Russell Crowe, Liev Schreiber, Alex Proyas, David Michôd & More to Direct ‘Sydney Unplugged’

With the success of anthology films such as Paris, je t’aime and New York, I Love You, plans for similar “City of Love” movies in various cities such as Shanghai, Jerusalem and Rio de Janeiro have surfaced over the past few years. Add one more city where celebrities will congregate to romance each other as THR reports that Sydney Unplugged will be composed to 12 shorts directed by famed Australian actors and directors Anthony LaPaglia, Toni Collette, Liev Schreiber, Russell Crowe, Alex Proyas, David Michôd, Ivan Sen, John Curran, Kieran Darcy-Smith, Rachel Ward, and Ray Lawrence.

While anthology movies are always uneven due to the sheer number of moving parts, this lineup of filmmakers certainly is impressive. I’m most intrigued to see what Russell Crowe can do behind the camera as well as what David Michôd is going to bring to the table after his masterful work in Animal Kingdom.

It also doesn’t hurt that Sidney is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. I was quite fond of Paris, je t’aime (not so much of New York, I Love You) so I will keep my eyes peeled on this. Filming is set to begin in Sydney in the second half of 2012.

Were you a fan of ‘Paris, je t’aime’ and/or ‘New York, I Love You’? What city should be next for the ‘City of Love’ project?

If Michod is directing a short, I’m in. Animal Kingdom was one of my favorite movies of the past few years.

  2. This one definitely has some potential considering that it’s helmed by Aussie filmmakers rather than a bunch of big names. Let’s hope it’s not New York, I Love You. That movie sucked except for a few shorts.

Generally I’m meh about this kind of ensemble-cast films as Hollywood has butchered the concept way too many times w/ New York I Love You, New Year’s Eve, etc. But like you said Cas, I’m intrigued by the lineup and to see what Russie can do behind the camera.

Yea the New Year’s Eve, Valentine’s Day are almost making me think twice ahah but I don’t even put them in the same category because these are distinct shorts.

Despite all of the bad talk, I’m still interested in eventually catching up with NYI♥Y. I loved Paris je t’aime, so I feel compelled to…just maybe not any time soon.

London seems a logical choice, as does Tokyo. Nothing against the filmmakers listed, but it seems a bad/narrow idea to limit it to native/local directors – can you imagine Paris je t’aime without the contributions of the Coens, Payne, Tykwer, et al?
