Jennifer Aniston, Dennis Quaid Join ‘Jackie Brown’ Prequel, ‘Switch’

A couple weeks ago, we got word that Dan Schechter‘s adaptation of Elmore Leonard‘s novel, Switch was making a big step toward shooting in May by adding John Hawkes, Yasiin Bey (a.k.a. Mos Def), and Ty Burrell to its cast. Deadline now reports that Jennifer Aniston and Dennis Quaid have also joined the crime drama.

The story is set 15 years before Leonard’s Rum Punch (which Quentin Tarantino adapted into Jackie Brown) and centers on Ordell Robbie (Bey) and Louis Gara (Hawkes), two ex-cons who kidnap the wife of a wealthy Detroit real-estate developer and hold her for ransom. But when the lowlife husband sees this as an opportunity to get rid of his bombshell wife, she makes a pact with her kidnappers in order to get revenge.

Aniston will take on the role of the wife, Mickey Dawson, while Quaid will play her ungentlemanly developer husband. If you remember Jackie Brown, Ordell and Louis were played by Samuel L. Jackson and Robert de Niro respectively.

On paper, this sounds like an interesting spin-off with an intriguing premise and some solid talent involved. Aniston was surprisingly delicious in Horrible Bosses last year and this certainly is an interesting role for her as she seems be mixing it up a bit after a string of vanilla romantic comedies.

What do you think?

Hopefully this will be decent, but I fear far too much time has passed between JB for them to truly cash in on it. If they make a great film then it shouldn’t matter. I loved JB so I’d love to see what those characters were up to when they were younger.

Hmmmmmmm. I’m not so sure about Mos Def but as much as I loved DeNiro’s work…..Hawkes seems like a good fit for that part. “Jackie Brown” really was a Q.T. movie as much as an Elmore Leonard adaptation so it might be interesting to see if this one stays closer to its roots.

  3. stock just plummeted with the addition of aniston. they had me with the first two castings–mos def and john hawkes. you can’t take aniston seriously. she’s even bad in comedy.

I’ve got a good feeling about this. Anyway, I’ve been on a real Elmore Leonard kick lately, so this’ll just give me another reason to read Switch.

Whoa! I’m surprised that this is the first that I’ve heard about Switch. I’m a huge Jackie Brown fan but I share the concerns that it won’t work out so well. I don’t think Aniston is an interesting actress, so her casting doesn’t excite me. I will say that it’s an intriguing premise and might surprise me. I’ll have to keep my eyes out for a trailer in the future.

    Exciting news!

I am actually really looking forward to ‘Switch’ and think if it’s done right then we’re going to be in for something good. There’s a part of me which is concerned that it’s going to end up like ‘Be Cool’…and if it does I may cry!

I wasn’t a huge fan of ‘Jackie Brown’ the first time I watched it, I think I was still in ‘Pulp Fiction’ mode. But in the subsequent 4 times I’ve watched it I have walked away enjoying it more and more. It’s a film filled with really interesting characters and whilst some of them may not be nice people, it’s hard to look away.

Hopefully they can capture the same style and spirit in the prequel.

Oh and I am all behind any movie where Jennifer Aniston gets kidnapped…
