Watch: Koyaanisqatsi at 1552% Speed

The 1982 film Koyaanisqatsi remains one of the most peculiar movies ever made. Devoid of any plot or dialogue whatsoever, it is merely composed of beautifully photographed scenes of life across the United States juxtaposed with haunting music from Phillip Glass. Director Godfrey Reggio once explained the lack of dialogue by stating “it’s not for lack of love of the language that these films have no words. It’s because, from my point of view, our language is in a state of vast humiliation. It no longer describes the world in which we live.”

Wyatt Hodgson had the nifty idea of speeding up the film by 1552%, making for an interesting watch and highlighting the breakneck speed of our world. Have a look below and let us know what you think!

this to me highlights an interesting realm of art, that is making something of artistic merit, and or merit appart from the original creation, from some pre-existing art. Both Koyaanisqatsi and this are wonderful, and in very different ways. Being who I am, I came to Koyaanisqatsi through Philip Glass, but I enjoyed this, a lot… it’s like being shown a different view within a painting.

    I made this a while ago, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2udg-PQRSY&list=UUBUm1632RSe6Tc2dtqNUxFA&index=4&feature=plcp

… using Holst’s Planets. It’s the same idea, taking art to make art… possibly why I like this so much. But then again, in the same way as my piece ‘Earth’ divides people, I’m sure this will too lol

  2. Man, it’s been years since I’ve seen that film. Awesome movie. The only thing about the clip I didn’t like is the music. I wanted Phillip Glass’ music which would’ve made more sense.

Pretty awesome experience, especially if you seen the original at normal speed. Thanks.

  4. Cool idea. I love this film and it’s curious to see it sped up. I imagine some viewers might enjoy it more are this speed. Not a fan of the music chosen though. I think one of the Glass pieces from the film would have worked fine.

Wow. Very interesting. I’m quite a fan of the original. But yeah, I thought this was also pretty cool. I like that the beautiful, hypnotic imagery was made even more abstract.

HAHA Brilliant!! I can now say I have seen it!! Tyler keeps banging on about the film… CHECK

  7. Now I want someone to make one slowed down to .1552 speed.

  8. I really love Koyaanisqatsi, such an extraordinary film, and I enjoyed this video. I don’t want to sound like a broken record, but I do wish they used Glass’ music.
