Producer Jon Landau Says ‘Avatar’ Sequel Not Coming for Another Four Years

With Avatar becoming the highest grossing movie of all-time two years ago, you would think the filmmakers behind the sequel would be in a rush to milk the pig once again. Well think again. Bleeding Cool recently was invited to check out some footage from the upcoming Titanic 3D and had the opportunity to catch up with producer Jon Landau who stated that Avatar 2 won’t come out for another four years.

That’s two years later than a previous report which had the film being released in December 2014. This isn’t all that surprising, given that James Cameron took a 12-year break between Titanic and Avatar. Additionally, the second and third installment will be shot back-to-back so it was getting rather unlikely that it would happen since there is no hint that production is about to start this year. From a positive standpoint, fans should appreciate the fact that Avatar 3 is likely to be released within a year of the second installment.

In any case, no word yet from Fox so take this with a grain of salt.

Maybe Cameron is trying to figure out a way for people to see a 3D film without having to wear glasses. I remember a few years ago he said by 2010 or so we won’t need glasses to watch 3D. Well of course he’s wrong, so maybe that’s why he’s waiting for a more years to release another Avatar film.

Maybe. He certainly waited for the technology to catch up to his vision before he made Avatar so that’s plausible. But more likely, they were too ambitious trying to get such a massive production underway this year. I hear they are still working on the script.

As long as it raises the bar for visual effects again, I’m cool with it.

Not in any particular rush to see 2.

As far as I am concerned, please just let it not ever come… haha. Sorry Roger Ebert, but I did not like Avatar at all :D

  4. Scott says:

I am quite looking forward to this, and putting it back to get it right (if that IS the reason) can only be a good thing.

    :-)

    Thanks Castor

Yeah, I’m in no rush to see Avatar. From a technological standpoint, yes, it’s great. But it lacked so much in story line, that I didn’t care much for the movie. Plus, making a sequel to an epic movie like Avatar is really going to make Cameron have his work cut out for him. Perhaps it will be even BETTER visually, but will he be able to improve upon the first film’s story line? I tend to doubt it.

Oh noooooooo… just what am I going to do with myself??? Mr. Landau, you are ruining my life!!!

    :D :D :D

  7. I think that they have to be careful here. While I’m sure that it will be visually stunning, you do lose something when your sequel is too far removed from the original in terms of years.
