‘The Artist’ Dominates BAFTAs with Seven Awards Including Best Picture

The Orange British Academy Film Awards were handed out tonight at the Royal Opera House in London and cemented The Artist as a virtual lock to take most of the Oscars home when the Academy Awards ceremony comes around two weeks from now. The French silent film nearly swept every category, claiming awards for Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Original Screenplay, Best Music, Best Cinematography, and Best Costume Design.

At this point, very few surprises are expected on Oscar night with Octavia Spencer and Christopher Plummer also locked in for their respective Best Supporting Actors awards. Meryl Streep took home Best Actress for her performance in The Iron Lady but could be spoiled by Viola Davis (The Help) two weeks from now. Similarly, George Clooney and Jean Dujardin are in a dead-heat race to win Best Actor but with a SAG Award and a BAFTA win, the latter could well be the favorite at this point.

Check out the full list of BAFTA winners below. The Academy Awards ceremony will take place on February 26th.

    Backlash against The Artist coming in… 3… 2… 1…

You know it’s coming, even though it’s a great film.

  2. Megan says:

I finally saw The Artist a few days ago and really enjoyed it. It’s well-crafted, well-acted and crowd-pleasing. I’m perfectly fine with it taking home the Oscar because it’s fully deserving.

  3. Novroz says:

Congratulation to all the winner :)

I will see them when they arrive here..,or at least the DVD. Cinema hasnt been kind latelx

  4. Jim Turnbull says:

Please let this be a precursor for the Oscars, and we’ll forget all about Bridesmaids picking up 2 nominations…

  5. Scott says:

I am pretty gutted I missed it all. I was busy doing other things. Yeay for The Artist though!!

  6. Dan says:

…I switched this on at 10.45pm just as The Artist was announced as the winner. Not too fussed that I missed the show – Stephen Fry can be very funny but his BAFTA presenting feels like a corporate convention with a vaguely interesting but far too cultured speaker showing off with pompousness not charm. We seemingly go from one British extreme (the working-class-made-good Ricky Gervais) to the other end of the spectrum (Stephen Fry – the upper class English gent).

  7. Jaina says:

I kinda love watching the BAFTA ceremony. Why? Everything’s to the point. There’s no meandering and it’s done in hours! Stephen Fry’s a good host though I did want him to shut it at a couple of points. But … all in all, thought the awards went to the right people and films and am fully expecting the Oscars to get it all very wrong.

  8. Nice to see ‘Rango,’ ‘Tyrannosaur’ and ‘The Skin I Live In’ get some awards season love. While, it was nice to see a shock for once in the ‘Rising Star’ category with Adam Deacon beating out Hiddleston and O’Dowd to take home the award (then again it is voted for by the public and Deacon is quite big in the 16-21 demographic due to ‘Kidult/Adulthood’).

  9. ruth says:

Yay for The Artist! Glad to see John Hurt being honored as well. I have no idea who this Adam Deacon is, but he beat out Thor AND Loki?? [raises hands]

  10. I’m hoping for a Dujardin win, but every time I go to predict it I get this sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach that says Clooney is going to find a way to steal this away from him. I hope I’m wrong though!
