Watch: Trailer and Poster for ‘Detachment’ with Adrien Brody
Tony Kaye’s biggest, most memorable hit to this day is still American History X, and the director is returning to the high school setting one more time with his new drama Detachment. The film stars Adrien Brody as a disillusioned substitute teacher who seems to have just as many problems as his apathetic students. When he inadvertently becomes a role model for the student body, he finds that he is not the only lost soul struggling to find meaning in this world.
The premise certainly doesn’t sound like the most original out there (Half-Nelson anybody?) but the trailer is quite effective at showing that Brody might be giving a truly compelling performance here. The supporting cast is also quite impressive with Marcia Gay Harden, Christina Hendricks, Bryan Cranston, Tim Blake Nelson, Lucy Liu, and James Caan.
Detachment will be available on VOD February 24 and hits theaters March 16.
Director Tony Kaye’s (AMERICAN HISTORY X) long-awaited film DETACHMENT stars Academy Award® winner Adrien Brody as Henry Barthes, a substitute teacher who conveniently avoids any emotional connections by never staying anywhere long enough to form a bond with either his students or colleagues. A lost soul grappling with a troubled past, Henry finds himself at a public school where an apathetic student body has created a frustrated, burned-out administration. Inadvertently becoming a role model to his students, while also bonding with a runaway teen who is just as lost as he is, Henry finds that he’s not alone in a life and death struggle to find beauty in a seemingly vicious and loveless world.

Aw! I’ve missed broody Brody
And we’ve missed you
Definitely worth a VOD purchase.
I will wait for the rental
I wasn’t sure about this from the description, but then I watched the trailer, and as soon as Isiah Whitlock Jr’s voice I was sold. OK, it looks like he probably has a small part but…yeah, I love that guy.
Ah, I meant to write “as soon as I heard Isiah Whitlock Jr’s voice”
Isiah Whitlock has an awesome voice!
i LOVE this cast. yay Lucy Liu!
Ahha yea, long time since I’ve seen Lucy Liu in a movie cast
Brody looks like he’s back in top-form and hopefully Kaye will be able to bring all of that emotion that he did with American History X.
And maybe someone will get their head stomped on a curve?
Adrien Brody as the Pianist is probably my favourite performance of all time. Glad to see he’s getting back on track. I mean he was one of the best parts of Midnight in Paris, but lead roles will be good.
Yea he was terrific in The Pianist, a movie I really feel is quite underrated.
Does sound a bit like Half Nelson for sure. But I have faith in this to be quite good.
Thanks Castor
Looks good….But I still need convincing
This actually looks really good to me. I hope that it at least gets a limited run before it goes on VOD so that it will be eligible for awards at the end of the year.
Brody is a terrific actor. I once thought his performances could save even bad movies (this was proved wrong with that one-man car crash film he was in) but he’s still one of the finest actors out there. It was great seeing him turn up in Midnight In Paris.
