First Look at Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams in Terrence Malick’s Untitled Romance
The Tree of Life hasn’t hit movie theaters yet (May 27) but THR got their hands on the first picture of Terrence Malick upcoming Untitled Romance which will supposedly come out in 2012. As you would expect from a Malick picture, everything is kept under tight wraps although we know shooting was completed a few weeks ago.
I was bummed when it was announced that Christian Bale dropped off and was replaced by Ben Affleck but in Malick I trust! Aside from Affleck and Rachel McAdams pictured below, the ridiculously brilliant cast includes Olga Kurylenko, Barry Pepper, Rachel Weisz and Javier Bardem.

What do you think? Doesn’t this shot remind you of the unforgettable “Days of Heaven?”

Whatever Malick is doing and with anyone. I’m all for it. 2012? Wow. I was going to say 2013 but let’s just let Terry finish his film first.
Does that mean 2014? xD
Hope not, we might not be around by then ahah
Oh man, McAdams framed against the Malick Windswept Background. I cannot wait.
I hear you Nic, I will probably pass out from sheer satisfaction
And the movie isn’t even out yet, ahah.
It reminds me of Days of Heaven which can’t be a bad thing. I’m bummed out that Bale um, bailed out of this one. I mean, I want to see him in a romance… especially since the last movie where he displayed there’s a romantic bone in his body is a Malick film, I REALLY want him in this one. Instead he chose to be a Robinson Crusoe-type stranded in some island… again w/ the weight yo-yoing [sigh]
Yea, the Bale dropout is a bummer.
I always kind of liked Affleck. He’s a relative lightweight compared to Bale, but if any director can draw something out of him, then Malick is the guy.
Wow he is going to do that again? He must be addicted or something, it’s starting to get a little bit sick ah
I don’t mind Ben Affleck, he is a bit limited as an actor but it’s not nearly as distracting as it used to be and he is certainly redeeming himself lately. Just disappointed my dream trio of Bale + McAdams + Malick is missing a piece.
Honestly, I would be more excited for this if the cast didn’t include Affleck, or if I knew what capacity Affleck was playing to in the story. He’s a very niche actor capable of only limited emoting and characterization; I thought he was pretty good in The Town, but that’s because movies like that play to his strengths. Malick’s a good enough director that I won’t sweat Affleck’s presence too much, and the rest of the cast is tremendous (McAdams in a Malick film should be huge for establishing her actress cred). Plus, that shot’s pretty gorgeous.
I completely agree Andrew that Ben Affleck is an actor with limited range. When he is not asked to do too much outside that comfort zone, he is a competent actor. Even in The Town, you could see here and there some of his limitations.
Now, I believe he has a central role in the movie since he reportedly replaced Christian Bale. If I remember right, Bale and McAdams were attached to the movie from the onset. As long as he sticks to the quiet and stoic character he is best at, he should be just fine.
