First Pictures of the Set of Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Django Unchained’
Quentin Tarantino is gearing up to begin filming of his upcoming film Django Unchained, starring Jamie Foxx as a freed slave-turned-bounty hunter who must return to his plantation to rescue his slave wife Broomhilda (Kerry Washington) from the sadistic Calvin Candie, played by Leonardo DiCaprio.
Actor Garrett Dillahunt (Raising Hope) recently took pictures (via Bleeding Cool) of the Santa Clarita Melody Ranch set which probably looks very familiar to HBO’s Deadwood fans since it’s actually the same set. Tarantino recently told the LA Times, “It’s a blast shooting here. Most other western towns look like dollhouses. This has the complete look. It’s fantastic.”
Check out the picture below. Django Unchained opens December 25th and stars Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Sacha Baron Cohen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and many others.

Ha… isn’t that the Deadwood set? Red building in pic 2 is the Gem Saloon, the building across the street is Farnum’s hotel?
Indeed it is. It’s a beautiful set, no wonder it’s been used so many times
Maybe someday, I will take a tour!
Sweet!
Wow the town looks exactly like how I envisioned it while reading the script. I can’t wait to see the first trailer of the film, still disappointed that QT went with Foxx as Django, I really wanted to see Anthony Mackey in that role. Oh well, in QT I trust so it’s going to be a great film no matter what.
Wow, yea Mackie would have been an awesome pick for Django. At least, it wasn’t Chris Tucker.
Fantastic? hahaha come on it takes more than this to make me stoked for real.
Haha, I was gonna say the same thing. Those are some FANTASTIC shots of…buildings. :\
I hear you can buy some enthusiasm at the grocery store. You should have a go at it!!!
can’t wait. hope QT gets more people interested in Spaghetti Westerns so some of that hard to find stuff can find its way back to my movie collection.
Indeed, maybe even revive the entire genre? Ok I’m too optimistic now
And that’s why Westerns usually don’t do it for me. They all look the same!
(With apologies to those actually looking forward to this).
Yea they all look similar but there is only so many locations where you can shoot a western right?
OHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGOD!!!
It looks the same as every other Western but it’s AMAZING
I’m far too excited!
WILD WILD WEST
Don’t mention the unmentionable! At least, I doubt that there will any steam punk undertones in the visuals ahah
I keep getting more excited, the more I hear about this movie. Extra super dooper bonus points for using the Deadwood set.
HEHE so it is not a purpose built set? It looks cool, I am very much looking forward to this one when it comes!!
Nice new gravatar Scott! Nah there is a bunch of ranch in the area where they have pre-built sets for the studios to use. Folks can even take tours etc…
Hmm, the ‘Deadwood’ set you say? I wonder if that was chosen because of the budget constraints, convenience or just because Quentin believed it fit the bill of the picture…
Well, unless they built a whole entire town in the middle of nowhere, any set they used was previously used by some other production.
Can’t wait for this movie.
As the biggest QT fan on the planet (save for anyone who may be stalking the man – because I am not! You believe that, right?)…anyway, I digress. As the biggest QT fan on the planet, all I can say is YIPPPPPPPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!
Seriously, even just this somewhat generic looking set has me all a-twitter.
Not so interested in this set but can’t wait to see this most of awesome of casts in costume and character!
When I first heard of Django Unchained, I thought it was the sequel to Rango…way off base. Don’t go for westerns usually, will probably be cool to watch anyway with QT as director.
I eagerly clicked on this to see what QT was up to, but alas, I think I’m going to go back to the dueling Snow Whites now….
I am highly anticipating the film, but the buildings aren’t the part I’m most looking forward to.
