Terrence Malick to Shoot Two Films Back-to-Back with Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Ryan Gosling, More

After making a total of five films in over three decades, director Terrence Malick has suddenly found the fountain of inspiration. After shooting The Tree of Life, he surprised the movie world by immediately starting to work on his Untitled Romantic Drama starring Ben Affleck and Rachel McAdams. Now that it has wrapped up production earlier this year, Malick is setting his sight not only on one but two projects which will be shot back-to-back and will both star Christian Bale and Cate Blanchett.

The first film, which we reported about two months ago, will be titled Lawless and will star Ryan Gosling with Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, and Haley Bennett in supporting roles. The second movie is named Knight of Cups and this time around Bale will be playing the lead role with Blanchett and Isabel Lucas (Immortals) in the supporting cast. As you would expect, there is no detail whatsoever about what the films will be about although the stories are said to be “separate.”

FilmNation, who made the announcement, will handle distribution of the two films which will be shot back-to-back in 2012. This could be a bit confusing for some of you since Bale, Bennett and Malick were seen shooting something at the Austin City Limits a few weeks ago but The Playlist reported yesterday that this was Bale preparing himself for the role by “working out and finding his character.” One can only admire the actor’s intensity and dedication for his craft.

Back on topic, this is undoubtedly very big news for fans of Terrence Malick. Beyond the excellent cast for both films, we now have four Malick movies to look forward to (don’t forget the IMAX documentary Voyage of Time) including his romantic drama, starring Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams, Javier Bardem, and Rachel Weisz. Oddly enough, that one doesn’t have an official working title while the following two movies do. Nonetheless, there must be something really exciting in the works for the director to have become so prolific in such a sudden manner.

FilmNation Entertainment is continuing their relationship with acclaimed director Terrence Malick (The Tree of Life, The Thin Red Line) and handling international sales and distribution on his next two films. LAWLESS will star Ryan Gosling (Drive, The Ides of March) and boasts a supporting cast that includes Academy Award Winners Christian Bale (The Dark Knight, The Flowers of War), Cate Blanchett (The Hobbit, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) plus Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Social Network) and Haley Bennett (Marley & Me, The Haunting of Molly Hartley).

The second film, KNIGHT OF CUPS, will star Christian Bale with a supporting cast including Cate Blanchett and Isabel Lucas (Immortals, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen). Both films are currently in pre-production and will shoot back-to-back in 2012. Sarah Green (Untitled Terrence Malick Project, The Tree of Life, The New World, Take Shelter, Mud) and Nicolas Gonda (Untitled Terrence Malick Project, The Tree of Life, The New World) will serve as the producers on both films with FilmNation Entertainment handling international sales during this week’s AFM.

  1. I just read about this an hour ago on Indiewire. I posted a comment on it. Man, where does he get his ideas and it looks we’ll have four/five films of his coming out this decade.

  2. Ted S. says:

The more films we get from Malick the better, the man ain’t getting any younger. I wish Kubrick had made more films before he died.

  3. Sarah says:

Who knew Malick was such a prolific work animal? But the film titles sound… bad

  4. Gibbs says:

I couldn’t get through the first 30 minutes of The Tree of Life… does that make me an ignorant hillbilly?

    • Momo says:

I think that had I not been blocked in my seat by people, I would have probably walked out within the first 30 minutes. I am very glad I didn’t in the end, although I certainly do not agree with the seemingly pervasive fanboy criticism that those who didn’t appreciate the movie are ignorant hillbillies or “just don’t understand Malick’s amazing vision OMG OMG!@!11!!”

  5. Green Machine says:

Bale going off and yelling at someone = sorry im method acting

  6. Will says:

They might get shot back-to-back, but it’s gonna take him like 3 years to edit them!

I’ve only seen Thin Red Line when it came out, so this news doesn’t excite me. It is interesting though and sounds more like an April Fool’s joke! I’m excited to watch Tree of Life this coming weekend finally and get an opinion of my own.

  7. Nikhat says:

Ooh this is exciting. I got into Malick’s work this year itself, and it has made quite an impact on me. Though seriously, I hope these films are more like his other stuff…Tree of Life should be left alone.
The cast is a dream. Cate Blanchett is one of my favourite actresses, Ryan Gosling is my sex-god excellent actor person, Christian Bale is fantastic (duh) and Rooney Mara is the future. Everyone else is great too. I personally despise Ben Affleck though, but exceptions can be made.

  8. Scott says:

I am quite excited to see more from this great director!! Malick is picking up speed for sure!

  9. ruth says:

What’s nice about Malick films are that they won’t be remakes or sequels!! So yeah Cas, I’m excited for this, too!
