on best kiss.
BTW, it takes guts for a guy to admit they’ve cried from a chick flick.
Hi Castor, I thought you were going to put Leap Year as Least Fave Movie by Your Fave Actor
Oh I love that scene in HEAT as well, and that ‘My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius’ scene is one of my all time faves, too. Btw, is Once considered a musical?? Anyway, great idea to make this a duo edition, always a fun read, guys!
Ahah, well Leap Year certainly was a piece of dung as well and it came into consideration
So… is someone re-tweeting this to a Twilight fan? xD
Is it wrong of me to say that I own the Once OST, but not own the DVD? I will always remember that Oscar night when Glen didn’t let Marketa talk, and then Stewart let her speak. Awwwwwww
Hey guys Why don’t you add the title ‘Most Scariest film’ for both of you..Its pretty good for Horror movie fans..
Also for me ‘SCENE THAT MADE YOU STAND UP AND CHEER’ – October Sky ending scene, Where Homer’s Father Switch ON the Rocket button and claps it..Oh what a great experience for me. I feel more better and get some energy while I watch ‘October Sky’. Cheers…
Love The Godfather II as the favourite kiss! Great call. And the Glengarry Glen Ross cast! Why didn’t I think of that? Brilliant choice, Castor.
I was ecstatic to see someone you mention Lars and the Real Girl. I’ve been trying HARD to get friends to watch that. I know they’ll love it but they don’t believe me. They continue to stay away. I’ll point them here for further proof I’m right.
I agree with Red, The White Ribbon must’ve been one of the best movies nominated for an Oscar EVER. It’s a shame it lost and wasn’t rewarded more.
