Watch: Trailer for Clint Eastwood’s “J. Edgar”
Warner Bros. has debuted the first trailer for Clint Eastwood’s biopic J. Edgar on Apple. Leonardo DiCaprio stars as J. Edgar Hoover, the powerful first director of the FBI, while Armie Hammer plays his second-in-command and rumored lover Clyde Tolson. The impressive cast also includes Naomi Watts, Josh Lucas, Jeffrey Donovan, Ed Westwick, and Judi Dench.
The period recreation looks impressive and this looks like it has a lot of potential as a biopic. The cast certainly is a big selling point and DiCaprio’s role is screaming for awards attention. Nonetheless, given Clint Eastwood’s recent work (Hereafter, Invictus) and the fact that the movie skipped the festival circuit, I will keep my expectations low. What do you think?
J. Edgar opens on November 9 in limited release. Check out the trailer below or head on to Apple for the HD version.
Based on the life of J. Edgar Hoover, the man often credited with making the FBI what it is today: an efficient, crime-fighting organization shrouded in secrecy. Hoover founded the organization in 1935 and remained director until his death in 1972.

With Eastwood as of late, there’s an uncertainty to it. Yet, this could be really good as Leo is in good form. I’m glad they’re not going for that J. Edgar gay thing but rather how he created the FBI and became troubled.
Low expectations it is. Despite a great cast (and DiCaprio rocking yet another accent), this looks like more generic Oscar bait from Eastwood. The last film of his I thought was really strong was Letter’s from Iwo Jima, and even that was just kind of a typical war film.
Also, it may be the low video quality, but the aging effects look really dodgy to me.
We are on the same page. I don’t really find Eastwood to be too appealing as a director. Letters from Iwo Jima was excellent but everything since and just about everything before that has average.
I’m sure this will be better than Invictus and Hereafter (anything could be better than that movie…I despised it). I’m highly looking forward to this! Sure it’ll be good.
Let’s hope so. Both Invictus and Hereafter looked so, so bland.
Okay I haven’t seen many Eastwood films, recently or ever, but I do love biopics and the subject matter is pretty cool. And I am almost as excited for Armie Hammer in this as I am for Leo.
I just hope this doesn’t try to glorify the man. Beyond that, color me disinterested.
Leo looks like he’s going for the Oscar here and hopefully he gets it, but Eastwood is usually hit-or-miss nowadays which is why I’m not too siked for it just yet.
I like Leo but I’m not going lie, all I see when I look at the trailer is Leo.
Man, the lighting in this is very, very unattractive. Ew. This was a very mediocre trailer.
Kind of like Letters from Iwo Jima but really gray instead.
I enjoy seeing Leo do stuff like this. Looks interesting, but not sure about the old age makeup.
a problem I see with the cast is DiCaprio himself. Unfortunately, he has been doing the same type of character a lot lately and it makes none of the performances truly stand out. Shutter Island, Blood Diamond, Inception, now this one…he looks, acts, and performs the same way with a similar character. Thoughts?
I still think this one will be neat to see. Love the tribute to James Cagney’s film, G-Men, in the trailer! Appropriate!
The same type of character? I dunno about that… but I will say that he does seem to have a kind of comfort zone when it comes to roles, which is why I’m really looking forward to seeing him as a villain in ‘Django Unchained.’ At least he looks like an adult now. For awhile it seemed like he’d never shed his baby face looks.
I still think he looks too boyish and I’m w/ Scarlet that I think DiCaprio has that signature style that makes him seem less of a chameleon. He doesn’t exactly ‘disappear’ into his roles like Gary Oldman could for example. Overall I’m just neutral about it, I might see it but probably a rental.
Yea, as I said above. I’m not really convinced, looking at the trailer, all I see is Leonardo DiCaprio being the usual Leonardo DiCaprio.
Allow me to counter the sullen “woe is Eastwood” whimpering going on here with a bit of exasperating fanboy chanting:
OMG SO STOKED!!! SO GOING TO BE GREATEST MOVIE EVARRRRRR!!! EASTWOOD IS GOD!!! GOSH YOU PEOPLE JUST DON’T GET IT!!!
There, you may now go about your business.
For the record: I think it looks just fine and I am ancitpating it. I like Eastwood’s films on the whole, and really didn’t mind Invictus or Hereafter.
You are not authorized to go against the flow sir. Next time, it will be the dog house. THE DOG HOUSE!
Kind of surprised to see the lack of excitement for this film.
That being said, this looks bland and generic. And that voice-over was bloody awful, as well as Leo’s peek-a-boo accent.
Like the same surprise when I come at the end of the week to beat your weak-ass fantasy baseball team for the trophy?

The trailer looks decent but the last few films of Eastwood’s weren’t that great. In fact I thought Gran Torino was just bad, Hereafter was just bland. I haven’t seen Invictus yet, not sure if I want to.
Leo has been the presumed Oscar front-runner all year, and I think he could still pull it off. But the challenge is that Eastwood likes to give his films that Old-timey feel, which worked great with the Academy for a while, but they keep trying to get younger blood into the membership and as they do, I think that Eastwood will be less and less an Oscar name unless he starts updating his style.
But personally, I am very excited for this. In a strange way, the combination of Dustin Lance Black’s script with Clint Eastwood’s “era” could actually make for an interesting portrayal in the gay character/subtext department. Besides, who in their right mind chooses the FBI over Armie Hammer?
