Peter Jackson’s First Video Blog For “The Hobbit”
Peter Jackson has just posted his first video blog from the set of The Hobbit on Facebook. It’s a really great 10-minute peek into the behind-the-scene work of the two-part movie which is set 60 years before Lord of the Rings and revolves around the journey of Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) to the Lonely Mountains to reclaim a treasure guarded by the dragon, Smaug.
While most of the things shown on the video have already been seen in the LOTR trilogy, it’s still nice to get a sneak peek of the set, the cast and the behind-the-scene preparation and realize that this is actually happening after so many delays! The first part of The Hobbit will be released in December 2012.
Check out the video below and let us know what you think!

Anybody who has followed AM for a while now has to know how much this excites me. A great look at all the sets, and I got chills down my spine when the likes of Richard Taylor, Alan Lee and John Howe came into the camera. Yeah, you never see these guys on camera, but they are responsible for all the minute details that help make these type of films enjoyable.
December 2012 can’t get here fast enough… even though it will be the end of the world…
I swear, if that movie comes out the third or fourth week of that month instead of the first, I’m going to be more upset about not seeing this film than I will be about the end of the world.
OMG! I would kill to be involved in this project. As ANYTHING! Catering, extra work, cleaning…I don’t care. It looks like so much fun! Peter Jackson actually seems really nice.
Yea it looks like a really awesome place to be at right now!!!
Me, too! I’ll be Richard Armitage’s assistant for free!
I’ll even pay for the airfare… ahah. Man it’s amazing how slim Peter Jackson is right now, good for him though.
It’s amazing that he is actually keeping it off! He looks like a different person!
I would probably work for free, just to have that experience.
I think a bunch of folks have been plotting and scheming about how to get down there! I met someone who went there (NZ) a year or two ago on sort of a “lotr” tour. She showed me some of her photos. That place is BEAUTIFUL!
I can’t freaking wait for the release of the Hobbits. Peter Jackson is awesome and everything in the set looks really cool! I just can wish all the best for the team and this production.
This is awesome! Thanks for sharing Castor!
That music just leaves a good and warm feeling inside you doesn’t it? And I’m not even remotely Celtic (or Irish or Welsh or wherever those strings, flutes and pipes originate from). Ha!
Yea, nothing like a little LOTR music to put you back in the mood for a return to Middle Earth
There are no words to express my excitement for this.
There and back again indeed. The video doesn’t show too much that we haven’t already seen in the LotR series, but viewing the footage instills an immediate sense of warmth and familiarity which is endlessly comforting. Glad to see Jackson back in his sandbox, though I hope the Jackson of The Hobbit has shaken off the Jackson of The Lovely Bones and King Kong.
Don’t jinx it now
Those are the best years in the life of Peter Jackson
I just hope the 3D part of the production doesn’t show things down/take away from other aspects of the filming. It’ll also be interesting to see how well that works with the newly established 48 frames per second, something no other film has done. For how groundbreaking Lord of the Rings was, The Hobbit could potentially be even more important.
I really wonder how 48 fps looks in film compared to the standard 24 fps. Obviously in gaming, it’s a massive improvement so I’m definitely interested the potential of making this cinematographic leap.
