2. iluvcinema

Michael Fassbender: "Currently having a Hollywood moment in the sun. One of GQ's Men of the Year, 2011 has been quite kind to him (XMen First Class, A Dangerous Method, Shame, Jane Eyre). 2012 is a bit calmer but he is starring in a blockbuster-in-waiting, Ridley Scott's "Prometheus.""

3. Rich

"Between ‘Django Unchained’ and ‘Great Gatsby,’ not to mention ‘Titanic 3D,’ I gotta go with Leonardo DiCaprio as my first pick."

"I've chosen Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who has a busy year ahead. Along with the Dark Knight Rises, he's starring in Looper, Lincoln, Django Unchained, and Premium Rush. He also has an outside shot at some second-tier awards for 50/50. Finally, he's a rising star, so I'm guessing he may have even more films in 2012 and will definitely be cast in big movies for 2013."

8. Joey Miller

"I pick Woody Harrelson"

9. Scott

Director Steve McQueen

10. Nicholas Robinson

12. Clara Mathews

"After last year’s Star Trek movie (and another in 2012) and this year’s hit with Super 8, JJ Abrams proves that he can bring in big box office. He is also a good story teller."

13. Brian

"With my first selection, I'll willingly fall into the classic fantasy sports trap and build my team (as it were) around a solitary superstar. The Dark Knight is a near lock to bring home 400-500 points so I will make Christian Bale my team captain."Christian Bale GQ

14. Red Georges

"My first selection will be Charlie Theron. She should receive a healthy combination of awards points this year and the box office dollars next year."

15. Ruth Maramis

"Gabriel Byrne… I’ve been wanting to cast this Irish actor for quite some time and since my genre is an Irish gangster flick set in Dublin, I think he’d be perfect for the part of a powerful mafia-like figure."

"Amy Adams. She is so hot her skin sticks to leather furniture, even in the winter. it's so painful that she cries tears which evaporate instantly, because she's so hot"

20. Dan Fogarty

"Boom. Chris Hemsworth is my man then. Between The Avengers and Snow White, he should rack 'em up."

21. Ryan

"With the 21st pick of the draft, I select Steven Spielberg. The guy does get some hate but that’s because he’s already at the top. There is nowhere else to go but down. Plus he’s got Lincoln coming out in 2012 in addition to the by then released Adventures of Tintin and War Horse."Steven Spielberg

22. Max

"I'm finally here and I understand the rules somewhat. I'm going to try my first pick out and see how it goes. I'm going for an A list actor so atleast my foundation will be alright. I select Johnny Depp as my first pick."

33. Matt S

"Viola Davis might not be a big moneymaker in 2012, but so much Oscar talk for her performance in The Help I have to take her."

"And with their second selection, Red Rum Productions chooses Meryl Streep. She's got a couple projects lined up for next year, and will give me another actress competing for plenty of awards this season."

38. Brian

"For the majority of the year I've been saying, "This is the year the Academy rectifies a gross misjustice and awards Gary Oldman with an Oscar nod." I'm going to hold to that statement and pick The Great Chameleon who'll also make bank with DKR."

39. Clara Mathews

Daniel Day Lewis

40. Julian

"My next pick will be Jennifer Lawrence. Coming off her great performance as Mystique in First Class, and with 3 movies coming next year including the much talked about Hunger games movie, i believe she has both the talent and star power to be my leading lady"

41. Nicholas Robinson

"For my 2nd round pick, I choose an actor who has been GROSSLY underrated for his entire career but ever since he starred on one of AMC's new hit dramas has FINALLY been getting some of the recognition he deserves. Coming off of 5 performances in 2011, 3 of which he could possibly ( but knowing the academy he never will) receive nods for, and with yet ANOTHER 5 films coming out in 2012, this man will be sure to play a humongous part in my campaign to the top. I am talking about none other than the star of AMC's Breaking Bad, Bryan Cranston!"

42. Scott

Elizabeth Olsen

43. Joey Miller

"My second pick is director Marc Webb"

44. Dan Heaton

"For my second pick, I choose Kirsten Dunst. Her star is rising once again after Melancholia, which could get her some awards. 45. Andrew Robinson

"I will begin my acting choices with EDWARD NORTON."

Round 3

51. Jordan Winter

"Actress #1: Anna Kendrick, she’s young, she’s ambitious and she is a very talented actress, after seeing her recently in ’50/50′ I decided that she would be my number one pick for actresses."

52. iluvcinema

"For my third round pick, I choose Naomie Harris. This year she will be featured in the latest 007 outing, ‘Skyfall.’ She has the chops and action-oriented pedigree I am looking for in my movie pitch in 2012."

53. Rich

"I’ll take ‘Descendants’ director Alexander Payne, who looks to be a shoo-in."Alexander Payne

"My next pick for the draft is director Martin Scorsese. Hugo is getting rave reviews and I'm hoping for some points from potential Oscar attention. Apart from that, he's just an awesome guy!"Martin Scorsese

55.ScarletSp1der

"I will take Liam Neeson with several releases showing up in 2012, including TDKR, Wrath of the Titans, Taken 2, and Star Wars Ep 1 3D release. However it will be a gamble with The Grey and Battleship."

56. Andrew Robinson

"I'm gonna go ahead and grab up Emma Thompson."

57. Dan Heaton

"My pick is Woody Allen. While Nero Fiddled might not pull in the big box-office numbers of some of the other directors in 2012, I expect that he's going to earn a lot of points during the awards season and maybe even a Best Director Oscar. I also am a big fan of his movies and think he'll fit perfectly with my pitch."

58. Joey Miller

"3rd choice - the beautiful Marion Cotillard, Ill be damned if I dont get any dark knight In this. "

59. Scott

"Set me up with Nick Nolte Please!!"

60. Nicholas Robinson

"My third round pick will be Mireille Enos. She showed great acting ability in AMC's The Killing and with World War Z and Gangster Squad in her 2012 resume i'm sure she'll make a great addition to my team"

61. Julian

"My third pick will be Dakota Fanning. I personally found her performance in the Runaways rather notable, and she happens to have 5 movies coming next year including the sure to be box office winner Twilight. Its a win-win."

62. Clara Mathews

"My 3rd round pick is Helen Mirren"

63. Brian

"With my third selection, I'm going to take a bit of a gamble and pick Michelle Williams, who doesn't have a film slated for 2012 but hopefully will pick up yet another Oscar nomination and maybe get cast in a film or two."

64. Red Georges

"im going with Michael Shannon. Another powerhouse performer that would be wonderful to pair up with Streep."

65. Ruth Maramis

"Tom Hiddleston: Ever since I saw him in Thor, I've been wanting to cast Hiddleston in a leading role (in this case it'll be a co-lead w/ Gabriel) as an antihero. He's not a pretty boy but has the on-screen charisma to carry off this role. "

66. Joel Burman

"My 3rd round pick: Chris Evans"Chris Evans

67. Novroz

"For my 3rd pick, I choose Ewan McGregor. He's a great actor and I like his accent."

"AVENGERS ASSEMBLE!! Scarlett Jo, baby, Scarlett Jo."Scarlett Johansson

71. Ryan

"With the 71st pick of the draft I select Christopher Plummer whose great year will hopefully translate into an even better 2012."

72. Max

"Since my last leading actress was taken two picks ago. I'm going to go with Brad Pitt's co-star in Cogan's Trade...Bella Heathcote. With Cogan and Dark Shadows in the mix I'm sure I'll pull in some BO points."

73. ACPG

"With my third round pick, i'll take Samuel L. Jackson. SamJack has been a staple of mine in previous Hollywood Fantasy Drafts. With the format of this HFD, SamJack's propensity to take pretty much anything he's offered, and a solid slate of movies already on his list I think he's going to be good for a good number of points"

74. Brendan Burke

Matt DillonMatt Dillon

75. Gabe Jackson

"I’d like to take Carey Mulligan as my 3rd pick. With Drive and Shame coming out this year she’s sure to get a lot of buzz for both performances and with The Great Gatsby coming out next year she’s sure to get a lot of points. I’m not sure of the release date of Inside Llewyn Davis though."

Round 4

77. Brendan Burke

Jeff Bridges

78. ACPG

with my fourth pick, I’m going to take advantage of the actor/director loophole and take a gamble on Ben Affleck. I’ve REALLY liked him as a director so far, so I’m counting on him delivering with his 2012 offering…he’ll likely nab some points for the movies he’s in as well

79. Max

"For my next pick I'm going to pick a director. Since my first idea for director was taken right above me. I'm going to go with a dark horse in director Michel Hazanavicius. Having directed 'The Artist' this year and a new project to be released next year, this is the best."

80. Ryan

"With the 80th pick of the draft I select Sandra Bullock who has Gravity coming out and may get some Oscar buzz for Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close."

81. Dan Fogarty

"As tempting as it is to take Mark Ruffalo and complete The Avengers, I'm going to go with Taylor Kitsch and roll the dice on John Carter. He's in Battleship, too, which'll steer some points my way."

82. Castor

With the 82nd pick, I select box office juggernaut Will Smith. Sure he only has one movie in store in 2012, Men in Black III but that’s all he needs to tear up the competition! Will Smith

83. Matt S

"Ugh, well at this point I still need a director, so Terrence Malick. He won't be winning an Oscar, but maybe I can get points from the minor awards!"

Ralph Fiennes

87. Red Georges

"I select Mark Ruffalo to help my team in the box office department, and to play Theron's love interest."

89. Clara Mathews

"My 4th round pick is James McAvoy. That Scottish cutie will be a great addition to my cast."

90. Julian

"I will also be dropping Aaron Johnson for Nicholas hoult. He impressed me in “Skins” and was great in First Class. I didn’t plan to have 2 picks from the same movie this draft, but with the lead role in 2 movies coming out next year including Bryan Singers jack the Giant Killer he has the potential to earn me a lot of points."

91. Nicholas Robinson

"For my fourth round pick, I grab up Javier Bardem. With a Terrence Malick flick and the new James Bond film next year he is sure to get me some serious bank."

93. Joey Miller

"Fourth Choice Jude Law"

94. Dan Heaton

"my next pick is Josh Brolin"

99. iluvcinema

"For my Fourth Round selection, I pick the handsome and talented Idris Elba. To many he will always be Stringer Bell (The Wire) or Dt. John Luther (from Golden Globe nominated Luther). In 2012 he will be making waves in the world of cinema too."

100. Jordan Winter

"Actor #2: Jonah Hill, he's young, out there, and quite funny sometimes. Jonah is guaranteed work after a solid last few years and I expect the little man's profile to continue growing over the next two-to-three years."

Round 5

101. Jordan Winter

"Actress #2: I'm torn between two at the moment, but I will go for Olga Kurylenko. She is surpisingly 32yrs old, despite not looking a day over 21, and since her roles in the Bond films, her profile has really started to climb the Hollywood ranks. I have a feeling that 2012 could be Olga's year."

102. iluvcinema

"For Round 5, I select Olivia Williams. She is one of my favorite actors and fits into my “story” pretty well."

103. Rich

107. Dan Heaton

"My pick is Janet McTeer. I'm counting on the awards buzz for Albert Nobbs to bring some serious points, and having an acclaimed British actress in my cast is never a bad thing. Hopefully the buzz will also bring her more roles in the upcoming year."

"My fifth pick is Sam Worthington"

109. Scott

"I am going to be ice skating when I am on the clock, can I pick Tilda Swinton first"

111. Julian

"Now that i'm up i will pick Ben Whishaw. He gave a fantastic performance in "Perfume" and his role in Skyfall should make me some serious bank. His role in the Wachowskis next movie is a bit of a gamble, but i figure that one should get me some extra points."

115. Ruth Maramis

Ken Branagh for director

116. Joel Burman

118. Matt S

"Is Olivia Wilde still available? I doubt she is but if so she's my pick!"Olivia Wilde

119. Castor

With the 119th pick of the draft, I select Rachel McAdams. Because planet Earth would be ejected of its orbit around the Sun if I didn't select her in every single draft. With The Vow and that Untitled Terrence Malick movie, she should provide some solid scoring power.

120. Dan Fogarty

"I'm going with Amanda Seyfried. For deeply personal reasons."

121. Ryan

"With the 121st pick of the draft I select Guy Pearce...he's an amazing actor and he's going to be in Prometheus and The Wettest County in the World."Guy Pearce

133. Matt S

Again, i’m a little late and unsure of who has been drafted, but John Cusack? he has around six movies next year…

135. Joel Burman

6th Pick Kristen BellKristen Bell

136. Ruth Maramis

"Richard Armitage: He may be an unknown to US audiences but in the UK he's quite famous for his role in Spooks, Robin Hood (as Guy of Gisbourne), and the excellent North & South BBC miniseries. He's cast in The Hobbit which I hope will get him more prominent roles in the future. I have a couple of roles in mind for him, still have to decide which one he'd end up playing."

148. Rich

"I'll take Michael Caine."

149. iluvcinema

150. Jordan Winter

"Actor 6#: Another toss-up between a relative newbie and an established acting vet with over fifty titles under his name, and I’ve gone for the relative newbie in Mr Chris Pine (also known as Mr James T. Kirk). Also I expect ‘This Means War’ to bomb with the critics but still gross upwards of $150m, easy."

Round 7

151. Jordan Winter

"Actress 7#: I had a list of fifteen, which I then proceeded to whittle down to only four, and of those four comes...the beautiful Christina Hendricks. Between her amazing acting ability, 3 projects next year, and possible awards considerations for her performance in Higher Ground, she will be a wonderful (even though final) addition to my cast"

161. Julian

""For my last pick i will go with Angelina Jolie. I known she is not popular with a lot of movie bloggers(hence why i waited till the last round to pick her) but i personally think she is amazing. She will also be collaborating with Ridley Scott next year for a Getrude Bell, and from what i’ve heard her Cleopatra biopic might be coming out next year.

162. Clara Mathews

"For my 7th round pick I want Evan Rachel Wood. She is young, but has the talent to play gritty adult roles"

163. Brian

How To Play

For those of you who are new to this, playing in the HFL is as easy and simple as it gets. In essence, each participant gets to draft (e.g. select) an actor/director when it is their turn. If you would like to get a simple example of a fantasy draft, visit the first edition of our Hollywood Fantasy Draft.

The team with the highest point total at the end of the year wins. League scoring will be applied via a comprehensive set of rules that will seek to determine how “successful” your team of actors/director is throughout the season.

The Rules

  • The season will run from January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2012
  • The draft is tentatively set for 7 rounds
  • You must pick 1 director and 6 actors
  • You must select 3 actors and 3 actresses
  • Selections are made in the comments
  • Time-limit between picks will be one hour
  • If you miss your pick, you will be skipped but you can make your pick anytime once you return
  • Trading picks or selections is allowed
  • The first round will start on Saturday, November 26th at 2PM CT

Pace of Play

The Hollywood Fantasy Draft takes several days to complete. Do not expect this to move at a lightning pace, this is an easygoing game that is supposed to run for several days with folks making their picks when they get a chance. I will do my best to let you know via email/twitter when your pick is coming up.

Nonetheless, if you know you will be away from a computer when your pick comes up, please contact me with your preferred selection and an alternate so we can continue to move forward with the draft.

Grr. My phone wont let me reply directly, but I’m replacing Leary with Temple to even out the genders. REALLY wanted to go with the teenager from The Descendants, but she has no 2012 films lined up (yet)

  2. Ruth says:

My next pick is Kristin Scott Thomas.

    • rtm says:

Thanks for selecting a nice photo of KST, Castor.

I want a lovely but strong woman as Gabriel Byrne’s wife, someone w/ an air of mystery about her. I think the super talented Kristin fits the bill nicely.

      So here’s my team:

Director: Kenneth Branagh (who also has a small cameo)
Actors: Gabriel Byrne, Tom Hiddleston, Ralph Fiennes, Richard Armitage
Actresses: Rebecca Hall, Kristin Scott Thomas, and to comply w/ 3 actresses rule, I’d add Saiorse Ronan as the rebellious daughter of Byrne + Thomas

  3. Novroz says:

    final pick :)

She is witty, she is beautiful, but she also has a sense of mystery, Jennifer Connelly doesn’t have movie next year but she is the perfect image of my imagination for my Caroline (the name of my character)

I love this fourth HFD…I have fixed story so I can pick my cast easily.

      Director: Guillermo Deltoro
Actress: Jennifer Connelly (lead) Sigourney Weaver(supporting)
actors: Martin Freeman, Benedict Cumberbatch, Ewan McGregor (all supporting) Robert Pattison (credited cameo)

looking forward to write my pitch….yaiy

Castor…I Just realised something. with that scoring system goes all the way through 2012, does that mean there will be no hollywood fantasy draft in 2012? If so, I will miss this fun

  5. Castor says:

Time for me to pick a director… I select Mark Andrews, director of Pixar’s Brave.

  6. Fogs says:

Give me Adrianne Palicki. She’s got a few projects coming out. Plus I can have an FNL reunion.

  7. Ryan says:

With the 171st pick of the draft I select Ben Kingsley.

  8. ACPG says:

f**k it, i take Neil Patrick Harris…hopefully he’ll be cast for a few roles

  9. Fogs says:

Yo, Cap. I gotta crash. I know there’s still three picks to go, but I wanted to say thanks. I’m sure we’ll have fun with this the whole year long, but I had fun this week like Mad.

I recognize all the hard work you put in on this thing this week, carefully tending to this thread and whatnot, and it’s not lost on me. I just wanted to say I appreciate it – I had a blast.

    So Cent’anni, huh?!!

To everyone else… get a good headstart! Come March, the A-Team starts kicking ass!

    • Castor says:

Thanks for participating Dan. This was a great draft. I’m really happy how it turned out. Usually, we have 1-3 people who sign up but don’t show up but this time, everyone made their picks.

I will have a wrap up in day or two with a new table of everyone’s team.

  10. Matt S. says:

I could not be more out of ideas, and I have to pick an actress so…. Alice eve?

  11. Clarabela says:

Castor, when and how do we make our movie pitch? In years past, I wrote waaay to much. Also a short story, so this year I will make it short and sweet.

  12. Gabe Jackson says:

I’d like my last pick to go to Sacha Baron Cohen.

  13. Matt S. says:

Haha okay, if she isn’t picked, Blake Lively?

  14. brendan burke says:

I will take Judd Apatow if he still out there.

  15. brendan burke says:

Wait scratch that gimmie David lynch David Lynch

  16. Castor says:

Joel, last remaining pick of the draft before we can close it!

  17. Joey Miller says:

Hey Castor if its okay could i swap Jude Law for Noomi Rapace

  18. Rich says:

Cas I have a question. Since point totals are partially determined by US box office, how long will you keep track of that figure for movies released in December 2012?

  19. Gabe Jackson says:

    Director: Paul Thomas Anderson
Actors: Paul Dano, Sacha Baron Cohen, and Anthony Mackie
Actresses: Rooney Mara, Carey Mulligan, Helene Bonham Carter.
    Can you beat that? nahhhh

  20. Clarabela says:

What is the next step? When do we make our pitches?

  21. Also, is there going to be a separate post to keep track of points awarded?

  22. Matt S. says:

Hey Castor, will you award points for nominations announced this year, or only starting January 1st?

  23. Nicholas says:

Hey Castor, when will you make the post with the running table?
