News Team, Assemble! Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, Paul Rudd to Return in ‘Anchorman 2′

It’s no secret that Will Ferrell, writer/director Adam McKay and many of the folks behind Anchorman worked extremely hard behind-the-scenes to get a sequel to the awesomely funny Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy greenlighted. However, many people were disappointed when Paramount basically nipped the project in the bud two years ago. Comedies generally don’t do well financially outside of their home markets so it was hard for the studio to justify a big budget, given that everyone on the cast had become huge stars in their own rights since the first movie.

Well… people of the world, rejoice! Yesterday evening, Ron Burgundy himself appeared on Conan and after much antics, announced that Paramount had just greenlighted the sequel, with Judd Apatow producing and Ferrell, Steve Carell and Paul Rudd returning to the cast. There is no word yet on whether David Koechner, Christina Applegate and Fred Willard will also return but let’s hope so. McKay will return to write and direct the film, which will begin production in February 2013.

I’m beyond thrilled that the sequel is finally moving forward. Anchorman is one of my favorite comedies of all-time and I can’t wait to see what they come up with this time. There were also word recently that Ferrell and McKay were planning a sequel to Step Brothers so let’s keep our fingers crossed for that.

I need to see the first one again. At the time I originally tried to watch it, I didn’t make it through. I also didn’t really appreciate Will’s dry humor, but he’s since grown on me. I’m one of the few who kind of dig Land of the Lost. He’s a strange bird all right, but I think I could go back and re-visit Burgandy.

I would argue that no movie in the aughts was more quotable than Anchorman. Pretty excited to see what they do with a sequel.

I would also argue that Anchorman is the most quotable movie of its period; I’d go so far as to say the most iconic. It’s a true comedy classic. And while I’m usually wary of going back to the well on films like this, it’s been long enough that I don’t mind so much– plus the people involved are brilliant.

So basically I’m excited for this.

Most sequel announcements leave me rolling my eyes, but this one is different. I’m going to go out and buy myself a new suit.

  6. YAY!!! Ron is coming back with Brian and my favorite character, Brick, my sweet Brick.

As long as Champ is around and another anchorman rumble happening. You bet your ass I will be there.

  7. Wow, this burrito is delicious, but it is filling.

    I’m torn.

I love Anchorman, complete classic, one of the greatest comedies ever. Sheer brilliance, definitely Ferrell’s best effort. So I’d love to see them tap into that magic again and serve up some more awesomeness.

That said, there’s always a risk that a sequel will suck and tarnish the original. It’s happened many times.

So let’s just say Im cautiously optimistic.

Like they say in the movie – 60% of the time, it works all the time.

Yea, it’s definitely a really tough task to surpass a comedy classic like this. But on the bright side, it’s been 8 years so McKay, Ferrell and company had plenty of time to work on it. Plus, it will be fun to see everyone back!

I exploded when I heard this news, I’m literally dead right now. I hope that the rest of the cast sign on as well, though the three that have signed on really stole the first one… but David Koechner, Christina Applegate and Fred Willard are too amazing… and Vince Vaughn…

    YEY!

  9. Dan says:

This is great news. Pity we’ve got a long wait until it arrives but at least it is on its way.

  10. Pete says:

Let’s hope they bottle lightning twice.

  11. Appreciate the information. Extremely helpful
