Movie Trailer: The Tree of Life (2011)

The Tree of Life PosterThe trailer for Terrence Malick’s highly anticipated film The Tree of Life has finally hit the interweb and the wait was all worth it. I reviewed a draft of the script last summer and I know a lot of people are really looking forward to see what Malick has in store so watch the stunning movie trailer below, you won’t be disappointed.

From Terrence Malick, the acclaimed director of such classic films as Badlands, Days of Heaven and The Thin Red Line, The Tree of Life is the impressionistic story of a Midwestern family in the 1950′s. The film follows the life journey of the eldest son, Jack, through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father (Brad Pitt). Jack (played as an adult by Sean Penn) finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking answers to the origins and meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith. Through Malick’s signature imagery, we see how both brute nature and spiritual grace shape not only our lives as individuals and families, but all life.

The Tree Of Life opens on May 27, 2011. Mark your calendar!

  1. I’ve seen the trailer in a bootleg version weeks ago when it got leaked. It looked amazing though it was shot via cellphone. Yet, that was nothing compared to seeing it on the big screen. Images like that are just stunning to watch. I don’t care who you are. That is cinematic poetry. I was in tears when I saw that trailer in the big screen because of its beauty.

I have all of Malick’s films on DVD and I’ve only seen “The New World” in the theaters. I think Malick just made sure that 2011 will be a good year. Hopefully, better than the last one. He’s one of the last cinematic masters we have and I’m glad we’ll have another film from him after this one.

Indeed, an absolutely mesmerizing trailer. Needless to say I watched it half a dozen times in a row :P

Malick is absolutely one of the greatest filmmakers of our time. I can’t believe that this film has had so much trouble being released. I really couldn’t have wished for anything more from a trailer. I was excited to see this film before, and now I ecstatic. From what when can see from the trailer, I can’t imagine anything being better in regards to cinema brilliance for 2011. I am truly excited for this. Can’t wait.

It didn’t have trouble being released. It’s just Malick being Malick and taking all the time he needs to edit the movie. There is no doubt that he is still probably tinkering with it and will continue to do so even after the movie is actually released in theater. That’s the true mark of an artist guys.

I find it odd that the young Jack reminds me of Jim Caviezel as Pvt. Witt in Thin Red line, with the look and the Southern accent. Then the adult is Sean Penn, Sgt. Welsh. And the internal conflict is the same as the one between Witt and Welsh, the battle between love/grace and war/indifference, whether human nature is inherently evil or inherently good. Coincidence? I think not.

    • Castor says:

Very interesting and insightful observation. The trailer definitely reminds of The Thin Red Line although you have to admit, all of Malick’s movie essentially deal with the themes you mention.

  3. Rich says:

This trailer does look amazing (as does the poster), but I have to admit that I have a hard time imagining any kin of Brad Pitt’s growing up to look like Sean Penn.

  4. Steve says:

Great example of a trailer that shows so much without really giving anything away. Most of that credit can likely go to Mallick who tells his stories in cagey ways. Am I the only one that’s thinking about Benjamin Button instead of The New World when I’m watching this?

  5. Mike Lippert says:

It will be interesting to see how audiences in 2011 react to Malick and he has become somewhat of a dying breed (filmmakers who invest almost all of their effort into images and abstract ideas, especially since David Gordon Green apperently only makes stoner comedies now). I really hope it finds an audience and is embraced by critics.

  6. Aaron says:

Only Malick and P.T. Anderson make films as high brow as this. Something to look forward to in 2011.

  7. Colleeng says:

I recently saw this trailer with something, I guess Black Swan. While I found it visually stunning, I thought “Is this about anything?” I’m on the fence for now.

  8. Red says:

This looked like a Levi’s Jeans commercial to me…

  9. Clarabela says:

The trailer looks amazing. I can’t wait to see the movie.
