First Image and More Details for Judd Apatow’s ‘This Is Forty’

It’s been nearly five years since Judd Apatow’s big hit, Knocked Up but fans will rejoice as he is currently helming This Is Forty, a spinoff which brings back Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann) in their own movie. The story picks up several years after Knocked Up and depicts the married couple’s many tribulations and challenges.

Mann recently told the LA Times, “”It’s the kind of stuff about marriage that you don’t get to see in movies.” Pete’s music label isn’t doing so well and he must rely on Debbie’s dress shop, which employs the comely Desi (Megan Fox) and the awkward Jodi (Charlyne Yi), to help support the family. The actress adds:

“It’s about getting older. What the hell happened? Am I making all the right choices? Is this where I’m supposed to be? Is this it? All of those dreams that you had when you were young, all of the possibilities, when you lock into marriage and kids, do the possibilities dwindle or go away?”

Nothing that hasn’t been done before but add Apatow’s gift with improvised comedy and this is definitely something that could be special. Mann says that Apatow (her husband in real life) is constantly writing as shooting goes, “You have to totally surrender and trust that he will catch you and support you.” The film definitely has a personal connection to her as she relates to her 14-year marriage for the role. “The good moments are me and Judd.” And the bad ones? “Oh, those are all Paul Rudd and his wife,” she joked.

This Is Forty opens December 21st.

  1. I love pretty much anything Apatow does so i’m all for this

  2. Nick Prigge says:

As someone who honestly thought Leslie Mann deserved a nomination for Best Supporting Actress for “Knocked Up” I’m all for this movie.

That unexpected Megan Fox casting decision concerns me a bit, although I suspect Apatow knows what he’s doing there.

  3. Dave Enkosky says:

Sweet. This is the first I’ve heard of this movie. I can’t wait.

I love Bridesmaids, and this seem great. Oh December, 11 months again, I probably will see it next year :0 But thanks for sharing, Castor

Interesting. Spinning off of Knocked Up after Funny People failed to share similar success? I wonder if Apatow’s just personally and artistically invested in the story of Debbie and Pete, or if he’s just trying to call back to characters who were part of something that completely worked as a film. I don’t think Apatow’s that sort of guy, so I imagine that he has a good reason to be revisiting these people and further exploring their lives; I do wonder if this means Hiegel and Rogen cameos at some point or another, but I find that unlikely.

    Either way, I’m on board.
