Corey Stoll on Playing Ernest Hemingway in “Midnight in Paris”
Veteran character actor Corey Stoll appeared in Woody Allen’s time-travel comedy Midnight in Paris over the summer and was recently interviewed by AskMen about his experience shooting the movie. Here is what he had to say about Allen asking him to do a little improv:
“Sometimes he would say, “Just make something up.” Make something up? I’m making up Ernest Hemingway dialogue, in a Woody Allen film! It was terrifying, and I was a little timid the first couple times, but then I realized they probably won’t give me another take. There were definitely several times where I made the very conscious decision to will myself to be superconfident. “I’m Ernest fucking Hemingway! I don’t have to apologize for anything!” I think that’s a part of his character that’s so attractive and exciting to people now. Aside from being one of the most brilliant writers of the 20th century, he had a world view that was unapologetic. I had to embrace that, because I’m certainly not unapologetic.”

In the thumbnail picture he kinda looks like Tom Hardy!
What Allen gave no direction?! I’m shocked. Good on Corey Stoll though.
Well Allen does give his actors a lot of freedom but obviously, this is just a bit where he was asked to do a little improvisation.
