Watch: First Trailer for ‘The Bourne Legacy’ with Jeremy Renner

Universal Pictures has debuted the first trailer for Tony Gilroy’s The Bourne Legacy, starring Jeremy Renner, Rachel Weisz and Edward Norton and it’s very much what you would expect from a Bourne spinoff. The first 65 seconds focus on the idea that “there was never just one” CIA assassin, but rather a whole team of them. We do get glimpses of Renner kicking ass near the end of the preview but this is very much a teaser that doesn’t let on much in the way of plot.

Overall, I’m eager to see whether Gilroy and Renner can pick up the torch from Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon. So far, it’s looks fairly promising. It’s also really nice to Ed Norton in there. What do you think? Watch the trailer below or click over to Apple to see it in HD.

The film also stars Albert Finney, Stacy Keach, Oscar Isaac, Joan Allen, David Strathairn, and Scott Glenn. The Bourne Legacy opens August 3rd.

The narrative architect behind the Bourne film series, Tony Gilroy, takes the helm in the next chapter of the hugely popular espionage franchise that has earned almost $1 billion at the global box office: The Bourne Legacy. The writer/director expands the Bourne universe created by Robert Ludlum with an original story that introduces us to a new hero (Jeremy Renner) whose life-or-death stakes have been triggered by the events of the first three films.

For The Bourne Legacy, Renner joins fellow series newcomers Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton, Stacy Keach and Oscar Isaac, while franchise veterans Albert Finney, Joan Allen, David Strathairn and Scott Glenn reprise their roles.

I had no idea ed nortion was in this! Nice trailer and excited about Renner in the lead role

  2. Red Georges says:

Pretty awesome trailer. Doesn’t reveal the plot whatsoever, but yet sets up the movie beautifully.

The trailer definitely does not give anything away – just a high level outline of what we can expect. It’s sure to be a tense, action packed film.

Despite this I have not any of the previous installments of the franchise in a movie theater, rather, I have opted for home video. It all depends really if I will fork out of pocket to see this one.

  4. Wow, that does look good. Plus, not giving much away. Even better.

I haven’t actually seen any of these films, but this looks good. I guess that’s why the prospect of Edward Norton being here gives me the most joy, though I have started to really like Jeremy Renner. Also, yet another series that is going on my watchlist :/

yeah…that looks all kinds of cool in my opinion. Big Renner fan and looking forward to him carrying this franchise forward.

Yea Renner is a great fit for this role. I wasn’t too excited to hear that they would go on without Matt Damon but getting Renner to star was a coup.

I had no idea Norton was even in this one! I’m still on the fence but who knows I might end up liking it. That poster is pretty cool.

I am surprisingly not in hate with this trailer. I remain cautiously optimistic. This has the potential to be good, I’m bewildered to say.

As for the visual aesthetic, I really, really hope Gilroy maintains the style of Greengrass. For every 10 haters of the shaky cam, hand-heldness, there’s one of Me, who LOVED it. So, to maintain consistency and kickassery, I hope it’s less Doug Liman and more Greengrass [not to diss Liman, mind].

Also glad to see recurring BOURNE faces. A nice way to keep everything in the same ‘reality’. Universal, don’t make me disappointed!

  9. Ronan says:

Love that trailer. If the film builds on the trailer it could be good. I think Jeremy Renner is the new Matt Damon. Thanks for this Castor!

  10. Andrew says:

I think Renner’s got this down. He looks great in the limited footage on display here, and if nothing else history’s proven that he can bring the goods in roles of this category. So that’s exciting. As to the rest I’m pretty thrilled at how carefully they’re trying to maintain continuity in casting here, which suggests a greater dedication to maintaining overall continuity in the film itself. (To me anyways.) So far so good.

    • Castor says:

Yep, definitely reassuring to see all the old faces back in their roles. It lets everyone know this is still a Bourne movie despite the change in leading man.

  11. Matt Damon out. Check. Jeremy Renner in. Check. The Bourne aspect covered? Check. Revealing little of the film’s narrative. Check. I wasn’t particularly bothered about this film before, but I am now.

  12. Tobey Maguire is out of Spiderman. Matt Damon is out of Bourne. Should I be concerned that I may be getting too old to start my new life as a superhero?

  13. Matt Stewart says:

Hey Castor, when are you going to start the scoreboards for this year’s fantasy competition? :D

    • Castor says:

It’s been started a couple weeks ago. I need to update that later today and I will leave a banner in the sidebar so it’s easy to find. Thanks for the reminder :D

  14. Fogs says:

    A) This looks good, I can’t wait. Great cast, loved the first three, its an easy jump into a spinoff like this, so I’m totally into it.

    B) POINTS BABY!!!

  15. Dan says:

I’m so glad Hollywood has finally realized it needs to concentrate on original stories! :(

  16. I like the whole look of that trailer, especially the beginning. Glad that Renner is playing another test subject instead of Jason Bourne.

  17. Kristin says:

I love the tagline of “There was never just one,” and I think if they were going to hand over a “legacy” of sorts to the Bourne series, that Renner would capably fill the shoes. Personally, I was ticked that they’re putting a new lead into this already great series with Damon, but at least it’s correctly titled “Bourne Legacy.” The teaser trailer actually got me excited, so I’m starting to shift my viewpoint that it will be worthwhile to see.

And also, it was good to see Edward Norton in there.
