Across The Atlantic: Ninth Edition, 24th February 2012

Every fortnight (that is two weeks in case you are reading this hung-over) I will collect, evaluate and release all the film-tastic news that may or may not have made your radar due to it being UK/European specific. Some of it you may read, the majority of it however will probably leave you scratching feverishly at your skull wondering “Who is this? And why am I reading this balderdash!”

I could write about the BAFTA’s, or the various other award ceremonies that have taken place over the last few weeks, but everybody knows that all eyes will be on the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles this Sunday as the 84th annual Academy Awards ceremony takes place. Will The Artist rule the Academy Award’s, like it did the BAFTA’s? Well, you’ll just have to wait till Sunday to fine out, but until then…

Only Fools and Horses has and always will be a staple of British television and John Leguizamo is being lined up to play Derek ‘Del Boy’ Trotter (Sir David Jason as the classic character, left) in the US remake of the show. [BBC]

Yet another sad day for the British film industry, as the Twickenham film studio has gone into administration and is due to be wound down between now and June. [BBC]

Helena Bonham Carter has been honored with a CBE from the Queen. She follows in the footsteps of her King’s Speech co-star, Colin Firth, who received his honour last year. [BBC]

A cinema in Wandsworth came under fire last week after a human error allowed the trailers for The Devil Inside and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance to be shown before an afternoon screening of Puss in Boots. I wonder if any asked “Daddy, why can’t we watch that instead?[Guardian]

Hadley Freeman talked to the beloved and celebrated British actor Tom Wilkinson about, well, pretty much everything aside from his films. [Guardian]

Michael Fassbender’s world-wind career is destined to continue as he has signed up to yet another role. Irish Myths, currently being written by Ronan Bennett, follows the Ulster cycle from Irish mythology. [TotalFilm]

After taking the Outstanding British Debut gong at the 2012 BAFTA Award’s, Paddy Considine is eyeing up his next project, an adaptation of Jon Hotten’s book The Years of the Locust which is centered around the world of professional body building. [TotalFilm]

Jane Goldman confirmed last week that she won’t unfortunately be writing the script for the X-Men: First Class sequel, but some positive news has arisen this week as Mark Millar has confirmed that the sequel to Kick-Ass will start shooting in the summer. While Goldman nor Vaughan won’t be on-board, it is great to see the sequel going ahead, since the first film was such a resounding breath of fresh air. [TotalFilm]

Why wasn’t Shame or Michael Fassbender for that matter, nominated for any high-profile awards this season? Well according to the film’s director Steve McQueen, it is down to the fact that America is “scared of sex.” [TotalFilm]

Yet another role for Michael Fassbender as his 2012 calendar seems to be filling up very quickly at the moment! This time the actor has confirmed his participation in The Counselor, written by the brilliant Cormac McCarthy and with Ridley Scott on-board as the director; this is definitely one of the films to look out over the next year or so. Forest Whitaker (left, first image) has signed on to play the Archbishop Desmond Tutu (left, second image) in an adaptation of Michael Ashton’s play The Archbishop and the Anti-Christ, which places Tutu in the fictional realm of meeting a bigoted South African mass murderer who seeks redemption. Here’s the second trailer for the promising British horror flick Inbred, which follows a group of delinquent teenagers and their community care workers as they find themselves in an incredibly tight-knit community. [DreadCentral]

Fancy watching a 20ft Daniel Craig? Well, you can at the end of the year as the 23rd Bond film, Skyfall, is scheduled to be released worldwide in the IMAX format. [DigitalSpy]

Steve Coogan is to play the Soho King and adult magnate Paul Raymond in a biopic of his life. Michael Winterbottom is once again due to collaborate with Coogan as he has been lined up to direct the project. [Metro]

David Furnish, the partner of Elton John, has revealed that Justin Timberlake has been chosen to play the artist in an upcoming biopic of the star and that the project will get underway once a suitable director has been found to helm the picture. [Metro]

Despite him taking home the BAFTA Rising Star Award two weeks ago, Adam Deacon (right) has revealed that he received messages from ignorant twitter users describing him as “unworthy” and a “chav” for beating the likes of Chris O’Dowd in winning the Award. [Metro]

    I’m pretty dismayed that there is going to be an American remake of Only Fools and Horses. It just doesn’t compute! John Leguizamo is a fine actor, but really.. no. Just don’t even bother, please!
