Forecasting Oscar’s Decisions: 2012 Nomination Predictions
It’s almost time for everybody’s favorite Tuesday of the year. You know, when you have to wake up earlier than you usually do and are too tired to even keep up with the nominations as they appear on the television. Luckily enough for you, if you get yourself acquainted with the list below, you will know most of the nominations already. Part of that is in jest towards my prognosticating ability, but it also hold a good amount of truth as well. Simply put, there shouldn’t bee too many big surprises to come across your screen.
For Best Picture, the biggest question is how many films will be nominated. There seem to be six films that are virtual locks for nomination. I’ve went with eight, adding in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (based mostly off the films recent success with guilds in the past two weeks) and The Tree of Life, which has received a healthy amount of praise from the critic groups. Of the top eight categories, Best Actress might be the most volatile. There are five heavyweights that everybody is favoring, but then you have the likes of Rooney Mara, Charlize Theron, Elizabeth Olsen, and Kirsten Dunst all clinging for a nomination as well. I only have one (Theron) receiving a nomination, but in my eyes, all four are deserving. Having to choose between Fassbender, Oldman, and Shannon was quite possibly the most difficult decision I had to make, though. The boldest pick? Thinking (and hoping) Andy Serkis will receive love for his performance, even if I do believe that should be considered lead performance.
From there, it looks like The Artist will show up in almost every tech category, while Hugo should receive a number of below the line nominations as well. If War Horse is able to sneak in a Best Picture nomination, I’m afraid that would ruin a good amount of the tech nominations as well. The audio categories are probably more open than I can ever remember, which adds some much needed suspense; it’s a shame that couldn’t happen with more categories. As much as I want to be correct with my predictions below, it would also be welcoming to receive some nice surprises as well.
The Academy will announce the Oscar nominations Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m., which most news shows tend to cover.
Check out the lists below, and make sure you let us know who you think will be receiving nominations. Who is your biggest sleeper pick? What “lock” do you think will be eating lunch tomorrow nomination-less?

Nice predictions. I say this because they are very similar to my own. 8)
I think the Andy Serkis nod for Supporting Actor is a bit of a stretch. There are too many people in Hollywood that are very against a motion capture actor getting a nomination. Other actors do not respect it and technicians believe it is them that makes the characters work. But who knows…..
I personally think (oddly enough) that The Artist should receive a nod for Best Sound Editing. I know I know, the film is silent, but just for that one sound effects heavy scene, they should grab a nod. It won’t happen, but it would be fun to see.
I know Serkis is a dangerous pick, but there has been a lot of goodwill sent his way the past couple months. More and more actors are warming up to it.
The sound editing in The Artist was great when it was called upon, but I still wouldn’t put it ahead of the six I have listed (though, I haven’t seen Tintin).
Interesting set of predictions. I hope you are right on the mentions for The Tree of Life. Also, it’s interesting that you think Lead Actress is the most volatile category. I think it is one of the safest with Glenn Close safe for a nomination and Tilda Swinton holding on for the final spot.
And I agree with you Kevyn about The Artist’s sound and I actually think it will get a surprise nomination in Sound Mixing.
For Lead Actress, I say that mainly because there are nine legit contenders that could receive a nomination. Most people are predicting the same five, yes, but a number of things could happen.
Nice picks Red. We almost agree in every category. We have the same eight Best Pic nominees, for instance. One interesting one I would like to point out (because I think we might be alone in these selections), is original score. We match up exactly. I keep seeing John Williams and cringing. Lets hope it turns out as we predict.
Yeah, ours are pretty similar. If War Horse gets a BP nomination, Williams has a pretty good shot at getting two nominations this year.
Nice set of predictions. It seems like there won’t be too many surprises as so many people seem to have similar set of nominations overall. The biggest question I guess is how many movies will be nominated for Best Picture.
I would love it if Serkis got nominated, but for some reason I just don’t think it will happen. I also think that Glenn Close will get in as a career nod.
