  • My Fair Lady Remake with Carey Mulligan will not go in production soon (Worst Previews)

Now, during the Toronto Film Festival, we had the chance to speak to Mulligan and asked for an update. “It’s not happening this year,” she replied. “I’ve definitely spoken about it, and I would love to do it if it happens, but it’s just not happening right now.

She added: “I read the script and the script is incredible. Emma Thompson wrote it. It’s telling the story again, in another way and not trying to sort of copy anything and not trying to take away anything from that version of it. It’s just telling it in a new era to a new generation of people.

“It goes in such a different direction than a superhero movie usually goes,” Reynolds said over lunch recently at 101 Coffee Shop. “It’s a nasty piece of work. It’s just based in so much emotional filth, completely. It’s like ‘Barfly‘ if it were a superhero movie. It sort of treads into the world of an emotionally damaged person.  I always say that Deadpool is a guy in a highly militarized shame spiral…. It’s so different than the superhero movies to date, it departs so far from that.”

Even though I was pretty sure the Affleck-Phoenix I’m Still Here was a hoax I kind of wanted to see it without that having been let out of the bag. I think they should have kept that close to the chest for a while longer. Though of course when Phoenix (hopefully) goes back to acting normal soon it would be a dead giveaway.

  2. Heather says:

Not excited about Deadpool, and hopefully the My Fair Lady remake doesn’t ever come to pass. Leave my Audrey Hepburn alone dammit!

Can’t say I’m not giddy about The Irishman. I mean come on. I can’t help but get enthused about that.

    • rtm says:

I’m with you, Heather, that’s one of my beloved classics. But at the same time, if done respectfully, I think Carey Mulligan can do Eliza Doolittle justice.

      • Red says:

Oh, and even though I think Mulligan can pull off that role, the entire movie now just feels like Emma Thompson trying to back her previous statements of thinking Hepburn was overrated.

    • Red says:

While I can’t say that I’m excited to see Al Pacino attached to it at this point in his career, The Irishman will definitely be a opening weekend watch for me. The book that it’s based upon is still one of my all-time favorite reads, and it’ll be interesting too see if Scorsese feels forced to cut certain parts out.

    • Peter says:

Thank you, Heather!!! Agree with you 100% on My Fair Lady….a shame, but we really should not be surprised.

  3. Heather says:

And thanks for the Groovers link!

  4. Vanessa says:

Why would they make another My Fair Lady? I hate it when they try to re-make already perfect films! So useless!!!

  5. Fitz says:

Would really like to see The Irishman come to production with that cast intact. Pacino, Pesci, De Niro, holy crap what an ensemble.

  6. Kaiderman says:

Thanks for the link, my friend. I’ve been a bad blogger buddy lately cuz I’ve been so busy and am really behind on my reading and commenting but thanks for helping me get the word out for some really indie films!

  7. Ripley says:

Carey Mulligan should be in everything. I’m just saying.

  8. Danny King says:

Another quite disappointing news item which debuted on The Film Stage today is that PTA’s “There Will Be Blood” follow-up “The Master” – starring Philip Seymour Hoffman and Jeremy Renner – is being delayed. Based on the report, it seems as if it is more the fault of creative mishaps rather than financial ones. It’s a shame, but I’m at least glad PTA is taking the time to make sure he gets it right.

    • Fitz says:

PTA should take his time with the project because the source material needs to be tight. He won’t have a Daniel Day-Lewis around to elevate questionable lines.

  9. Red says:

I love the casting of Cohen as Freddie Mercury. Seems to be tailor made for him.

  10. Peter says:

Do we really need a remake of My Fair Lady? Is this necessary? Emma Thompson, what are you doing?? And the whole Casey Affleck flick is a complete turn-off. He’s terrible and admitting it’s a hoax is like giving us the middle finger before we even go to see it. I’ll save my money.
