Viggo Mortensen’s Drop Out Reveals “Superman: Man Of Steel” Role?

Viggo MortensenIt has been revealed by EW that ‘A History Of Violence‘ star Viggo Mortensen is no longer in talks with Universal about a possible role in Snow White and the Huntsman which will star Charlize Theron. The 52 year old actor had been attached to the film but after cutting any links with the movie, does it suggest he will take a role in Superman: Man Of Steel? Mortensen had been rumored to play villain General Zod in the Warner Bros. flick which will see release towards the end of 2012.

The film will also star Kevin Costner as Clark Kent’s father Jonathan Kent and up-and-coming British actor Henry Cavill as Superman himself. Will the addition of Viggo Mortensen bring  an effective contrast to the fatherly edge that Costner will provide? My bet is that Mortensen would create a character whose evil and cunning shine through to create a superb anti-hero.

Although no comment has yet been published by either Mortensen or Warner Bros, the news has led many to speculate about the actor’s involvement with the project. However, other actors such as Michael Shannon and Edgar Ramirez remain linked to the villain role. Whatever happens, it seems that if Warner Bros. are indeed interested in Mortensen’s talents, they will have to have some money ready. The Hollywood Reporter suggested that negotiations with Universal over the role in ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ broke down because of a huge difference in the fee Mortensen wished to receive and what Universal were willing to pay. Allegedly, Mortensen asked for $8 million as well as gross participation. It seems that Hollywood actors of his caliber are coming packaged along with ever bigger price tags.

So what do you think? Do the reports suggest that Viggo Mortensen will be the new villain in ‘Superman: Man Of Steel’ and if so how do you think Mortensen will fare in the role? With Costner on board we have ourselves a fatherfigure to satisfy our need for some good. Will it be Mortensen to provide for our lust for evil? We’ll have to wait and see for now.

Wow Viggo calm down!!! 8 million is way pricy fee for that Snow White flick!!!

  2. Castor says:

Zack Snyder could assemble a great cast but I would still be worried because he is the one directing and so far, he hasn’t shown anything except make his scenes look cool and pretty.

    • rtm says:

That concern is warranted, especially the way Sucker Punch turns out. I do hope with Nolan mentoring him in this project, some of our concern would be alleviated.

    • JL says:

Which is all he really needs to do in this movie. He’s got a great knack for visual flair and vision. The part where he’s lacking is just writing/story. But that’s being taken care of by Goyer.

Superman II: the Richard Donner Cut is a much better film than the original Superman and it has a much sharper sense of humor. It has less unintentional corny humor and General Zod is an awesome villain, so I’m glad their using him again. The ending is the same as Superman, though, because Donner wanted to use the ending for SUperman II but the producers used it for the first film. Viggo Mortenson is the only good thing about Gus Van Sant’s Psycho remake. Great actor, very under appreciated. The overblown LoTR films don’t show him at his best.

  4. Fitz says:

I’m hoping that he is the villain in Superman, but him dropping out of the Snow White is good enough for me.

I have lost interest in many superhero flicks…and if Viggo really plays as the villain in the upcoming Superman movie, I’ll watch the movie…For sure.

Viggo…pleease do play in Superman ;)

  6. Andrew says:

Actually, Viggo’s not going to be in Snyder’s Superman at all, it seems. Which I’m fine with. He’s better than being in a Snyder film.

    • fitz says:

That might have made me consider watching. Oh well.

    • JL says:

I don’t really trust Latino Review.

      • Andrew says:

I don’t really see what’s not to trust. LR asked Snyder point-blank about Viggo, Snyder said Vig-no. Straightforward enough. Of course, things change, and Viggo might end up being Zod if Zod is indeed the villain of the film, so we just have to wait and see.

Meantime, I wouldn’t really hold my breath.

Guess we will have to wait and see but I would not hang my hat on that. He is at that vaunted place in his career where he can (and seems to) choose his projects carefully – this would seem to buck that trend. But end of day, who knows? If you throw enough money at me at a certain point I would be a fool to turn it down.
