Watch: First Teaser Clip from Paul Thomas Anderson’s ‘The Master’
The first clip from Paul Thomas Anderson‘s The Master has surfaced on the film’s official website and Joaquin Phoenix looks as deranged as ever. Philip Seymour Hoffman stars as a World War II veteran who becomes the charismatic leader of his own religion while Phoenix plays a drifter who becomes his right-hand man.
The film marks the return of Phoenix to acting after his so-called “retirement”. There is no doubt that he has always been an excellent actor and he gives off an awesomely creepy vibe in this teaser clip. Also, you will notice that the percussion-heavy score reminds of what we heard in PTA’s previous movie, There Will Be Blood.
The Master hits theaters on October 12th. Watch the clip below and let us know what you think!

All of the awards! Okay it’s too early to say that, but god this looks great. And it’s how a teaser should be- it should tease but not give away things.
Also Phoenix looks so different in a way- for a moment during his close-up, I really wasn’t sure if it was him.
And no sight of Hoffman yet, who should be the highlight of the show!
Jonny Greenwood’s score. That’s all that’s needed to be said to get me excited to see this film.
A teaser hasn’t hasn’t gotten me this excited about a new release since…well, since There Will Be Blood.
Amazing. Spellbinding. That’s just a vignette of footage from what’s sure to be a two hour film, and I found it more gripping than some of the full-length films I’ve seen this year. Very interested in seeing the whole thing, especially if it actually is a riff on the birth of scientology as rumors indicate.
PTA is my man. If I could pick one contemporary director I wish he could direct a film per year it would be him. Looking forward to it very much!
Whoah, I’ll watch this just to see Phoenix returning to acting! “…charismatic leader of his own religion” so like scientology then??
