Everything Changes, But Not Quite

Oh, the sweet-scented summer of 1992. Kriss Kross was actually a thing. The first Dream Team took to the hardwood in Barcelona. Lynx had just been made available as a text based web browser (not that I had any idea what the hell that meant) to the public. Jesse Jackson took the podium at the Democratic National Convention and spoke of how far his people had come and, yet, how far they still had to go. And the movies? The movies had all sorts of new and exciting things to offer!

There was a new Batman movie (Batman Returns) featuring Catwoman. There was a new Alien movie (Alien 3). There was a third film in a black-white Buddy Cop movie franchise (Lethal Weapon 3).There was a franchise film featuring a new actor in the lead role (Patriot Games). Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren starred together in Universal Soldier.

It is now 20 years later, the summer of 2012 is upon us. Kriss Kross is most definitely no longer a thing. The 6th version of The Dream Team – which might wind up featuring an Anthony Davis who wasn’t even born in 1992 – will take to the hardwood in London. As I type this millions of people worldwide are removing phones from their pockets to browse the web anywhere they damn please. A black President will take the podium at the Democratic National Convention to speak. And the movies? The movies have all sorts of new and exciting things to offer!

There is a new Batman movie (The Dark Knight Rises) featuring Catwoman. There is a new Alien movie (Prometheus). There is a third film in a black-white Buddy Cop movie franchise (Men In Black III). There is a franchise film featuring a new actor in the lead role (The Amazing Spider Man). Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren star together in The Expendables 2.

Hey. Wait a minute.

Man I feel old, I still remember the summer of 1992 and those films you mentioned. It’s funny how Hollywood keeps repeating itself. Don’t forget too that The Bourne and Spiderman films keep coming out the same summer.

  4. Wow man… I totally feel old.

And this Nick Prigge guy, what a rock star!

  6. Well spotted. Got a laugh out of me.

Nice bit of homework you did there Nick and just how uncanny the similarities oddly echo the same two decades later. Though the most astute thing you mentioned is that I think we’re all glad “Kriss Kross is most definitely no longer a thing”:) Still, in the Summer of 92 they made me Jump Jump.

When I originally typed this up I actually had said that Kriss Kross and Mr. Big were most definitely no longer things. But then I realized I should probably verify that before publishing and, lo and behold, Mr. Big reunited a few years ago.

So yeah, Mr. Big IS still a thing. That frightens me.

Haha….I have to admit I was wondering where this was leading Nick. But excellent stuff. This put a smile on my face.

…what have I been saying about Hollywood’s recycled ideas machine! ;)

Great observation. Though Pfeiffer’s Catwoman will always be the greatest.

    Hi, Nick and company:

    Hilarious dissertation! Very Tom Lehrer.

All that is needed is some audio/visual accompaniment.

Was anyone else flashing back to the ‘Everything Old is New Again’ dance scene from ‘All That Jazz’?

For the franchise film with a new lead actor, I thought you were going to be mentioning Jeremy Renner in the new Bourne movie. Interesting coincidences.
