Tom Cruise to Star in MGM’s Remake of ‘The Magnificent Seven’
Yes, MGM is developing a remake of the 1960 Western classic The Magnificent Seven as we speak and Variety reports that Tom Cruise is set to star. As you probably already know, the original transplanted Akira Kurosawa’s masterpiece Seven Samurai into the wild west as oppressed Mexican peasants hire a ragtag group of men to defend their village from rampaging bandits. The star-studded cast included the likes of Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, and James Coburn.
Beyond our intense reticence of seeing a classic getting the remake treatment, it certainly will be interesting to see whether the studio will go with a bunch of A-listers to fill the rest of the Magnificent Seven or whether Cruise will be the bona-fide star of the movie. At any rate, don’t expect to see this movie in the immediate future as Cruise is having an extremely busy year. He just wrapped the Jack Reacher adaptation One Shot and is currently working on Joseph Kosinski’s sci-fi pic Oblivion. He will then star in Doug Liman’s All You Need Is Kill while he contemplates numerous projects that include El Presidente alongside Robert Downey Jr., Top Gun 2 and a reboot of Van Helsing.
Who would be your ideal Magnificent Seven? Let us know in the comments!

NOOOOOOOOO I hope the ghost of Steve McQueen puts an end to these shenanigans. This may be the worst idea I have ever heard of. Tom Cruise can not fill McQueen’s shoes. I mean literally as McQueen did not wear lifts.
You know you want it. Tom Cruise, Jack Black, Will Ferrell, Ryan Reynolds, Michael Cera, Channing Tatum and Chris Rock. That’s our modern day lineup!
We’re making remakes of remakes people. If they were perhaps transporting the basic idea of 7 hired men into a different setting(like sci-fi) i could perhaps get behind this, but its a straight remake…of a remake here. There is something wrong with that
It’s human evolution yo. A century from now, we will only make remakes of remakes of remakes. The limit of human imagination will have been reached!
Nowadays I’m not surprised by anything! Cruise as a cowboy… Another flick I’ll have to avoid.
I’m with 3guys1movie on this. Worst. Idea. Ever. Plus, Hollywood has basically forgotten how to make a good western, let alone a remake of a great one. If you thought 2007′s ’3:10 to Yuma’ remake was good, this idea of Tom Cruise stepping in and re-doing a classic then must sound great. Sheesh!
Yea, it’s really sad how the western has died over the years.
I’m hoping this winds up in permanent limbo with the long-rumored Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid remake.
Shhh… Don’t mention it or they might remember to remake it!
Had no idea they were remaking this until this news broke. Not excited about it…as is the case with most classic remakes, but I, too, am curious if they will add more A-listers to the cast or not.
Ok what’s your magnificent seven T?
I’m writing a project that is similar but it’s more nihilistic with lots of graphic sex and violence.
lol
yeah…i’m not loving the remake thing, but i am a HIGE tom cruise fan, so i will support this.
A remake of a remake. I have no words…
Ok, you obviously love the idea…
In terms of good western remakes we have seen a couple of entertaining ones in the past few years but I’m still put off by the idea of yet another unoriginal film coming out of Hollywood.
@Eric: remakes of remakes is all that Hollywood has left it seems… The Thing anyone…
Not a smart idea. When Michael Keaton’s character (the original) clones himself to keep up with his work in the movie Multiplicity, it’s understandable. However when a copy of a copy is made, the resulting character is dumb as is this remake of a remake idea.
