Exciting lineup announced for 2012 Cannes Film Festival

Officials from the Cannes Film Festival have announced the official lineup for the 2012 festival that will take place next month in France, and it’s filled to the brim with directorial talent that has emerged in the past decade. As previously announced, Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom will kick things off on opening night. After that will be an In Competition selection that features more American films than usual, but with just one look at the films collected here, you can’t place any blame on the officials for going after unproven work.

For me, leading the way for films vying for the top prize is Jacques Audiard’s Rust and Bone. Starring Marion Cotillard, this is Audiard’s follow-up to A Prophet, which won the Jury Grand Prize three years ago. There are some big name actors showing off their talents her as well. Brad Pitt is teaming up with Andrew Dominik once again for Killing Them Softly (formerly Cogan’s Trade), previously giving us The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, in which this time around Pitt plays a mob enforcer. Robert Pattinson and Juliette Binoche are two of the bigger names in a pretty stacked ensemble cast for David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis, which had another trailer debut today.

Pattinson’s Twilight partner-in-disgusting-and-dangerous-for-your-eyes-romance Kristen Stewart is heading to Cannes as well, starring in the adaptation of On the Road. Meanwhile Tom Hardy, Shia LeBeouf, Gary Oldman, and Jessica Chastain among others star in John Hillcoat’s Lawless, which was previously titled The Wettest County. Hillcoat’s previous two films have been The Road and The Proposition, so this is definitely one to keep an eye out for. Zach Efron’s The Paperboy, helmed by Precious director Lee Daniels, is also making its debut. The list of actors here might cause hesitation for some, but they are all being lead by established directors that have promising futures.

Of all the titles, the biggest and most welcome surprise is Cristian Mungiu’s newest film, Beyond the Hills. Mungiu wrote and directed the outstanding 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 days (won the Palme d’Or five years ago), so I’m trilled what he brings to the table next. The story once again focuses on the friendship of two young women, but it sounds like the viewpoint will be from a completely different angle. Three other big international names of note are in the competition section as well. Michael Haneke follows up The White Ribbon (another top prize winner, three years ago) with Love (Amour) and Abbas Kiarostami follows up Certified Copy with Like Someone in Love. Gomorrah took the festival by storm four years ago, and director Matteo Garrone returns with Reality.

As for the movies not competing for the Palme d’Or, this is where we find more international fare and will likely uncover the festival’s biggest surprises. One film that does stick out, however, is Sundance favorite Beasts of the Southern Wild. I highly question whether the movie will ever catch on with mainstream America, but should fit right in at Cannes. Notably missing from the festival is anything by Terrence Malick, Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master, and Derek Cianfrance’s The Place Beyond the Pines, which teams him up again with Blue Valentine star Ryan Gosling.

Cannes will run from May 16 to the 27th.

The In Competition stuff alone is blowing my mind. New Garrone? New Kiarostami? Rust and Bone? Cosmpolis? Moonrise Kingdom? And more?! That’s to say nothing of Beasts, which got a glowing review at Badass Digest.

    In short…wish I was there.

  2. I love the list of what is going to play for competition yet the big surprise for me is a new Bernardo Bertolucci film playing. Out of competition as well. I wasn’t even sure if he was going to have a new film out. This just makes things exciting.

They better bring Lars von Trier back for next year’s Cannes. They need him. After all, he puts asses in the seats.

    • Red Georges says:

Interesting. Somehow Bertolucci’s name didn’t scream out at me, but looking at his filmography, I can’t believe I didn’t recognize his name. Yet another intriguing film.

  3. Dave Enkosky says:

So much stuff I wanna see–especially the Cronenberg and Dominik pictures.

  4. I’m curious to see how Efron fares in the Paperboy. I liked him in Me & Orson Welles, but it wasn’t a particularly difficult role. Curious to see whether he has the range for edgier fare. Btw it have a distributor already?

And i was kind of hoping to see The East on the list. According to Skarsgards imdb that should be released this year, but there’s been almost no news on it for a while :(

    • Red Georges says:

It doesn’t look like Paperboy has one yet. It has one listed on IMDB, but says “all media” after that, so I’m not too sure what that means, especially considering the company mostly distributes in Canada. I’m sure that after Cannes, it will get a big dealer. Lionsgate stepped up for Precious, and now has all the money in the world to big up a movie or two for the end of the year, because as of now they have a bunch of films sound like straight-to-DVD.

  5. Pete says:

So much great stuff. I don’t know where to start. Cosmopolis lloks mental, I’m intrigued about The Paperboy. Can’t wait for the reunion of Pitt and Dominik. The documentary on the Central Park 5 has me interested. Wish I could be there…

  6. iluvcinema says:

Thought Malick would make it I guess not.…I am curious about The Paperboy :)

  7. Amy says:

I cannot wait for Moonrise Kingdom! I’m a huge Wes Anderson fan, saw the trailer for it at the cinema today for the first time which caused a huge amount of excitement (for me, at least).
