Watch: Trailer for “We Bought a Zoo” with Matt Damon, Scarlett Johansson

Twentieth Century Fox has debuted the first trailer for Cameron Crowe’s We Bought a Zoo on Apple. Starring Matt Damon, Scarlett Johansson, Elle Fanning and Thomas Haden Church, the film tells the story of a single father (Damon) who decides to buy and renovate a dilapidated zoo to fulfill the wish of his late wife. Alice Brosh McKenna (The Devil Wears Prada, Morning Glory) wrote the screenplay, based on the memoir by Benjamin Mee. The film also marks Crowe’s return to filmmaking after a six year absence.

The trailer highlights the strong cast Crowe was able to put together as well as the fact that this is going to be a family-oriented film with plenty of heartwarming moments. Cheesy song, cute little kids and inspirational dialogue aside, I’m not sold. This all feels overly sentimental to me, almost as if this was some kind of cheesy TV episode of Dawson Creek or a Hallmark channel movie. Going for the heartstring doesn’t have to be that obvious, does it? What do you think? I want to hear from you in the comments!

We Bought a Zoo will be brought to theaters on December 23. Check out the trailer below or click over to Apple to watch the trailer in HD:

This holiday season, acclaimed filmmaker Cameron Crowe (Jerry Maguire, Almost Famous) directs an amazing and true story about a single dad who decides his family needs a fresh start, so he and his two children move to the most unlikely of places: a zoo. With the help of an eclectic staff, and with many misadventures along the way, the family works to return the dilapidated zoo to its former wonder and glory.

  1. Uh… I don’t know. It looks decent but could be extremely schmaltzy.

BTW, has anyone seen those… and her… uh…?

    • Red says:

I googled her name to read about the story, and sitting there right on my google web results were thumbnails. Not the images page, but the actual web search results. Was shocked to say the least.

  2. Red says:

Well, it’s not near as bad as I thought it would be. I’m actually slightly interested now. DAMN YOU HOLLYWOOD AND YOUR BRAIN WASHING WAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That being said, I wonder if Fox saw the Scarlett Johansson nude photo scandal hit the internet this morning, and then scrambled to release this as fast as possible.

    • Castor says:

Hahah now that’s hilarious and probably a lot more fun than this trailer. While I know little about the whole scandal, why have nude pictures of yourself on your phone (or anywhere else for that matter)? I mean, what kind of people do that???

      • Red says:

I have no idea. It’s just asking for them to be revealed somewhere. ESPECIALLY since it’s been put out to most celebrities that hackers have been doing this for quite some time now, stealing a bunch of photos from people’s smart phones back in March.

And plus, she’s Scarlett f’n Johansson. Of all the people in the world that simply don’t need to keep something like that on her phone to – *ahem* – “Grab the attention of somebody”, she’s at the top of the list.

      • The extremely hot kind? I dont know, just saying…

  3. Red says:

Oh, and that poster is just bloody awful. I’ve never understood the need to put “Based on a true story” smack dab in the middle of a poster (or anywhere else on the poster, for that matter).

  4. Andrew says:

Cloying, manipulative, and totally obnoxious by virtue of both characteristics…yep, it’s a Cameron Crowe movie alright!

  5. Nick Prigge says:

Wait, wait, WAIT! How did I fail to realize Cameron Crowe didn’t write this screenplay?! That worries as much as the trailer, especially because I thought you DID need special knowledge to run a zoo. Apparently not!

Although Thomas Haden Church really nailed that zebra line.

    • Castor says:

Thomas Haden Church nails every line sir. Every one of them.

    • Yeah, I think you do need some special training to run a zoo. Unless you’re just the overlord and all your workers have all the knowledge. Still, I have a feeling PETA is going to have a thing or two to say about this film.

Even worse is that the “no special knowledge” thing is undoubtedly supposed to be a metaphor for life, where some special knowledge would probably come in handy!

  6. I’m in. I like Cameron Crowe. I like Matt Damon. I like Scarlet Jo. I like Thomas Hayden Church. I liked Dakota Fanning’s little sister in Super 8. I like Zoos.

    What’s not to like?

Saw it here first, BTW. Thanks Castor!!

  7. Univarn says:

You can definitely see Crowe going back to his old Jerry Maguire stomping grounds with this one (at least in terms of setup), but like many have said before me you can smell the cheese before you even hit the play button. I’m not sure if it’ll resonate with audiences well enough to be the hit he probably could use.

  8. Nikhat says:

Why does the poster say “For Christmas” We Bought A Zoo? The Christmas part is just dumb and it reminds me of those uber-rich people who buy wild animals for entertainment, like Rose Byrne’s character in Bridesmaids. Ugh. Atleast she was funny…

I’m so not a fan of animal-films, and this looks really really sappy. But, maybe for Elle Fanning and Cameron Crowe (he put that boombox in John Cusack’s hands, c’mon!) I might watch it.

  9. Scott says:

I can never look at Scarlett the same again…she means so much to me now!1 HAHAHA

  10. Novroz says:

Thank you for the trailer Cas!!! I am so going to watch this!! schmaltzy or not I don’t really care…a movie that shows love for animals is sold for me. It would be fun to have a zoo of my own (apart from a library of my own). It will not be a cinema movie, but I will definitely hunt down the DVD.

  11. This is sure to be a hit coming out at Christmas. Still can’t decide whether it will be any good or not, but the kids are gonna love it.

  12. Rodrigo says:

Seems like it’ll be hit or miss. But it also seems like I’ve seen this before in other Cameron Crowe films.

Speaking of Crowe, I’ll watch Pearl Jam Twenty on Tuesday.
