What Fictional World Do You Want To Live In?
One of the endearing beauty of watching movies is being able to be immersed in a fictional world so vivid and compelling that it almost feels like you are there. Sometimes, you even wish you were there because after all, that’s the reason we look to escape with movies, television shows, novels or video games. Hence, the question of the week is: What fictional world do you wish to live in?
For me, the first one that comes to mind is the world of I Am Legend. Although I certainly wouldn’t want to be the last man left on Earth with flocks of zombies (or vampires technically) waiting to kill me, I have always fantasized about how I would survive in such a dire situation. It would also be quite something to explore a world devoid of any people and maybe even have to fend for yourself for a (little) while.
Another fictional world that I actually think would be pretty cool to live in would be Springfield from The Simpsons. Blessed with a perennially blue sky, various ecological systems such as a beach, a mountain, a volcano, a glacier, a desert, and countless forests, Springfield has to be the most exciting middle-sized town ever! Feel thirsty, go to Moe’s for a Duff beer. Homer will always provide some free entertainment. Want to see some basketball? The Springfield Excitement are playing tonight! I’m sure I can think of more but I will reserve those for the comments.
It’s your turn! What fictional world did you wish to live in or visit? Feel free to answer with any fictional world, may it be from movies, television, video games, comics or literature.
The question of the week is an opportunity for you to open up and reveal more about yourself and your movie taste. Have a question you would like us and the readers to answer? E-mail me at castor@anomalousmaterial.com

Easy: Middle Earth (post Sauron or pre Smaug preferably)
Yeah, Middle Earth is my answer as well and it’s not even close. I can’t wait to visit there (New Zealand) in the summer. Actually choosing which part of Middle Earth would be fairly difficult, though.
Possibly the White City, with the White Tower of Ecthelion, glimmering like a spike of pearl and silver, its banners caught high in the morning breeze?
Or perharps horsies are your fancy and decide to live at Edoras or along the Westfold?
Or live amongst the trees in Rivendell or Lothlorien?
Maybe even the peaceful Shire, with a suprlus of ale and Longbottom leaf to go around.
I think a re-stablished Arnor in the North would trump all of these.
Gosh I’m such a nerd….
Well, any true nerd visiting Middle Earth would obviously take about thirteen months and fully re-enact the entire journey. Start out in the Shire end in Gondor (maybe you skim over the whole Moria section depending on what Age you’re visiting in).
Wow Red, I’m jealous! That’s the one place I’ve always dreamed to visit even before my LOTR fascination.
Castor, Middle Earth would be one of my answers, too, preferably with Aragorn as my loyal companion
Wow that’s a vivid description, makes me almost wanna read the books!
Joel was that a mistype? Did you actually mean re-read the books?
Post Sauron or Pre Smaug? Where’s the fun in that dude? I would live in Middle Earth on the condition that I would go on a sweet adventure like Bilbo did.
I’ve got the Matrix as my number one pick, but Middle Earth would have to be my number two… followed by Marvel Comics’ New York City – Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, The Avengers, Doctor Strange… and the X-Men in the suburbs.
I’ll meet you in the matrix and Middle earth’s world Steve
The matrix is the first that comes into my mind when reading this post. Middle earth comes second, i want to live amongst those carefree hobbits.
The third world that comes into my mind is One Piece’s world. I am not sure many people here know about that world. It’s from my favorite all time Manga
I agree with NY in Marvel Universe!!!
I’ll stick my hand up and say that I’d live in any Monty Python universe – crazy stuff man, crazy stuff.
Yeah, stick me down for my Middle Earth residency as well.
Ahaah that would be a heck of a funny world to live in
I may be lame, but wouldn’t mind entering Harry Potter, and getting to visit Hogsmeade – Oh wait, I kind of can, can’t I?
I kind of always wanted to be a mutant in X-Men – without the discrimination, of course xD.
And I always wanted to be on Wishbone, because I always wanted a dog that could tell stories hahaha, which doesn’t happen in the show I guess xD – I’ll take Mary Poppins!
same here. i would love to study in Hogwarts. in a death eater-less wizard world, though.
Hm, interesting topic. Only, the problem is – in which form would I get there? I’m afraid, if they’d put me in almost any fictional world like I am now, I (and pretty much every nowadays human) would probably get torn to shreds by some forest beast or stabbed in the dark by some murderous cutthroat.
Well, that aside…
If I were to choose solely on the natural beauty of the environment I’d pick, without a doubt JC’s Pandora, and, of course the already mentioned Middle Earth, probably Rivendell in the latter. I’d also like to visit the grim hills that make Conan’s native land – Cimmeria. It’d also be cool to visit some of the worlds seen in Japanese RPG’s, though I can’t really pick a specific one.
Finally, as any man, I’d like to live at least for a few days in a porno film environment, or even the more extreme world of Japanese hentai animations where literally anything is possible, regardless of who (or even what) you are. Unless you’re a woman, in that case what usually happens is, well, rape…
“in which form would I get there?” Ahah, I was thinking the same thing too, VS. After seeing Avatar again it kind of makes me want to live in Pandora, but I don’t know if I want to have a tail like the Na’vi
As a human it’s be impossible to live there comfortably though.
I mean ‘it’d’ be… heh, should’ve read it through before hitting the button.
I’d be a toy in Toy Story as you’d never grow old. MWAHAHAHAHA!!!
ahhh, good one there. xD
Oh, wait, I have another one.
Fantasia. I’d love to meet the Childlike Empress, Rockbiter, and those two zany elf dudes experimenting on the Oracle (they were both dudes, right? Right? Anybody?). Minus the Gmorck of course. Fantasia is a pretty sweet place.
Alternatively, I’d like never to be stuck in that place in The Dark Crystal, nor in the world of the Labyrinth. Waaaay too creepy!
I Love to Live in Pandora as in Avatar, but without Tail:) My Second choice is ‘Situation like 2012′ movie. Wanna like to be a Hero in that particular situation to keep on try to escape. Very Interesting and Horrible situation. Great to see others choice. Cheers.
Wow. What a great question!
Going with the Star Wars Universe. Like there’s anyone on the planet who doesn’t secretly want to be a Jedi?
Yea I have to admit I went and saw all those Star Wars prequel just to see the world of Star Wars updated with modern CGI. It’s certainly one of the great appeal of the franchise.
I’ve made a post of my top 10 choices about a month ago, which you can find it here:
http://myfilmviews.wordpress.com/2010/12/02/on-which-movie-locations-would-you-like-to-live-for-a-week-my-top-10/
I don’t think I would like to live in one of the worlds for the rest of my life though…
The world of Jonathan Lethem’s Amnesia Moon. To get an entirely different apocalypse, just drive to the next town.
I’m surprised no one has said “The Grid” yet. (Tron)!
I love this topic Castor. I’m not sure though. i wouldn’t mind living at Monster’s Inc. But I am a big fan of the video game Fable. Living in that world would be fun. The land of NeverEnding Story would be interesting to see, but not to live…too much….Nothing and the Darkness…and just…weird. Willow and Labyrinth always bothered me…so NO to their world. The last choice I’d like would be Neverland! Peter Pan!! A classic!
Ahah well I’m surprised no one said the world of Pokemon or Zelda
Can I change my answer to Pokemon? Or Digimon? Or Spongebob?
Jesus, didn’t even think of video games. Hyrule is pretty choice, but I think it’s only that awesome if you’re Link.
Not like I couldn’t do the same shit he does anyway.
Wow…no one’s said Star Trek yet? I’m not going to say it either, I’m just surprised. I’m equally surprised that no one said Dr. Who.
I’ll take the magic-real fantasy world beyond Wall in Gaiman’s Stardust thenkyooverymuch. Or Hellboy, but only if I get to work for the BPRD.
Yeah, Star Trek! Forgot about that. Though, it depends on which series – in the days of Captain Kirk, every time they went with an away team on a planet, a random ensign would end up that. Now, I wouldn’t wanna that random ensign that is on the away party with Kirk, Spock, Scotty and McCoy, because then your fate is sealed.
However, in the latter series where the bodycount goes down – yeah, why not? Although, I’m not sure which one I’d choose. Probably “Enterprise”, so I could meet Captain Archer (and, I admit, get a good look at T’Pol and Hoshi Sato). He was the biggest badass of all the Captains.
* end up dead, is what I meant to say.
harry potter world! or the world of True Blood.
I’m with PFR. I want to play in Andy’s room with Woody and Buzz! I know the hubby has always wanted to go to Hogwarts!
I’m going to alleviate Movie Guy Steve’s surprise a little. Give me a TARDIS and I’ll be able to visit all the worlds. Simples.
Booyah!
Strange that no one has mentioned the island on Lost. =)
I’m surprised by the amount of people who pick The Matrix, thereby volunteering to become human batteries in tubs of icky gunk. Ugh.
Hey to quote a not-so-great man: “Ignorance is bliss!”
I’ll tell you, life is better in a TARDIS.
I want to comeback as someone special, maybe a politician or an athlete… muahahah
Awww, Joel. You’re already someone special.
Love it! “I don’t even see the code. I just see blonde, brunette, redhead…”
You guys just want to be able to learn cool shit without doing any work, right?
Uh, yes. And I believe there’s the matter of the woman in the red dress…
Pah! Have you seen how many girls you can pick up in a TARDIS?
Well if you want a hot woman in a red dress then you have to go to the animated world again. Who’s hotter than Jessica Rabbit?
Harry Potter or PokeMon… hands down. Harry Potter I could learn magic and be surrounded by awesome things. But PokeMon? I’d travel the world as a young, adolescent boy–no parents or anything to control me–and get into fights using super-powered animals that I carry around my waist. That’s freakin’ awesome.
Castor: I am legend?? Wow…
Dude, I have to prepare for 2012!
This reminds of the old Avatar blues:

Hogwarts. Especially during the winter season. I can imagine myself in a comfy poster bed while hearing the soft patter of rain outside.
And head to the Great Hall for a Christmas feast!
That’s part of what attracted me to cinema when I was younger, it was a gateway to another world, where anything was possible. As I’ve gotten older I respond more to films that remind me of the great and the good in the world on this side of the screen.
I always answer Gilder to this question. Or is it Florin?
Definitely Wonderland in the reign of White Queen
Right now; the Disney universe, hands down! Preferably the ‘Goof Troop’(one of my favorite Disney franchises) world.
Man, that would be awesome! Just hanging around in a joyful world with cartoon physics and where a spontaneous musical number takes place like every 10 minutes.
I always wonder what the world will look like in the future, so for me I’d love to live in the futuristic city of San Angeles in Demolition Man. Minus the dictator Dr. Cocteau and the psycho Simon Phoenix of course. I want to eat stake and salt as much as I want. But would love to live in a clean air and beautiful landscape.
I’d choose Doctor Who’s universe so we could see it all, and have some pretty sweet adventures in the process.
When I was a kid, I wanted to be in The Goonies (1985), who didn’t? (:
SNAP with Chris above! I spent most of my early years living The Goonies in my imagination. I was constantly on the run from baddies in my head. Then I saw T2 and every time I got on a bike I was in the drainage canal being chased by the T100 in that truck. But I guess they’re not really fictional worlds so I’ll go with the future Hill Valley in Back to the Future 2 or the alternate 1985 Hill Valley for a bit of decadence.
When I was a kid (can’t remember what age) I wanted to be in the world of the Lost Boys because for a while there I was osessed with the idea of being a vampire. The lifestyle at least. I even used to sleep with my arms across my chest!
I think it would be cool to get lost in a Studio Ghibli movie, like Spirited Away or Ponyo. It’d also be pretty cool to go to space with the crew of the Nostromo from Alien and explore the depths of the ocean in The Abyss.
The idea from She’s the Man (or more so from Shakespeare’s “As You Like It”) – posing as a boy in a guy’s room at school could be pretty eye-opening and interesting, haha.
Middle Earth and Hogwarts are two big ones that have been mentioned countless times, but would of course be awesome.
The idea from Midnight in Paris – getting to chill with literary heroes from 1920s Paris.
Having the close friend group and bar hangout in How I Met Your Mother would be pretty awesome too.
Either the Hogwarts world or Middle Earth
