Across The Atlantic: Thirteenth Edition, 27th April 2012

Yesterday The Avengers hit British shores and after catching the first screening of the day I can honestly say that I really, really enjoyed it. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not perfect, but it’s a movie made by a comic-book aficionado for the fans. Now the attention turns to Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Rises, which is now just under three months away from release.

A three month long season celebrating the genius of Alfred Hitchcock will take place at the British Film Institute this summer. [BBC]

Three weeks ago we got the fantastic first trailer for Ken Loach’s film The Angels’ Share and last week found out that the film will battle it out for the Palme d’Or at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. [BBC]

What’s It All About has optioned the memoirs of the former Times Newspaper Editor Harold Evans. Evans had a well-publicised battle with Rupert Murdoch after the magnate took over the newspaper in 1981. [Guardian]

Another twist in the pay-TV saga in the United Kingdom has seen the industry regulator Ofcom come out and announce that BSkyB’s domination over pay-per-view television should be broken. [Guardian]

While he’s in London for the Sundance Film and Music festival, Robert Redford has been keeping up with the latest developments of the Leveson Inquiry into Press Standards, which saw Rupert Murdoch take the stand yesterday. [Independent]

An interesting little Skyfall titbit here, as Sam Mendes has recently said that he was initially skeptical of Daniel Craig’s casting as the suave British agent. [TotalFilm]

It seems insanity and genius go hand-in-hand, well that seems to be case for one Lars von Trier, who has revealed that he intends to film two separate chapters for his upcoming film Nymphomaniac, and that he also intends to make both hardcore and softcore versions of these chapters. [BleedingCool]

There’s a trailer for Kieron Hawkes’ new revenge-thriller Piggy, where a young man is drawn into the world of retribution after his brother is murdered. [TheSun]

Inbetweeners star James Buckley has landed his first significant movie role in The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman. Shia LaBeouf and Melissa Leo are also set to star in the film. [TheSun]

    Nice selections of news here Jordan, thanks. Well, I hadn’t heard of McDonagh’s ‘Seven Psychopaths’ but I’m intrigued now!

    That’s interesting that Sam Mendes was initially skeptical of Daniel Craig’s casting as Bond. I was too but he definitely proved me wrong.
