Gael Garcia Bernal to Star in Post-Apocalyptic Reboot ‘Zorro Reborn’

Twentieth Century Fox is looking to produce a futuristic reboot of Zorro and they have chosen Gael Garcia Bernal (The Science of Sleep) to star as the masked swordsman. While the classic tale is set in the Spanish colonial era of California, Variety reports that Zorro Reborn will be a revenge tale taking place in a post-apocalyptic wasteland.

No director is attached at this time. Glenn Gers and Lee Shipman & Brian McGreevy wrote the script, which we hope will be good enough that the potentially ridiculous premise will actually make sense on film. Although one wouldn’t think of Bernal as a tentpole lead, he is an excellent actor so we are intrigued to see what he can bring to the role. He will next be seen alongside Will Ferrell in the Spanish-language comedy Casa de mi Padre.

Post apocalyptic Zorro? Those words don’t really go together. So will be Mad Max a la Zorro?

  2. Rodrigo says:

The idea of a post-apocalyptic Zorro makes me skeptical of watching this. But I hope Gael can work it off.

This could go REALLY well or REALLY bad. Considering the last few GGB movies he’s had, I don’t know. It’s going to have to be on who’s going to be attached to the project.

Yea I guess we will have to see. Certainly a perplexing premise but it could work under some specific conditions.

  3. After seeing the trailer for Iron Sky i didn’t think a film could seem any more silly.

    I have been proven wrong

Not really, except it’s a friggin’ mash-up of a story steeped in Spanish colonial times somehow attempting to translate to a post apocalyptic future. That’ll work. I mean, how can it possibly true to both genres? Sheesh! What, the romantic outlaw tale with rapiers and vampires was taken? This has ‘winner’ all over it, huh? Somehow I don’t think Douglas Fairbanks, Tyrone Power, Guy Williams, or Antonio Banderas are worried Gael is going to eclipse them with this film.

  5. i don’t like the idea of a futuristic zorro. but i do love the idea of gael playing one :)

This is kind of ironic because I see Bernal as one of the best picks to play Zorro. Probably even better than Antonio Banderas. It seems as if the regular cast members of Pedro Almodovar films are playing Zorro. Coincidence?
