Oscar-winning actress Natalie Portman hasn’t exactly rushed back to work after taking Golden Statue home for her excellent performance in Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan. She took a year off for the birth of her child and turned down numerous high profile roles including ones in the Wachowski’s Jupiter Ascending and Ridley Scott’s The Counselor. But Terrence Malick recently came calling and it seems the actress couldn’t pass up the opportunity as she is to appear in the director’s two films set to shoot later this year.
THR now has wind that she has signed on to star and produce the western Jane Got a Gun. We Need to Talk About Kevin director Lynne Ramsay will direct, from a 2011 Black List script by Brian Duffield. The Old West story revolves around a woman whose outlaw husband returns home badly wounded after his gang turns on him. She has to reach out to an ex-lover to defend her farm from the baddies trying to finish the job.
Ramsay’s and Portman’s involvement is certainly exciting, so much so that it has started a bidding war at the Cannes Film Festival. Portman will likely too busy this year so production likely won’t begin until sometime next year. At any rate, this sounds like something worth keeping an eye on.
