First Official Look at Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Django Unchained’

The first official pictures from Quentin Tarantino‘s Django Unchained have been released and they look stunning! Take a look at Django (Jamie Foxx) and Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz) walking down Main Street as well as Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio) being up to no good below.

The film centers on Django, a freed slave-turned-bounty hunter who must return to his plantation to rescue his slave wife Broomhilda (Washington) from its evil owner, played by Leonardo DiCaprio. Along the way, he teams up with bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz).

Jamie Foxx told EW that the movie is sure to be controversial and also elaborates on the plot: “Candie is a business man who owns a plantation called Candie Land, and that’s where my wife ends up being… we have to get in good with Candie, by me playing a valet for Christoph’s character.”

Foxx also states that despite QT’s flmaboyant nature, the director realizes there is a serious side to the underlying themes of the movie: “There’s a beautiful way [Tarantino] found for the characters to talk to each other. It’s mindblowing. You’ve never heard it this way. You’ve seen movies deal with slavery — or westerns that never dealt with slavery – do it the safe way. This way is like … wow.”

Check out the pictures below and let us know what you think! Django Unchained opens December 25th.

Set in the South two years before the Civil War, “Django Unchained” stars Academy Award®-winner Jamie Foxx as Django, a slave whose brutal history with his former owners lands him face-to-face with German-born bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz (Academy Award®-winner Christoph Waltz). Schultz is on the trail of the murderous Brittle brothers, and only Django can lead him to his bounty. The unorthodox Schultz acquires Django with a promise to free him upon the capture of the Brittles – dead or alive.

Success leads Schultz to free Django, though the two men choose not to go their separate ways. Instead, Schultz seeks out the South’s most wanted criminals with Django by his side. Honing vital hunting skills, Django remains focused on one goal: finding and rescuing Broomhilda (Kerry Washington), the wife he lost to the slave trade long ago.

Django and Schultz’s search ultimately leads them to Calvin Candie (Academy Award®-nominee Leonardo DiCaprio), the proprietor of “Candyland,” an infamous plantation where slaves are groomed by trainer Ace Woody (Kurt Russell) to battle each other for sport. Exploring the compound under false pretenses, Django and Schultz arouse the suspicion of Stephen (Academy Award®-nominee Samuel L. Jackson), Candie’s trusted house slave. Their moves are marked, and a treacherous organization closes in on them. If Django and Schultz are to escape with Broomhilda, they must choose between independence and solidarity, between sacrifice and survival…

Written and directed by Academy Award®-winner Quentin Tarantino, DJANGO UNCHAINED is produced by Stacey Sher, Pilar Savone and Reginald Hudlin. The executive producers are Harvey and Bob Weinstein, Michael Shamberg, Shannon McIntosh, and James Skotchdopole. DJANGO UNCHAINED will be released in the U.S. on December 25, 2012, and internationally by Sony Pictures Releasing International.

This is looking incredible. Looking forward to see what Foxx brings to the part and why he was chosen over so many others for the role. And only Leo can make an evil plantation master look that dashingly threatening.

Can’t wait. Leo delivering Tarantino dialogue and being a villain. This movie can’t get made quick enough. Still, shame about JGL’s departure though. Great pics, thanks for sharing!

Wow somehow Foxx actually look like a badass gunslinger, I was worried he won’t look the part. Still would’ve love to see Anthony Mackey as Django but in QT I trust.

Leo will definitely surprise people with this role, I sure hope he’s more menacing than in the written script. I can’t wait to see this movie.

Hmm, is Leo going to be going all Driver from Drive with that hammer?

Looks brilliant. Broomhilda? That’s an actual name? I’m so ignorant!

Love these. Waltz and Foxx look great together, and I love the implications of Leo’s image– though I also think he looks like he’s handling a hammer for the first time. “What’s this newfangled gadget you’ve handed me here? A hammer, eh? How does it work? Which end am I supposed to hold?”
