Amanda Seyfried, Taylor Swift Offered Roles in ‘Les Miserables’

Director Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech) continues to fill the cast for his upcoming musical adaptation of Les Miserables. A month ago, we reported that a number of actresses were testing for the role of Eponine, including Scarlett Johansson, Evan Rachel Wood, Lea Michele and Taylor Swift. It seems like the latter’s pop music success came in handy as Twitch now reports that Swift has been offered the role.

Additionally, the website has learned that Amanda Seyfried has been sent an offer for the role of Cosette. While the story takes place over the course of two decades, it is still a bit odd to think that Anne Hathaway will play Seyfried’s mother, Fantine. Nonetheless, Seyfried is an opera-trained singer and she fits the rumored requirement that the actors can sing on-set without the use of a voice-double. As for Swift, I’m really not convinced that she is right for the role, simply because she has very little acting experience. But maybe Tom Hooper knows something we don’t.

If the two actresses accept their respective offer, they will join an already impressive cast. As reported previously, Hugh Jackman will take on the role of Jean Valjean, Russell Crowe will play Inspector Javert, while Anne Hathaway is set as Fantine, and Eddie Redmayne as Marius. Sacha Baron Cohen rounds up the cast as Monsieur Thenardier.

What do you think? Are you excited for “Les Miserables”?

  1. Taylor Swift? Thank you. Now I won’t be seeing it. Bitch can’t fucking sing!

So much hate! She isn’t that bad.

      What?

I don’t dislike Swift– she sings well enough and she’s pretty affable as far as celebrity personalities for the younger set go– but what? Why would anyone choose Swift over Lea Michele for a role in Les Mis? That’s…that’s just stupid. And the casting thus far has been great. I don’t get it.

No rank animal hatred for Swift here, but the choice, on paper, is poor. We’ve all seen Michele on Glee; I’ve seen her in Fiddler On the Roof, though I admit neither Shprintze nor Chava really match up to much of what she does on Glee in terms of vocal power. Regardless, this kind of makes me slightly wary of the production.

Vocally, Michele would have been the best choice. Her significant Broadway experience makes her a much more dramatic and powerful singer than Swift and thus more fitting of Les Mis. She gets ragged on for her acting on Glee but I think it has more to do with the character she is playing and the show crap storyline itself than her own abilities. Maybe scheduling issues?
I’m very surprised at the casting choice though. Out of all the actresses vying for the role, Swift would have been dead last on my list (and I do like her voice). I expected them to go with the safe choice and land Evan Rachel Wood or some other young actress with proven acting chops.

I took both of my daughters to see TS in concert this summer and was totally impressed! If TS brings the same skills to the movie as she did on the tour, don’t be suprised if she’s nominated for an Oscar. Just saying…

I’m not going to hate on Taylor Swift because I haven’t seen her act but this is a bit disappointing. First Anne Hathaway, then Borat and now Swift? The casting is getting somewhat questionable after a great start.

    • Momo says:

I’m with you on that. Not too sure what to expect now. My excitement for the movie has toned down (but it’s still high).

  3. I’m really excited about this film, but it’s fun to watch the casting as all of us fans start to think “I had a dream this film would be… So different from this hell you’re casting!”

Seriously though, the most important thing is to get folks who can really sing, and I have to admit that I don’t know these ladies well enough to know how well they sing. I’m hoping that they can though!

  4. At the risk of losing my credibility I am going to admit there is one song of Swifts i like…however i am not sure about her acting ability. Amanda i am completely on board with tho

  5. Scott says:

My daughter loves Taylor Swift… Shame I have no opinion

  6. Momo says:

Seriously, still no Madame Thenardier? Where’s HBC when we need her!

  7. iluvcinema says:

No problem with Seyfried, but Swift … I will leave it at that.

  8. Max says:

This movie is almost too star studded. Is there a point where we star worrying that this will become the next ‘nine’ musical?

  9. Stevee says:

Ummmmm…Taylor Swift is an odd choice. I mean, she was awful in Valentine’s Day, and that was an extremely small role. Plus, I find her voice quite whiny…but she can sing.

Hopefully Tom Hooper knows what he is doing. Since he is an Oscar winner and all that (still haven’t gotten over his win over David Fincher from last year…)

  10. Johnny says:

Give her a chance. The Nashville music scene didn’t take her seriously five years ago. But she won over the fans. Look who’s laughing now. Could be the same thing with all this holier-than-thou Broadway crap.

  11. Kristin says:

Seyfried was probably one of the only good singers in the film version of Mamma Mia. I think she’ll do fine. This whole Taylor Swift idea doesn’t make much sense though. I mean, thank God for auto-tune for her sake, but really, will she even look the part, much less be able to act it? I don’t even want to comment on her singing. Ugh.
