The Game
You are a producer with a hot movie script which has been green-lit by the studio and it’s time for you to find your dream director and cast. The budget for your principal talent is $50 million and not one penny more. You will engage in bidding wars with competing producers to get the services of the actors and directors you want for your movie! As your funds dwindle, difficult decisions will have to be made.
The Rules
Producers will take turn nominating actors. Bidding will start immediately and continue until there is no more bidding for at least 30 minutes.
- Auction style – 7 Rounds (6 actors and 1 director)
- Selections are made in the comments
- To avoid mistakes and confusion, you must comment within the thread for each nomination and name the talent by name
- A bid automatically starts at $1 million
- Nominated actors will go to the highest bidder after 30 minutes of no bids
- You cannot bid more money than you need to finish filling your roster of 6 actors and 1 director
- If you nominate a talent that no one else bids on, you become the owner at the cost of $1 million
- You can only nominate living people
- No time limit: Bids will be closed at the commissioner’s discretion after at least 30 minutes of inactivity
- The auction draft will run until the draft is completed. However, it will not run continuously and the commissioner will decide when to stop for the day.
- The draft will be circular (not a snake)
- Incorrect bids can be canceled retroactively by the commissioner (don’t spend more than you have)
- Trading picks is allowed
- Example of an auction draft

Andrew Robinson nominates Min-Sik Choi for $1
And He’s SOLD
I’d like to also nominate Joe Wright
Good one Andrew, I worked w/ Joe in my last film and all I can say is your movie is in good hands
He’s SOLD for CHEEP
I nominate Cathryn Bigelow for a million.
Ah the director is set…
I nominate Edward Norton
$3 on Ed Norton
$4
$5 for Norton
$6
I’m going to make a wild guess and nominate Timothy Dalton
This one I like! I bod 3 million for Timothy Dalton!!!!
Oh boy, I’m glad I don’t have a role for Dalton or I’d be grinding my teeth seeing him in someone else’s film
Come on there’s always room for Timothy Dalton!
Glad to hear you say that about one my fave actors of all time, Joel! But I actually have another James Bond in mind to add to my cast
Ah better save some cash for DC then I guess or are you thinking of sneaking him under the radar??
Think outside the box, Joel… DC isn’t the only other Bond actor out there
Ah must be Pierce then I guess Connery is retired and it can’t be any of the other buffons!!
Connery is really retired? But this is a ‘fantasy’ draft after all so as long as the actor is still alive, technically we can still nominate him, right Castor?
Yes, as long as he is alive, you can nominate him.
Yes of course but I have actually heard him saying in interviews that he doesn’t want to work no more. I know Spielberg asked him to do Indy 4 but he declined saying he was to busy being lazy all day.
Ok then, I nominate Sean Connery. It’s a small cameo so and it’s filmed in the highlands in Scotland so hopefully he’d be willing to get off his bum and be on location for a few days’ work
I bet he would! Are you rebooting Highlander? Viggo would be awesome in that one!
Ahah, no I’m not rebooting anything. I always complain that there is no originality anymore in Hollywood so it’d be hypocritical of me to pitch a reboot
But yeah, Viggo will certainly be eons better than Christopher Lambert!
I nominate Richard Jenkins
I nominate Jon Hamm
Idoubt there will be any biding wars on him. Man he was pale in the Town!
Red Rum Productions nominates Samantha Morton.
I almost forgot! Thank God my last 2 haven’t been taken.
I nominate John Malkovich.
Might as well throw in my director, too: Matthew Vaughn.
$2 mil for Vaughn.
3 mil for Vaughn
Wow, the first time I’ve had to fight for someone.
I would be worried about that, what are your execs yelling to in the phone as we speak?
Hey–I have a lot of great, underrated comic talent in my lineup. It’s not my fault everybody else is going for huge A-Listers
I also have a 2-time Oscar nominee and an Oscar winner.
$4 mil for Vaughn.
5 for Vaughn.
$6 mil for Vaughn.
You know what? I’ll let you have Vaughn. I thought of a better fit for my movie.
Actually I have someone else prepared as I don’t want to pay more than $6. But thanks Nick!
I thought i posted this already, but guess no
Dirty with Class Entertainment nominates Amanda Seyfreid
Wish I could squeeze her in but I’ll pass this time.
We should be able to bid negative money because her career is going in the wrong direction!
Hmmm, i thought i would have to fight for her
And with that, i think i am going to take a break from nominating, since i think i have enough people to fill out any of the extra roles i might include in my pitch
And i still need to decide who i am going to pick for the knight in my story
Finally–because you said we could have extras if we have the money (and I certainly do)–I want to nominate a final, extra player (if that’s alright):
Ken Jeong
Wow you are really going for a limited release aren’t you?
Jay Baruchel is decently known these days. He doesn’t have huge draw yet, but almost everybody in my cast has a recognizable face. And almost everybody likes these people.
And with the success of Bridesmaids (not to mention the thousand other movies she’s done lately), Kristin Wiig is no soft sell.
This one is for Castor, I nominate Rachel Mcadams time to digg deep in your pockets guys!
I have no idea what you are talking about! $3 on McAdams
$2
4 million Rachel Mcadams
What about $5 million sir
You got way to much cash to play with I’ll leave it to someone else this time.
You are weak!
6 mil
I actually have a some extra money lying around, but i’m not sure i want to get into a bidding war with Castor
Come on Julian! He deserves that after driving up the prize on Deb.
I actually have more money and could buy her out… but I wouldn’t do that to Castor.
Aahha my plan was not to get her but screw Joel at his own game by bidding up the price.
You should Nick Castor is just trying to mess me up. He really needs Rachel in his film.
42 mil for Rachel McAdams!… Just kidding.
You can have her Nick
haha, no thanks. She doesn’t fit my movie.
I’m honestly really tempted to get Racheal for myself…just because
Ya know what, screw it. If Nick won’t take her i will. $5 on Racheal McAdams
It’s already at $6 by Sam.
I guess I will bid $7 for fun ah
Sam has bid 6 million on her…
I think i posted like 1 second after Sam. Anyways, i don’t feel like paying more for her, so castor and Sam can bid over her now
What! You have $23 million left and gazillions of actors
Julian has misunderstood it its not a casting agent draft… =)
Come on Sam, you can have her for $8
$8 million for her
9 Million for McAdams
Red Rum Productions nominates Samantha Morton
I nominate director Ruben Fleischer.
I think I won him now
I got 7 cast members and a director for 1 mil each. w00t!
I think there are some nominations that are closed by now
I nominate Milla Jovovich
I shall nominate Carey Mulligan
She would actually fit in my movie but its late her and I really don’t have time for drawn out biding wars.
Oh shoot, I didn’t realize this before my last comment. $2 mil for Mulligan.
$4 million for Mulligan
$6 for Mulligan
$7 for Mulligan
Ha.. ha.. we’ll see how much you want her Castor. $8 for Mulligan.
What about $10 for Mulligan
You can have her then Castor, that’s just way too expensive for me. Fortunately I have a good replacement for her just in case this happens
$12 million for Carey Mulligan
$14 million for Carey Mulligan
What time is the draft closed tonight Castor?
It will just keep going till everyone has finished their cast
I can’t participate anymore but I’ve got my key cast in place so I’ll just see who’s still available to draft later tonight. It’s been fun, everyone! Thanks again Castor for organizing this.
Well… I think I’m done, guys! I’m left with 42 mil… but I can’t think of anyone else. Unless I just want some super awesome big-name cameo appearance. Actually, that’s a good idea.
I nominate Matt Damon. And just so I don’t have to worry about it… $42 mil.
Finally giving in to the execs. =)
lol… he wouldn’t have a big part. And he wouldn’t even be advertised. It’d be like Bill Murray in Zombieland. Total surprise.
I love Damons cameo in Eurotrip! That one is hillarious! If you top it then you are onto something!
Yup. That’s a great one.
I’ll round up my nomination with the following actors:
Blake Lively
Paul Walker
Sigourney Weaver
Blake Lively for $2
7 million on Blake Lively
Whoa, Joel, I just realize you’ve got THREE of my all-time fave actors in your cast!! Bale, Butler (a reunion after Reign of Fire) AND Dalton, OMG I’m sooo watching your movie I don’t care what your plot is! Too bad you’d have to ruin it by casting Paul Walker though
I actually may have to pitch two movies because Bale don’t really fit in my main idea for a pitching film.
You don’t like Paul Walker I find him being quite underrated and this will be a very different part for him.
Meh, I just think he’s a pretty boy with zero acting skills. I’d still see the movie though if at least two of those three actors are in it. So are you saying that Bale will NOT be in the same movie as GB and Dalton then?
Probably not as I have it figured out now he would an extra or something and that feels like such a waste I have enough talent to scratch together another feature with him as the lead.
Sorry to disapoint you. =)
Nominate Clive Owen
Also Nominate Famke Janssen
Nomination also made for Brian Cox
Ooooh good one, T. I was gonna draft him but I got another veteran Scot instead, Mr. Connery
Connery! FANTASTIC choice!!
Well I hope he’d be willing to come out of retirement briefly to shoot in the Scottish Highlands
It’s a small but important role.
For the record I bid $9 for McAdams
and $2 for Lively
How many more days will this go on?
Also, i am going to nominate Sean Penn. I need to have a few older actors in reserve just in case
I think this will conclude today.
I nominate Sarah michelle gellar
Just saw your comment above Castor. I will save her for later
Wait, i misinterpreted and thought you meant it ended right now.
Anyways, Sarah will be my final nomination. I have more than enough actors to fill out any extra roles that come along
I nominate Vera Farmiga
$2 for Farmiga
I nominate Sofia Vergara and Stan Lee
Marvel reboot? Fantastic four?
ugghh, Fantastic Four is in definite need of a reboot, but RWP will not be sponsoring one! lol
When do we put together our pitches and stuff? Is it the same as last time?
Yes. Feel free to get started on that.
I’m done now as I have my last three actors. I’ll probably try to do two pitches this time to be able to use Bale.
Thanks to everyone for participating an especially Castor for hosting! Good night everyone!
Good night Joel, it had been a lot of fun indeed!
I nominate Tom Wilkinson
How do people have so many cast members? I thought that the limit was 7?
For me, the reason i got so many people is because i don’t have the exact details of my movie done yet(I only recently got done with school, which didn’t leave me a lot of free time to work on my draft and i also ended up forgetting the date of the draft), so i wanted some extra choices in case a extra role or two comes up. I have my main roles pretty much planned out, but i in case a extra role came up(or the opportunity for one) i wanted to have some extras
And when i asked about a limit Castor said that as long as the person still had money they could get more people.
Can I still nominate? I had to leave for a while
I nominate John C. Reilly then
Chewitel Ejiofor also
Since it appears that this has concluded, Raise the Stakes would like to trade Tom Hanks for the undrafted Jeff Bridges.
Castor after the draft is completely finished is it possible to add actors to your cast?
Sure.
Castor…I still couldn’t figure out how this work and I don’t have enough time to see all the bets.
Can I with draw from this Fantasy Draft? I’ll join again when it is easier for my brain and time to digest
Have fun everyone.
Will try to read all your Movie Pitches later.
So what’s next Castor? Can we we just add whomever we want (those who haven’t been drafted obviously) to our cast now?
Yes just finish your cast if it’s not done. Everyone seems to be about done
Ok, do I just put it in the comments then? Sorry for all the daft questions, Castor. As you can see I think the previous way is better
Ok, first of all I’d like to drop Matthew Vaughn from directing duties and add Duncan Jones instead. Vaughn will still be co-producing w/ me so he might have some input on the project.
So here’s the rest of my cast:
- James Purefoy
- Idris Elba
- Emily Blunt
- Romola Garai
- Thandie Newton
So if you just want to round out your cast now does it still cost you money?
Well to round out my cast I’ll ask for Vincent Cassel, Bin Won and Elisabeth Moss
I’ll also go ahead and allocate the rest of my budget to location shooting and retaining the services of WETA for the CGI I won’t need, but will think about along the way
If you would like to pitch a movie. Please post one by June 6!
I’m honestly not sure if i will be able to finis my pitch by this time, but i’ll try
In what order will they be posted?
The pitch should be posted on your personal blogs. I will read them all and have some fellow AM staff read them as well and we will feature our favorite 1 or 2 pitches on the site.
Wow, what an honor that would be then to be featured on AM
Will you be providing links to all of the pitches then Castor? I may do a post about my cast first before I do the actual pitch.
Yes of course
Phew, good then… can’t just rely on FC’s dismal traffic to get people to read my pitch
This is the first time I actually have my pitch started BEFORE I have my cast. Can’t you see I’m addicted to this Castor?
I would like to add:
- michael Sheen
- Freddy Rodriguez
- Michael Parks
- Edgar Ramirez
- Alfonso Arau
- Michael Raymond James
- Sam Rockwell
- Hailee Steinfeld
- Mary Elizabeth Winstead
- Jessica Biel
- Melinda Clarke
- Xander Berkeley
If that is possible of course.
Really? That many people?
yes please castor
Someone is hogging up, this is another problem with this draft method.
If anyone wanted them they would have been nominated
Dont take it personal I did the same thing its just a flaw eith the system. I’ll try to do two pitches because I have so many actors.
I know we didn’t hold to it, and that’s fine, but the rules stated that there would be 7 rounds. In my mind this meant each person would be limited to only picking six actors plus a director. (Or some combination thereof and trading afterward to wind up with six actors and a director.)
There wouldn’t have been a “flaw with the system” if everyone was limited to that.
That said, I’m not complaining. I enjoyed it and love my cast.
Are you doing a pitch Jonathan?
We’re supposed to post our pitch today, right?
Yes, leave the links here or send me an email. Thanks!
Do we have to follow the same pitch format as last time(with the logline, why it should be made, etc.)?
If you want to but not a requirement.
Before people go WTF at the length, i wanted to shorten it, but i couldn’t find a way to. I did honestly try to make this one better than my last time tho
http://dirtywithclass.wordpress.com/2011/06/07/fantasy-pitch-2/
Just so you know, Castor, My pitch will be up on my site on Wednesday 6/8.
Here ya go!: http://scarletsp1der.wordpress.com/2011/06/08/special-event-thescarletsp1ders-fantasy-movie-pitch-2/
thanks T
So Castor, what happened to posting the pitches that you liked?
I’m still waiting for Joel to send his pitch. I will make a post linking to all pitches. I will definitely need at least a week to read all of them and get others to look at them as well.
I’m doing some final touches to it. I’m going minimalistic a la Scrlet Spidey. No novel pitch here.
cant’ wait to read it!
Here’s the link to my pitch: http://flixchatter.wordpress.com/2011/06/06/hollywood-movie-draft-pitch-iii-untitled-sci-fi-by-duncan-jones/
Castor, I’ve replied to your question on the blog. Good one btw, I was rushing to finish it so some of the details weren’t clear.
Here’s my link: http://www.joelburman.com/2011/06/sisters-in-the-sky/
Sorry guys that it took so long. Some of the text and images are not formatted the way I wanted it to but now its up!
