Hugh Laurie in Talks to Play Baddie in ‘Robocop’

We have been waiting for many years to see Hugh Laurie return to the big screen and it looks like it may be coming to reality soon. Variety reports that the House, M.D. star is in negotiations to join Jose Padilha’s remake of Robocop as the ruthlessly evil CEO of Omni Corp, the corporation behind the creation of Robocop.

The character looks like a perfect fit for Laurie, who has elevated his role as the misanthropic Dr. House to iconic levels. While this likely won’t stretch Laurie’s acting chops much, here is hoping he will attract more movie roles in the near future.

This is the latest interesting development in the casting of the film, which is set to star Joel Kinnaman (The Killing) in the title role and Gary Oldman as the scientist responsible for creating Robocop. Last weekend, we also reported Samuel L. Jackson and Abbie Cornish were in talks to join the film as a media mogul and Kinnaman’s wife respectively.

Production is set to begin this September in Toronto for an August 9, 2013 release date.

Really interesting choice. I love it. Although I still cannot get the old sketch show he did with Stephen Fry out of my head….

  2. Jaina says:

Please make this happen. While I may have zoned out of House in the last couple of seasons, Hugh Laurie was fantastic in it. Be great to see more of him on the big screen.

  3. Ben Cooper says:

Living in England, and having grown up watching ‘A bit of Fry and Laurie’ and ‘Blackadder’ it is still bizarre to me to see Hugh in serious parts… that’s not to say I’m not glad. I think he’s a great actor, yet another great British export to Hollywood!

I hope this will go better than his last work as a vilain in some movie about police officers I can’t even remember the title of.

  5. Dan says:

…I can just about picture it but I can’t see Ronny Cox being beaten for sheer bad-ass-ness!

  6. ruth says:

Is he gonna beat the s*** out of Robocop with that guitar or killing him softly playing it?

  7. Pete says:

Hating the fact that I can never stay angry about remakes of classics. The casting of this and the choice of director is just so exciting, I’m finding myself increasingly unable to scowl at the decision to remake Robocop!

    Me likely Hugh Laurie.
