New Look At Bilbo Baggins In ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’

A new image of Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) has been released today (via Hero Complex) and it looks like our hero is gathering himself for a crucial struggle. But anyone who has read The Hobbit realizes that the tone of the story is quite lighter than the one for Lord of the Rings so finding the right balance was one of the first main challenge for the filmmakers, according to producer Philippa Boyens:

“The story is very much a children’s story so deciding how to tell this was one of the first things we had to do. Who is the audience? It is very distinctly different, tonally, to Lord of the Rings until the very end and then you begin to see the world of Middle-earth opening up… but, having said that, we felt that it is the same audience [who will come to see the films] and then you start to worry because it is easy to repeat yourself. It is quite a similar journey, you’re going from the Shire to a large, dangerous mountain.”

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey opens on December 14, 2012 followed by The Hobbit: There and Back Again on December 13, 2013.

    I love the image :)
Too much news on The Hobbit makes me mad…because I want to see it even more ;)

I know the hobbit is lighter than lord of the rings, but whoever the audience they are aiming for…I hope they don’t take TOO MUCH liberty in changing the story. Let it be just like the book.

I’d put money on this being the moment when he names Sting.

I can’t help getting excited whenever I see a new production still from The Hobbit. I really hope it lives up to everyone’s high expectations! I think Martin Freeman looks perfect as Bilbo, i’d love to know why Peter Jackson thought only of him for the role. Was it the look, his acting style, (his hairy feet?). What was it?

I don’t know anything of Martin Freeman but so far, he has done nothing to make me doubt that he will be very good in the role of Bilbo.

I know he was really good in Sherlock, so I have no doubt he’ll do great as bilbo. He has this certain awkwardness that fits Bilbo.
I think PJ has great eyes for choosing the actors. I haven’t seen other adaptation movies with better choice of actors than lord of the rings

You never saw the original series of The Office then?

Must be from the scene after he sliced up all those spiders, should look cool on the big screen.
