Must Watch: First Trailer for ‘The Great Gatsby’

Warner Bros. has debuted the first trailer for Baz Luhrmann‘s adaptation of The Great Gatsby and it looks stylishly over-the-top in a way only Luhrmann can accomplish.

As with most trailers these days, the pathetic choice of contemporary music (Jay-Z and Kanye West) for the trailer leaves to be desired but it will all be forgiven if the Moulin Rouge! director can infuse some life back into the classic tale. Leonardo DiCaprio looks like he will own the screen while co-stars Carey Mulligan and Joel Edgerton look strong as well.

So will it be all style and no substance? Time will tell. Watch the trailer below or click over to Apple to watch in HD. The Great Gatsby opens in 3D on December 25th.

The Great Gatsby follows Fitzgerald-like, would-be writer Nick Carraway as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz and bootleg kings. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby, and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy, and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan. It is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super rich, their illusions, loves and deceits. As Nick bears witness, within and without the world he inhabits, he pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and high-octane tragedy, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles.

I just finished reading this book, coincidentally, and WOW that trailer reminds me of why I love Baz Luhrman! His work’s not for everyone, but as good as the book was, I really love just how much lusher and immediate Luhrman makes it all seem.

Wasn’t that excited about this one until now. And the contemporary music bothered me a little, but then again, this is from the guy who brought us turn of the century Parisians singing Elton John songs to each other. I should have expected it. :)

    • Castor says:

Glad you are excited for this Julio. My illiterate self has yet to read the book but I will see if I can pick up a copy one of those days…

  2. I’m hoping this will get me some sweet FD points :)

  3. I could do without the Kanye/Jay-Z thing but that U2 cover is good. It’s definitely a Baz Luhrmann film but I like this kind of lavishness. Plus, Carey Mulligan looks gorgeous.

  4. Shala says:

Loving this! I’m actually in the middle of the book now so this gets me extra excited. Yes, Carey is gorgeous and Leo DiCaprio is a perfect Gatsby. I actually like the contemporary music (sorry!). It breathes new life in it for me.

    • Castor says:

Hi Shala! Yea, nothing wrong with infusing some new life, especially in a classic tale that has bored millions of kids in AP English class over the years ;) But I’m just not a fan of these particular songs, one of them was used in the Safe House trailers lol

Amitabh Bachchan! Yaay for Bollywood. Though I’m still strictly against the 3D, it looks great. Moulin Rouge! is my most favourite film of all time, so I am definitely a fan of Luhrmann’s visual style. Also Leo is back to looking pretty and Mulligan too looks great. I love the book, and yes I am finally excited.

  6. Stevee says:

I finished reading this book last weekend and it is officially my favourite book ever. I love Baz Luhrmann’s work, so hopefully this will be amazing. Not sure about the 3D, though.

    • Castor says:

Yea, the 3D certainly has me scratching my head but after seeing the lush visual style, I could see how Luhrmann could go even more over-the-top with the 3D

  7. Scott Lawlor says:

There is no denying that the styling is stunning. I await for more clips to make a final judgement

  8. Rodney says:

While I detect a fair amount of similarity thematically to Moulin Rouge (the opening few minutes of the trailer, with the party, dancing and variety of characters appearing to mirror Baz’s earlier film, for example) I am so ready to watch this film. Mulligan looks radiant, the visual style of the movie looks stunning, and no doubt DiCaprio will produce yet another wonderful performance.

    Yep, can’t wait!!!

  9. For those who haven’t done it, please read the book! By the way, Luhrmann still needs to impress me and I’m afraid to see what he will do with the material here.

  10. sati says:

Carey and Leo look great, but Tobey McGuire? He pretty much makes most of his scenes in films laughable.

I just finished my reaction post to this trailer. Borrowing from Moulin Rouge’s Duke’s words… ‘Generally, I like it’ :D

  12. Fogs says:

    Huh.

    I dont know.

Maybe its just the fact I wasnt expecting so much “Style”, and the anachronistic music…

It’s gotta settle with me, I guess.

  13. Dan says:

I can’t take much from that trailer but it looks like a stunner from a stylistic perspective. Style over substance maybe but this cast but swing the numbers if they are on form.
