Michael Bay Will Return to Direct ‘Transformers 4′… And It’s Going To Be a Reboot
After claiming an astonishing $1.1 billion worldwide with Dark of the Moon, it’s no surprise that Paramount is eager to keep the highly lucrative Transformers franchise going despite some reticence from director Michael Bay and star Shia LaBeouf jumping ship.
Speaking with MTV‘s Josh Horowitz (via Collider), producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura announced that Michael Bay would return to direct the fourth installment which will be a reboot of the franchise. “Yeah Michael’s gonna direct and it’ll be releasing in the summer of 2014. We’re excited and I think the challenge there is we really are gonna do a reboot, and what that’s gonna be we don’t even know yet.”
Bay himself then wrote on his blog “I have just concluded a deal with Paramount to do two movies, but it won’t be two ‘Transformers.’ I will first do ‘Pain & Gain’ with Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. Then I will do the next Transformers for release on June 29, 2014.” The director previously said that he was considering leaving the franchise but it seems that the allure of a multi-million dollars payday was too much to overcome.
Elaborating on rebooting the films, Horowitz said: “Well I mean again it’s hybrid. It’s not the way—I’m not involved with Spider-Man but what I perceive Spider-Man to be is a redoing of the whole thing, [Transformers 4] is not. It’s an evolution. There’s still continuity that’s going on, and yet there’ll be a lot of new cast. Whether there’s anybody from the [original] cast, we don’t even know yet. But the truth is, it’s gonna be a whole new story. The characters that would certainly come along would be Optimus and Bumblebee I’m sure.”
At this point, I don’t personally care whether the franchise is going to start anew or not. I don’t think it will hurt to start with a fresh slate given that the last two movies were mediocre at best but rebooting and still bringing back the original director kinds of cancels out the purpose. It certainly will be interesting to see what direction Bay & co will take and who will pick up the torch from LaBeouf. In the meantime, the director is looking to shoot his long-gestating passion project Pain and Gain this April with Dwayne Johnson and Mark Wahlberg.

Apparently not all prayers are answered.
Castor should just close out the comments thread. Yours wins!
cheers, mate!
Haha, I concur. Castor should add upvotes to the comment threads.
Lol I’d love to but seriously, this site is already slow enough without it
What Iba said [roll eyes]
A reboot is pointless because they are bringing back the same hack director to mess everything up. Each movie has been worse than the previous one so far and I expect this trend to continue until they all burn in hell.
Yea it cancels out the point of a reboot in many ways…
Michael Bay, FUCK YOU!!!!
He is floating on mountains of dollar bills. He doesn’t care ahha
All that money… for me to burn!!!!
Hmmm. While I don’t mind the Transformers films – loved the first one, 2nd was ok and the third was better than 2, I feel as though childhood chums have had enough of a battering. Critically. I was just annoyed that the films weren’t so much about the Transformers but the painfully annoying and woeful human characters. If Bay does do a reboot of sorts, make sure the film is actually about the Transformers themselves. More robots, less people!
The first one was decent enough. Hated the second and third ones though. Totally agree most of the issues with the franchise come down with annoyingly weak characters.
hehe I feel a little dead inside now….
Oh Noooooo!!!!!!
Will our culture finally achieve cinematic perfection with this movie? Yes, yes we will.
Nah, the world will end before this is released
It was only inevitable. This thing’s gonna end up like a snake eating its own tail.
As long as people flock to each installment, it’s obviously not going to stop. It’s almost an human experience on an epic scale. How bad can you make it before people actually stop showing up.
Well, we’ll find out the answer to that one in a decade’s time, I’m sure.
after recently watching “Real Steel” and being impressed by the coherent robot smashing action, I just hope Bay can use that film as an example. Minus the annoying kid of course.
Well they got rid of the in-house annoying kid (Shia LaBeouf) so that must be a nice first step for a reboot right?
Am i the only one who doesn’t feel Shia was a major flaw of the movie? The reboot will most likely suck no matter who they get for the lead
I feel lucky to have avoided the Transformers franchise entirely so far.
Good on you ah. The first one is decent though you should stop there if you give it a watch.
I haven’t seen any of these, but I do think that you should have change the title of this post to read “… And it’s going to be a ROBOT REBOOT.”
