Must Watch: Theatrical Trailer For ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’

Sony Pictures has released the full theatrical trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man, Marc Webb’s reboot of the superhero franchise that will star Andrew Garfield as your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. While one has to question why the studio would release a trailer at 12AM Pacific Time — most of the country is already asleep — this preview is a huge improvement over last summer’s teeny-boppish teaser.

For one, we get a much better feel of what the story will be about: The budding romance between Peter Parker (Garfield) and Gwen Stacey (Emma Stone), George Stacey’s antagonistic feelings toward Spider-Man and the quick glimpses of the Lizard coming into being and wreaking havoc. The special effects look great and so do the action set-pieces which are quite reminiscent of the ones we saw in Sam Raimi’s movies. Finally, the cast is first-rate with the likes of Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen, Sally Field, Irrfan Khan, and Denis Leary having supporting roles in the film.

Overall, I’m quite a bit more excited about the movie than I was before I saw this trailer. Check it out below and let us know what you think! The Amazing Spider-Man hits theaters on July 4th.

One of the world’s most popular characters is back on the big screen as a new chapter in the Spider-Man legacy is revealed in The Amazing Spider-Man. Focusing on an untold story that tells a different side of the Peter Parker story, the new film stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, Irrfan Khan, with Martin Sheen and Sally Field. The film is directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay written by James Vanderbilt, based on the Marvel Comic Book by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Laura Ziskin, Avi Arad, and Matt Tolmach are producing the film in association with Marvel Entertainment for Columbia Pictures, which will open in theaters everywhere in 3D on July 3, 2012.

The Amazing Spider-Man is the story of Peter Parker (Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Sheen) and Aunt May (Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents’ disappearance – leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr. Curt Connors (Ifans), his father’s former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors’ alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.

I like it. I actually do. Would have liked seeing more of The Lizard, but hey, it’s a pretty good trailer.

At least it didn’t have any of that “first person viewpoint” stuff from the other trailer…..

  2. Nikhat says:

I do like how vivid this looks. And the suit’s a bit more sexier, and well a bit more ridiculous too. Heh I like all the suit-humour. Also my man, Andrew, looks gorgeous and I love Emma Stone.
I am finally properly excited! Yesssss :D

  3. Dave Enkosky says:

I’ll see this for Andrew Garfield.

  4. Scott says:

I am starting to get bored with saying this… but like the Avengers trailer, this does nothign for me at all…

    God I am grumpy

  5. Fogs says:

    Huh.

I think this is the first time that it occured to me that I might actually LIKE this movie. LOL

It looked good. Dennis Leary as Cptain Stacy? Yes please.

    Emma looks great blonde.

  6. Kristin says:

Andrew Garfield’s really well cast. I’m still ticked about them remaking this without finishing the last series, but I think I’m gonna have to see this. It almost looks too good (from this trailer) not to.

    • Castor says:

They could probably have done just as well with Tobey Maguire and Sam Raimi but yea, it’s over. Not sure if there is enough of the new to make people forget about earlier version.

  7. Red Georges says:

I’ve been looking forward to this more than most, and this trailer only reassures me that this might actually be an exciting movie to watch, and not the cash grab that most people think it is.

  8. ruth says:

I’m excited for this ’cause I adore Garfield, plus given what happened at Comic-con last year, I just had to see this one on opening weekend! :)

  9. Green Machine says:

This looks better than the Avengers, to me. Looking forward to this now but I still think it is still way too soon to reboot the franchise

  10. Gibbs says:

The costume look like shit and is it me or did the effects took a step backward?

  11. Seveo says:

Where is Lizard’s snout?? It looks good, but he doesn;t look anything like the comic’s lizard… I am totally in though

  12. This actually might be really good. I hope they absolutely improve everything so I can forget that last one. Sam Raimi still owes me $7 of the $9 I spent on that film. The $2 was for Bruce Campbell’s cameo.

  13. Russell_Oz says:

I am pumped about this one! I think the trailer looks good, love that the villain is The Lizard this time round, and I really enjoyed the injection of humour too. The only thing that concerns me is the 3D. I hope that when it’s released there will be 2D screenings instead.

    • Julio I says:

There are almost always 2D screenings of 3D movies. Not only because not everyone is willing to pay the premium, but because 3d is actually problematic for various individuals (some get headaches, some can’t see it at all). So you should be good to go! :)

      • Russell_Oz says:

Excellent news! Thanks for the heads up. I didn’t think about those who would be unable to watch it due to eye problems. Feeling much better about it now :)

    • Castor says:

Yea I wouldn’t worry about not finding 2D, there is usually just as 2D and 3D showings for most movies.

  14. Dan says:

…I really like that poster. Impressive.

  15. Jaina says:

I really like the look of this. Andrew Garfield looks like a better Spidey – he’s got a bit more of a spine. Emma Stone looks stunning and the rest of the cast – Dennis Leary, Sally Field, Rhys Ifans, everyone… it looks like it’s all come together really well.

What I’m unsure about is whether this will still tread old ground. They’re making a bit effort to say this is the “untold” story… but really, how much will be new?

    • Castor says:

Ahaha so you are saying Tobey Maguire was a pussy? :P Fair enough. I share your concerns for whether it’s going to be deja vu all over again. Let’s hope there is enough of a twist that it won’t be too much like a retread.

  16. Andrew says:

There’s a lot of good stuff here– Garfield and Stone look like they click together, the costume and the web-slinging both look great, and the irreverence of the character is in full force. And it’s nice to see more of Ifans and Leary here, since they’re both playing (respectively) the villain and the heavy here. If the film veers very far away from the Twilight-driven sense of somberness portrayed by the first trailer, I could well be pleased with it.

I’m still concerned about the idea of Parker becoming Spider-Man tying into fate and destiny, because that’s not Spider-Man at all, and frankly the Lizard himself looks terrible. Maybe he’ll look better on the big screen in the cut that makes it to theaters, but man, for the Lizard to look that bad would be pretty deflating.

    • Castor says:

Yea I don’t really get why they are trying to make it look like Peter Parker was “destined” to be a superhero since his childhood. It doesn’t make sense whatsoever since he gets randomly bitten by a spider. In any case, the movie should shed more light on that but yea I get your concerns.

  17. iluvcinema says:

I personally had been putting off looking at any of the promotional stuff, until now. I guess Sony realized they had to come correct or not at all.

In spite of my liking Andrew Garfield, I am still on the fence about seeing it in the theater. Which is not saying much because I had not seen any of the Raimi SpiderMan series in the theater either.

    • Castor says:

It’s still a few months away so I’m sure Sony will have plenty more marketing to sway you to see it in the theater. And if you don’t, then we will let you know whether it’s worth it ahah ;)
