  • Kim Ji-Woon to make his Hollywood debut by directing US action thriller The Last Stand (Latino Review)

Written by Andrew Knauer, the story, described as having shades of “Gone in 60 Seconds” and “High Noon,” features a Gumpert Apollo, a 200 mph race car used by drug smugglers, and it centers on a cartel leader that uses it to break out of a courthouse. As he speeds to the Mexican border, the only thing standing in his way is a border-town sheriff and his inexperienced staff.

Cobalt Neural 9

Part of the film takes place in the future all right — nearly a hundred from now. But its main story is told in Cloverfield-esque flashbacks by digital archeologists sorting through “found footage” from CNN and chips from old digital cameras from the U.S. occupation of Iraq. The heroes are indeed a gay American soldier named (with little irony) “Butch” and an Iraqi soldier turned militant. Butch is endearing, young, and a ravishingly handsome Marine. Our spies tell us that he “just wants to fuck and kill everything” in Iraq — until, that is, he falls in love with the Iraqi.

A Bittersweet Life and Tale of Two Sisters were incredible films while The Good, The Bad, The Weird is entertaining. I haven’t seen “Saw the Devil” but reviews also were good for that one. So, I’m excited Kim Ji-Woon is making his debut in Hollywood.

  2. Vanessa says:

Yay! A new Colin Firth movie! Can’t wait!

  3. Ripley says:

    Stephen Fry. Excellent.

  4. amy says:

Ahhh, so many people making their English debut. xD

and where did you get that photo of Winslet and Foster together? LOL, did you make it? coz it looks pretty wonky in parts where it cropped to rough, but it actually looks pretty great scrolling down. xD It even has a little shadow on Foster’s arm where it crosses with Winslet’s.

  5. Joel Burman says:

I haven’t heard about the Last Stand before, but it sounds awesome!
Definitively gonna check it out! I love gone in 60 seconds and High Noon!

  6. Red says:

    - I can’t say that I am thrilled about those list of directors for the next Superman. I like the directors, but are they ready for a movie of this size? At the end of the day I will pretty much always trust Nolan’s judgement, but I think if he is overseeing it, he could take a gamble with the likes of a Ben Affleck. That would be really interesting.

    - As much as I love Stone, I’m definitely rooting for Wasikowska for the Spiderman movie. Her style of acting mixed with Garfield would generate great chemistry, I believe.

    - Gotta love seeing Kimberly Pierce back to work.

  7. I was REALLLY looking forward to “The Master.” Hopefully it will see the light of day one day.

Emma Stone would be perfect for Spider-Man in my opinion.

    God of Carnage sounds promising!

  8. rtm says:

I absolutely can’t wait for X-Men: First Class! The cast is just phenomenal. Speaking of amazing cast, that God of Carnage is one to watch for sure. Glad to see Waltz acting opposite some real female thespians.

I’m impressed with how Colin Firth’s career keeps getting better and better. He’s so much more than Mr. Darcy! I’m looking forward to seeing The King’s Speech.

    • Castor says:

I don’t know Ruth, it seems like they are trying to turn X-Men into Twilight with all those kids cast in the movie…

      • rtm says:

You call McAvoy and Fassbender kids??? OH no sireee… I think this is pretty far away from Twilight… there were rumors that Taylor whatshisname was almost cast in this movie, but glad it didn’t happen.

  9. NicoleSmith says:

The superhero market is too cluttered. It seems like Superman hasn’t been popular onscreen since the 1980′s, but perhaps that is why they are putting it in the hands of Christopher Nolan. He did revive Batman and make it profitable again. I still say it could be a disaster unless the director is really good. Black Widow sounds like it may go over about as well as Catwoman did. The Spiderman reboot is another one that just feels flat.

    • Red says:

Agreed on the Black Widow spinoff, although I have high hopes for Spiderman because of the involvement of Marc Webb. If he’s able to re-catch any of the magic from (500) Days of Summer, it should be a interesting take on the comic.

    • Castor says:

Well, if Black Widow is as bland as Scar-Jo played her in Iron Man 2, the movie will be a catastrophe of epic proportion ;)

  10. Heather says:

Beckinsale back for Underworld? Okaaaaaaaaaaaaaay. I’m never going to complain about the lovely Kate as the vampriss in lycra (nor Rhona Mitra for that matter), but aren’t we getting a tad carried away with this franchise?

Speaking of carried away, Bill and Ted? Really? What is great about Bill and Ted is how 80′s the series is. It’s like taking Wayne’s World out of the 90′s. These wonderful gems are unique to the culture they were bred in. Unless a clever Brady Bunch twist is involved I can’t see this as successful.

Oh and thanks for the plug for me and Kai. We’re press whores!

    • Castor says:

You welcome Heather! Sweet post and we would have linked your 40 Greatest Movie Deaths too if it didn’t come in a day after this post ;) I have only seen parts of the first Underworld movie so I’m not the biggest fan of the franchise, isn’t this the 4th or 5th movie, pretty impressive for a female action hero.

  11. Dan says:

I guess Joaquin Phoenix is back looking for jobs again…!

…The only good news about Rob Zombie is when he’s not working…that someone has given him another project is terrible news!

  12. Wow. Amazing article and thanks for the post. I can’t believe that Joaquin Phoenix is thinking about returning to movies. I thought he made it clear that he was done? He really went off the deep end.
