Q&A: What Kind Of Movie Viewer Are You?

In Beginners there is a moment when Ewan McGregor and Melanie Laurent are jettisoned from the skating rink where they have gone with their friends because dogs are not allowed on the premises and McGregor, of course, has Arthur, his late father’s Jack Russell terrier, along for the ride.

At this point McGregor and Laurent flee via their roller skates, out of the building and down the street and through her hotel lobby. As this is happening, what do you think. Do you think……

A.) Uh, they have now lost their shoes because they turned their shoes in as collateral and chose to leave via their roller-skates?

B.) Way to stick to it to the man?

C.) This is the first time Melanie Laurent’s character has ever skated. How could she possibly skate all the way from the rink to the hotel? It’s ridiculous. This is absurd?

D.) God-dammit, that’s romantic?

My answer is D. But then you knew that already.

WHAT IS YOUR ANSWER? SOUND OFF BELOW!

Ha! I just saw this on the weekend and my reaction was A! I was honestly wondering whether they rented the skates and where their shoes were!

  2. Castor says:

My answer is E. Where do I find this Melanie Laurent for myself? :D

  3. Shala says:

I love this movie… my answer is D. Does that make me a true romantic?

    E. What happened to the dog?

    • Nick Prigge says:

The dog remained at the bowling alley with their friends and their friends were planning on taking it over to the hotel but the dog communicated to them that he would just walk on back himself and did. It was a deleted scene. You can find it on the DVD. Just don’t check the DVD to see if it’s there.

  5. Uh… I have no answer for this. I have never seen this film yet so I can’t really say.

  6. martin says:

    I’m going with a combo of A and C

  7. ruth says:

None of the above. I haven’t seen this movie but just from your description I’m thinking, man I wish I knew how to roller skate… and I wish I had someone like Ewan McGregor to teach me ;) Now what does that make me?

  8. Dave Enkosky says:

I’m gonna go with A because that’s the sort of thing I always obsess over in movies.

  9. Dan says:

It is a combo of A and D for me. Probably a fleeting A followed by the warm realisation it is actually D.

  10. E. I can think of dozens of better ways to have handled that situation. These people are impulsive, which may appear romantic in the short run, but over time will put significant strain on their lives/relationship. Also they are now probably kicked out of that hotel, too, as that kind of establishment frowns upon indoor rollerskating. Which is doubly unfortunate, since now she’ll have to carry all her luggage around town on rollerskates, since she no longer has shoes.

  11. Andrew K. says:

As you probably already know, my answer is D, in bold capital letters. That and the invisible E – where are MY moments like this Mike Mills, way to put in this completely unrealistic scene in your otherwise excellently realistic movie and now have me think that we live in a world where lovely couples roller skate through corridors in hotels. Sigh.
